I think Hanson was the main recruiter on Sam, but I would imagine he is looking Power 5. Yes, I know USD isn't on the table for Sam. I was just mentioning it for perspective. Remember when we had staff that brought in kids like Greisel? It can happen again. For what its worth, Kramer looks an awful lot like Griesel...

From Coach Pete's presser:
"In recruiting I definitely think we need to get back to the Midwest. Recruit High School kids really really hard, and develop those relationships with those coaches, and AAU coaches. That'll be a huge focus for us moving forward....
...we're definitely gonna recruit Junior College kids. It made me who I am today as a coach. So I really believe in that, but it's gotta be the right fit, too.
And then, obviously, the transfer portal has kinda changed college athletics. We'll look through that as well. And then Internationally, if its the right fit we'll look there."
Sounds like a good prioritized recruiting plan:
1. Midwest HS kids 2. Juco kids if the right fit (said he wants kids that want to graduate here) 3. Transfer players if the right fit 4. International players if the right fit
My guess is that with the compressed recruiting season he might lean a little heavier on Juco and portal kids just this first year, then with the contacts he already has we will see a quick transition to focusing on HS kids. I don't personally have a problem with International players, as they are 4-year guys anyway. But I think they will be lower on the priority scale now.

Just can't make Int'l players the basis of the program. I see the emphasis on building the recruiting of the program from the inside out, which I think is a good thing. Build the base with HS recruits from the Midwest. Fill in where needed from juco, transfer, int'l.

Haven't seen anything but heard that Zizic entered the portal. I really hope the new staff can talk him into staying as I think he has a lot of potential and was woefully underutilized this season. Just can't teach that size and strength.

I think this board puts too much emphasis on recruiting local kids. There is some merit to building a team around 4 year guys, but who cares where they are from? If you have a local guy that wants to be here, great. But I'd rather spend more recruiting resources in areas with a ton of talent to choose from. Create a pipeline in FL, CA, TX, etc. Find the kids that the P5 is over looking.

Some of our best players on both the men's and women's teams in the Division 1 era have been International/ Juco/ Transfer student-athletes. Not all of them, but plenty. Its good to have that diversity, I think Good to have a little of everything. There are benefits of all of those categories. Midwest HS kids are sometimes more likely to stick around and develop for 4 years, but if they are really good enough some end up transferring anyway, just like anyone else. For many International students, and Juco kids, they have a better appreciation for the opportunity they have in this NCAA sports model. Some of them are mercenaries that end up transferring multiple times, though. Hard to generalize too much. I would say that Lee seemed to take a long time to get into recruiting HS kids, though. Pandemic or not, you have got to show something on the HS recruiting front after 4 years. Maybe he had a hard time making the relationships you need with AAU and HS coaches?

You’re recruiting to a town of 10,000 in South Dakota. Everything’s gotta be on the table recruiting-wise but you have to plant a flag in your own yard every now and again.

Might have to look into that.

I certainly don’t mind utilizing Juco, international and transfers. But the risk you run by building a team solely on them is,IMO, much higher. If you want sustained success you have to have core players who develop “traditionally” (wether HS or international)over 4-5 years in the program and then you have to have the Juco, transfer pieces to help fill in the cracks and put it all together. It’s about finding a healthy balance, idc if they’re local (although it’d be nice if a few were) just get people in that want to win and help grow the program.

Bob is doing exactly what we are advocating for here, he's pulled in some SD recruits, some regional recruits, national recruits, and some transfers. A nice mix but like Men's League Waterboy state, planted a flag in his own yard as well. I do remember that it has taken a few years and some program success to do this though as we used to not win local recruiting battles.

Kruz is definitely one of the guys I don't want to see go. He advanced so much this year. Was hoping to see how much further he could grow here.
