State of the Program

This past season was a pleasant surprise and the ball bounced in the Yotes favor. I normally get on the message board every couple weeks and laugh at the assumptions. The truth is the program has major issues and the future looks poor. After visiting with a large number of players on the team they predict that the offense will be better in 2022. My offensive prediction 2021 - 5th in the league / 2022 4th in the league. My defensive prediction 2021 - 7th in the league / 2022 8th in the league. (MVFC stats)  

The reasons the future looks poor

1. 2022 schedule (4-7 prediction)
2. Multiple coaching changes (lost the most liked coaches on the staff)
3. Last year of the HC contract
4. The athletic department support staff hates the football staff according to HR

Other interesting issues in the program confirmed by the team and supporters

1. Lost the DFO - New DFO has no clue 
2. The new DFO is the son-in-law of a big donor and is never in the office
3. Defensive Coordinator is hated by the team and all the support staff
4. Multiple big donors want a change at the HC
5. While at a game this year I watched staff members verbally attack the medical staff on the sideline
6. The list is longer but you get the point

These issues must be address for the program to take the next step.

As a former Yote and supporter it hurts me to post this information.

Agreed...I really don't see the point in posting this other than to roil the waters. From what I know and hear a lot of this is BS. Troll alert here?

Since I couldn’t get my NFL thread to go, and am missing football, I’ll bite on this troll comment.

The reasons the future looks poor

1. 2022 schedule (4-7 prediction)
— Who are the losses to?

2. Multiple coaching changes (lost the most liked coaches on the staff)
— The most liked? That’s the Coyote standard? I want my son developed, pushed, and challenged to reach greatness. Not sure “liked” is the criteria of leaders.

— 2 of the 3 improved careers. What typically happens after successful seasons. Aurich had the opportunity to be a Defensive coordinator in a very good FCS conference and Hodge is at his Alma Mater in Iowa (salary increase?).

— No way Ockinga could have been one of the “most liked”. By all accounts, was pushed out of the program. He was demoted from WR coach, didn’t have a position? Believe he is the #1 and only reason Kody Case is in the transfer portal along with the majority of the WR room. (Most portal entries off the football team) Probably a much needed move and kudos to Bob for trying to make the program better. No disrespect intended, but not sure anyone leaves an Asst HC role for (what looks to be) a lack luster NAIA football program. “Liked”….doubtful.

3. Last year of the HC contract
— Not accurate - Bob Nielson’s contract runs until 2024. ‘22,’23,’24

4. The athletic department support staff hates the football staff according to HR
— Weird comment. “Hates” strong feelings from HR. HR is talking about HR issues with a random alum born in 1984. We may have an HR issue!!

Other interesting issues in the program confirmed by the team and supporters

1. Lost the DFO - New DFO has no clue 
—We’re worried about a DFO in June?

2. The new DFO is the son-in-law of a big donor and is never in the office
—Is this part of “not having a clue”? Looking at the Rosenthal bio I would think having a person with Midwest Power 5 experience who is connected to our donors would be a good thing?

3. Defensive Coordinator is hated by the team and all the support staff
—Another weird comment. “Hated”. I’ve heard very different, defense was the obvious strength of our team and looks to have been given a promotion in the off-season to Asst. Head Coach.

4. Multiple big donors want a change at the HC.
—For what reason? Playoffs twice in 4 years. USD football has been maybe 6-7 times in history it I’m not mistaken.(Wikipedia

5. While at a game this year I watched staff members verbally attack the medical staff on the sideline
—What happened? What staff? A sideline altercation at a football game is the downfall of the program? Looks like there are a long list of programs in trouble.

6. The list is longer but you get the point
—Please tell.

These issues must be address for the program to take the next step.

As a former Yote and supporter it hurts me to post this information. 

— If you cared, and have connections to the players, coaches and HR why would you be on a message board positing this information? It “hurts” you to post this information or are you trying to “hurt” the program, people, players, families associated with it?

This feels like another disgruntled dad post. A lot of personal problems with people around the program. The one thing I will take away from this is your take on the 2022 schedule. It's a gauntlet, but I'm excited for it. We won't go undefeated but having a big game every week will be fun for this fan.

Thanks for starting the thread anyway I guess. I'm just happy to be talking football in June.

Looks like he spent the spring interviewing those in the program? That’s a ton of knowledge!

It does spark the question of Bob Nielsen’s contract… usually after a good season you (at the very least) get a one year extension to your contract merely from a recruiting standpoint. So it kind of shows signs that 2024 may be his last?

5 year contract extension starting in the summer of 2019 according to an Argus Leader article. Would end after the 2023 season. We need to get it extended. Probably doesn’t help recruiting or the keeping players in Vermillion if their coach may not be here. Can’t find UND coaches contract but looks like SDSU and NDSU coaches both have deals that extend out past their roster.

At the SLT, a group of us were told by an assistant coach that the FB team had lost 2 recruits because Bob’s contract, and lack of extension, had been used against them in recruiting. I for one cannot believe that an extension wasn’t announced mere days after the season was over, and still nothing. It does make a guy wonder.

Especially since an extension was given after 2018. Not a good year. I was highly critical of that decision, especially given that any success Bob had was because of Streveler at that point.

One would think a coach who has a future in Vermillion would have been offered an extension after this past season.
