I see that Juhnke had the game of her life and we still lost. A quick look at the stats doesn't tell me much other than we let too many balls hit the court, but I'm not an expert. Does anyone have additional insight?

I see that Juhnke had the game of her life and we still lost. A quick look at the stats doesn't tell me much other than we let too many balls hit the court, but I'm not an expert. Does anyone have additional insight? Also not an expert, but when you compare our major stats averages with that match... we let too many balls hit the court.Basically, you got it right. Both USD and NDSU are tops in the conference in hitting % (think of it like shooting efficiency in BB), but even with that, both teams hit well above their own averages, and blocked and dug well below their averages. This was a "defense optional" type of game. USD entered the game as a very good blocking team (2.52 blocks/set #2 in conference) and a below-average digging team (14.64 digs/set #6 in conference) and we ended up with 1.2 blocks per set, and 11.8 digs per set. So that contributed in a big way to NDSU hitting well... too many balls hitting the court. So let's look at individuals in those areas: player | blocks/set | season | Juhnke | 0.60 | 0.82 | Paumen | 0.40 | 1.05 | Harms | 0.40 | 1.13 | Schram | 0.40 | 0.43 | Adams | 0 | 0.62 | Diederich | 0 | 0.22 |
Looks to me like our bigs (middles and Right-side hitter Adams) had a bad game blocking. Juhnke and Schram were the show, both offensively and at least blocking average. Diederich is a great little hitter, and fun to watch... but she is probably somewhat of a liability in the blocking game at 5-8. player | digs/set | season | Farris | 3.6 | 1.83 | Wiedeman | 2.2 | 4.31 | Schram | 1.6 | 2.28 | Juhnke | 1.4 | 2.59 | Wolff | 1.0 | 2.05 | Pauman | 0.6 | 0.21 | Diederich | 0.6 | 0.47 | Petterson | 0.40 | 0.20 | Adams | 0.20 | 0.54 | Harms | 0.20 | 0.15 |
Farris had a lot more digs than normal, but Lolo, Schram and Juhnke had a lot less. Weideman in particular wasn't great this game. Also, Farris had a bad serve-and-receive game, as she led the team in both service errors (4) and receiving errors (4). That's 8 points gifted to the Bison, and in a close Match that's huge. Farris has done very well for a freshman, but inexperience is bound to rear its head now and again. I have to imagine the Bison were singling her out on serves and spikes, too? Bad timing for that, when four of your starters are not doing what their position is specialized to (middle blockers and Right-side not blocking, Libero not digging). Also, Harms and Pauman were hitting well-below their normal. Diederich actually supported Juhnke offensively very well, but we are used to more offensive production from our Middles in our system.
