A (relatively) healthy Hempe could be a real boon to this team. Nice.

Here are some of my amateur scouting observations if you care to read.
Peplowski is out for the year, hurt before the Greece trip. Really tough news for someone who has waited to have a bigger role. Bergstrom was also in sweats, and the initial thing I heard wasn't terribly great either, though that is unofficial. Ugh.
Mazurek was dressed but clearly wasn't going to play. My guess is they are holding her out until conference play, or at least sometime later in non-conference. That leaves 11 players, at least for now.
In general, the game went they way it was expected to go. Kayla subbed liberally, and while that may have just been a first-game thing, I think it will probably continue. They have decent depth and will try to push the ball and wear teams down. When Larkins is in the game, they will absolutely push the ball. Trust me. 🙂
They had some issues keeping ball-handlers in front of them, and the turnover margin was even...too many turnovers trying to feed the post. Both of those issues were where the absence of #34 was particularly noticeable.
As the stats suggest, Larkins and Hempe led the way. Great to see Hempe play like many fans have thought she could play. Hopefully she will have a healthy year.
Hansen is always willing to shoot it, and she looks really confident. If her defense can keep her on the floor, she will be a factor.
Demers was impressive. She is STRONG. She does not look like a high school senior that reclassified. Of course, being young, aggressive, and strong means she will have games where she collects fouls like candy, but she has a nice future here, IMO.
Carson also flashed. Her length is noteworthy, and I think she has a chance to be a pretty good player.
Grange may have been pressing some, but she didn't show much. She did jump center though (not joking). I'm sure she'll produce as she gets comfortable.
They definitely have shooting. Question is if they can get them open without a ton of obvious play-making (outside of Larkins) or a big offensive threat in the post. But they have some depth and versatility. The goals are a bit different this year but it will be very interesting to watch to see how it comes together.

Mines wasn't good last year and lost their best player (by far). Good to see that the Yotes bounced back from what must have been a really bad second quarter. Plenty of room to grow and plenty of opportunity to do so. I'm really looking forward to it.

Northern St beat UND last night 81-74. Kansas City lost to DII Pittsburgh State. They were so embarrassed by it that they simply posted "Completed" in the score column. I wonder if they are going to use that strategy a lot this year...

Northern St beat UND last night 81-74. Kansas City lost to DII Pittsburgh State. They were so embarrassed by it that they simply posted "Completed" in the score column. I wonder if they are going to use that strategy a lot this year... I haven't done a complete look at rosters this season... but my off-the-cuff impression is that most of the conference outside of SDSU and USD have lost too many of their best players to the portal to be much of a threat. We, of course, lost two starters as well, but the difference is that we have the depth to backfill with talent. I hate to underestimate opponents or be cocky, but that is the reality. There are individual players like Hamling at NDSU, or Borowicz at UND who stuck around, but you need more than one player to be competitive. The wildcard in all of this is some teams may just hit the lottery with their portal additions. I think the odds are more likely in favor of another three-showdown-series season, with the last winner going to the dance. As good as the Jacks are likely to be this year, I think our conference SOS will be more of a drag on NET/RPI than usual. Luckily, we don't use the RPI anymore! My prediction is that both USD and SDSU will have a much higher NET rank than RPI rank come tourney-time, because of the "net efficiency" part of the equation. So that's good, at least. Jacks will probably be in at-large (maybe 5 or 6-seed?) territory, and the Yotes on the bubble or just outside of it, or maybe even lower if we have some unexpected losses. Hard to know. Bottom line is that the portal has really messed up the strength of non-elite mid majors. Probably in every conference. We might see that play out in both of our non-con schedules. I don't know how it has affected the high-majors.

The portal is either a blessing or a bugger, depending on which side of it you’re looking. Even high majors were affected. Rutgers only has eight players on their roster, most of them transfers in. They have been actively recruiting Walk-ons. Quite a few of the top 25 teams were completely remade this year, by players coming in and out. What’s to stop a group of girls that maybe played together on the U17 or U18 team, from saying “hey let’s all leave and go to school xxx, and take over that team”. Especially if that team is in a good NIL market.
For the Summit League, North Dakota should be better than they showed the other night. They recruited 2 4-stars this year, one from Wisconsin and one from Michigan. They also have a 6’7 post. However, a friend was at the game the other night, and said they did not play their new 6’4 or 6’7 posts much if at all. And their guards were just jacking up threes willy-nilly.
Kansas City will have to work through chemistry with the new coach and new players to replace those that transferred. Denver, Omaha, WIU, and Oral Roberts also lost some talent to the portal, so who knows what will happen.

The thing I have noticed about the Summit WBB OOC schedule appears that most teams have upgraded their opponents. Whether the dip in talent creates some buyer remorse if the beatings occur, that is to be seen. The new coach with the best opportunity to win is likely ORU. St Thomas could gel as they have a talented guard, Jade Hill, who will be a sophomore. The rest of the teams will be to be determined as players and coaches make progress. The Summit Conference begins in a bit over 6 weeks on December 19.

Definitely going to be an interesting season. Only thing I know for sure is the Jack's are the likely favorite to repeat as WNIT champs.
