Oof that's a tough 2nd Qtr. Inexperience started to show. Inexperience was obvious tonight. Both for players and coach. I can't remember the last time a team scored 19 straight points against our women's team. Tourney game against Oregon maybe? The second quarter stretch tonight was pretty rough. We've been accustomed to having 3 players who were run stoppers. It's different now.

Well realistically it looked like an Elite 8 team with 4 starters back and 6 of 7 top scorers vs a Sweet 16 team with 5 new starters. Coyotes obviously played a great first Q but once Creighton figured out how to defend Grace it was their tough D against the 3 and cuts to the basket on O that made the difference. I really like Demer's toughness as a freshman and as she get more experience at the D1 level she will be very good.
The game was a great albeit no fun learning experience but as the saying goes you learn more from a defeat than a win. The Lady Yotes will continue to improve--the desire, work ethic and talent is there!!
Go Lady Yotes!!!

I'm pretty confident the game will slow down a bit for most of the young players - there are a lot of minutes being played by players will almost no college experience. You could really see them feeling rushed by the intense defense. As noted by others, it is a great learning experience for them to see what aggressive, physical defense looks like, and they can decide if they want to buy in to playing that way. Are both Mazurek and Peplowski out for the season? Having either one of them on the floor would have changed the dynamics last night (help defense, rebounding, and scoring around the baseket).

Pep’s out. Injury this summer/fall. Mazurek will be in games soon, she has been cleared for practice, and dressed yesterday.

It's been so long since Maz played that we might be "misremembering" her defensive ability. She played very rarely before the injury because of her defensive liability. She is a better piece to add to our interior offense and add some length but defense has never been a strong point for her. Hopefully its part of her game that has improved and I'm presently surprised. Pep, on the other hand, is a huge loss for this team. She was going to play a critical role in the interior this season. She worked hard for her minutes and did extremely well at the end of last season. Very heart broken for her.

She is supposed to be a senior in high school right now, rather than showcasing her toughness against a big D1 program like Creighton.

This game will have some good game film for the girls to watch. That is probably the best team we'll face all year.

Outside of someone in the tournament, this is the best team we will play all year. A great learning experience for our young players. I felt like coach purposefully left a few of the young girls on the floor a bit longer than she otherwise might of to get them the kind of experience they are going to need to grow up between now and when it matters, in March. Overall I thought we played tough but the game kind of got away from us. The key stretch outside the 2nd quarter was the missed 3 on our end that would have cut the lead to 3 in the 3rd, then they came down and hit a triple immediately followed by the charging call reversal on Ugofsky which gave them an and 1 and boom the lead was 12 and the Jays never looked back. That goes a bit differently and we have ourselves a much tighter contest.

Nothing too be too discouraged about in this game. Creighton is very deep, skilled, and experienced. Coyotes are young and inexperienced.
The good:
1. Larkin's has elite quickness and can finish at the rim. She's gonna be a special player.
2. Hempe is a skilled offensive player. She needs to be a bit more aggressive in looking for her opportunities but that will come.
3. The Yotes weren't intimidated, despite their lack of experience. Came out aggressive and played well early.
4. Demers is strong. Like, really strong. She will be a nice player as she gets more experience and a comfort level playing at this level.
The bad:
1. They got a little rattled when Creighton got on their run. Started pressing and trying to do to much. Not surprising given their lack of experience. They will learn from this.
2. Grange is struggling with her shot but I think she will come around.
3. Defense is up and down. They play hard but aren't a great team defense yet. This will improve as they play together more.
4. Larkins needs to get better at finding the open player when the defense collapses in her. She started trying to do too much in these situations. This will come with time I believe.
All and all it was a good experience for these young ladies. Not fun to get beat by 20+ but should be a great learning experience. should also give them confidence that they can play at a high level when they play well.

I am reminded a little of another High-scoring Sophomore in a coach's first year. She ended up finishing her career on a lot of All-time Coyote lists, including rebounds steals and assists. Also a DPOY.

Creighton is seriously good, they dismantled Nebraska last night. Saw that. Creighton is legit. No shame in losing to that team.
