People sometimes tend to forget these numbers:
6-5, 6-5, 5-5, 4-7.
USD's record since 2007. Transition to Division I is difficult, absolutely, but when you show no real signs of progress in an up-and-down schedule, people start to wonder.
Fellow message board'ers, what do we make of the results lately?

Hey jman, I decided to move your post to a new thread because i thought it was very interesting.
My thoughts, well I think after the Minnesota game, it seems like USD football did take a step back last year, even though it was a young team. But still, games against Lamar were pretty telling even for a young team. Young or not, those are games a team should win.
To me, it seems this program has hit a wall in progress, but it could be the transition. This is a do-or-die year for me in terms of the team. The young excuse cannot be used this year, so anything that is 6-5 and worse is considered a disappointment to me, along with last year's record.
I need to see a lot and be impressed by this team this year.

I'll agree that this season will tell us a lot about this program. If any of you are thinking "change" is on the horizon, I don't think so. Unless this season is a total disaster Coach Ed will get at least one year to prove himself in the MVFC.
I'll say it now, I think we win the GWFC. We have SUU and UC-D at home and UND and Cal Poly on the road. I think we win our home games, beat UND up in GF (they are regressing IMO) and it comes down to winning at Poly which we've done before.

The link below is worth revisiting. One game is all it was, but it shows how far the Yotes have come. If the team can take as big of a step forward in the next 5 years as they have the last five - it will be really exciting to watch them compete in the MVFC and beyond. www.bigtennetwork.com/generic/schools/minnesota/videoGo Yotes!

A big as the Minnesota win was, what happened to the rest of the season? That's the bigger question, not can 'Can this team win?' We all know they can, but the inconsistencies are what I'm referring to, the lack of real progress, even in a league like the Great West.
Speaking of which, I still like Southern Utah to win the league title. If USD can beat North Dakota in Grand Forks, that'd go a long way.

The Minnesota win was fun and great and all, but why can USD beat Minnesota but lose to Lamar? That's like the year Iowa State beat Nebraska and finished the year by losing at home to UConn...and that was the slow downfall of Dan McCarney. You cannot have such an inconsistent season and call it a successful season. One game does not make a season....unless it's the championship game, IMO.

The point I was making is that beating Minnesota - something I do not believe USD would have even come close in the last 25 years - is progress. The increased experience and depth across the board (downfall in 2010) will be improved in 2011 and beyond.

I'd agree with you there, The Great Coyote (is that you Charlie?). 2011 is the season that should tell all of us what kind of program this is. All those so-called young players last year are now together again and with more experience. Coyotes won't beat Wisconsin, but let's see what happens everywhere else.
If its a 5-6 season, then we should all be upset.

www.argusleader.com/article/20110926/SPORTS0203/109260306/USD-poised-take-GWC-opponents?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Home|sMADISON, Wis. - With two games against major colleges, along with another contest against a highly regarded FCS squad, September was going to be an eventful time for the University of South Dakota football team regardless of the quality of football played. The Coyotes (2-2) are still two weeks away from the start of the Great West Conference season, but now, after a 59-10 humbling at the hands of the sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, are looking at the part of the season that will ultimately determine how the 2011 squad is viewed. "September has been when we played our big-time games the last two years," USD senior offensive guard Brent Johnson said. "And we'll still go toe-to-toe with anyone. We have to use our experiences as a launching pad for what comes next. We did have some positives (against Wisconsin). We ran the ball on them pretty well at times. To be able to do that against a Big 10 team is pretty good. And we were down 10-3 to a team like Wisconsin after a quarter-and-a-half. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do in the conference with that kind of effort." Prior to the Wisconsin loss, the project for the Coyotes was to emerge from that game - regardless of score - better equipped to take on the rest of the season. In the minutes after the loss to the Badgers, it was still a little difficult to think in those terms, however. "After getting beat 59-10 it's kind of hard to say that you came out better," USD coach Ed Meierkort said. "There are two ways to look at this: As long as the check clears, it's a win. That's one way to look at it. But we're football coaches and we have the 18th-ranked team at our level and we're not used to this. It's going to take some time, but we will put it in perspective - we aren't going to be the only team these boys put a whipping on." An obvious statistical shortcoming on Saturday was the passing game. While Dante Warren threw two early picks, it was the game-long difficulties (8-of-15, 41 yards) in sustaining a passing attack that ended up being the bigger problem. "There were a lot of errors we made out there that you wouldn't know about unless you were a part of the team," Warren said. "We know we made a lot of mistakes." The Coyotes face Lindenwood (Mo.), an NAIA team transitioning to NCAA Division II, on Saturday and begin Great West play against Southern Utah at the DakotaDome on Oct. 1. Lindenwood has already knocked off Northern Colorado from the FCS level, though the Lions lost 19-13 to Missouri S&T - another future USD DakotaDome foe - this past Saturday. Meanwhile, Southern Utah (3-1) trounced Division I UNLV 41-16. "Our ultimate goal is to get a ring," Warren said, alluding to a conference championship. "This game gave us some information about our team. Now we take that back against the guys we usually play against and get that conference title. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Coyotes appear to be taking as good of an approach as can be expected to be ready for the 2011 Great West Conference season.

This is an interesting topic. USD had quite the start with the EWU win but they're 0-4 now so that win is starting to lose relevance as the season progresses. The rest of your season will really tell you how good the 2011 USD football team is. You'd probably kick the crap out of SDSU right now but that will have to wait to be settled until next year (November?). Thankfully that sign is close to Brookings to remind me! Good luck the rest of the season!

I think we are at the point of the season where the Dakotadome Coyotes will go down as a success this season. I am assuming that USD will win against UC-Davis, based upon the Aggies performance to date, and end up finishing 3-0 at home against the FCS.
So the real test of the teams progression will be revealed very soon. What do Coyote fans call a successfull season this year? If the Yotes can win in Grand Forks they are probably looking at a tie for the conference championship at worst. If the Yotes beat Cal Poly they may still need to beat the Sioux in Grand Forks to win the Great West outright.
I guess this is the way I look at it. USD has 3 road games and will need to win at minimum one of them to take at least a slice of the Great West Championship. If they don't win any of them they will be looking at middle of the pack in the Great West. IMO it's a successfull year if USD can win at least one road game as long as they win the Great West. If the Yotes can win 2 road games it's definately a good year. If they don't win any of the road games I can't call it a successfull season personally.
IMO I would like to see the Yotes come out uber aggressive in Normal,IL this week. I would certainly rather lose throwing all caution to the wind than not win playing not to lose. The Yotes have a great opportunity in front of themselves and an opportunity to build upon the success of this season. Let's not play conservative or leave anything on the table these last few weeks. Lets go for it and see where that takes us.

Gotta hit this below avg secondary early this week. but gotta face it. this team needs to controll the clock play defensive football and look for blount to make some big returns thats how this team is built to win. reminds me of the way the bears and ravens win(obviously im not comparing the coyotes to either so lay off) just the fact that they are a hard nosed team is definately a different kind of usd team. agree they need to win 2 of the next 3 GWC games if they do i believe they will get a share at worst.

I suspect the reason the ISU run defense numbers look so good is because either A) teams pass at will on them and don't bother to run, or B) they sell out to stop the run allowing teams to pass at will on them. Either way, the Yotes need to show up prepared, fired up, and ready to play if they want to win this game.

Just because the vaunted BCS Minnesota team's record in the Big Ten was based on suckage, doesn't mean ISU versus the Valley sucks. Watch out for the wy we match up to UND. The MoValley could play with most of the BCS schools.
We have to come in with energy, confidence, and creativity to show them we can play, too.
