This doesn't really surprise me, but I wonder if they're contractually obligated for football next fall or if there's going to be yet another reshuffling of the conference schedule.

Wow. I know this has been rumored for a long time now. Interesting how quickly it will now happen after announcement (this summer). This will blow up the conference schedule just like when Fort Wayne left abruptly.
On another note, we should look seriously at Lindenwood. They are a very rich private school that plays about every sport, including men's and women's hockey, lacrosse, football, baseball, men's soccer and golf, etc. They just moved up to the OVC from Division II last year. Basically would be like a St. Louis version of St. Thomas U.
Would give us 5 hockey schools including some of the best in the country in UND, Denver and Omaha. A natural rival with KC (KC vs STL).

Been expected for quite a few years now. The next question is who do we bring in to replace them? Northern Colorado would be a good fit, but I doubt they’d split conferences between the big sky and summit so would need a MVFC invite.
OR
Let’s create total chaos and merge the summit and big sky and make one big mega conference with divisions.

This may be addition by subtraction. Doesn't leave us with a great number of Summit schools but WIU has to be the absolute bottom rung in the league. If we can find -anyone- to replace them it would be a wash at worst.

They would be a natural fit for the Summit League and the Missouri Valley Conference. Their enrollment is larger than any of the South Dakota or North Dakota schools.

I would like to see them in the Summit, but football is an obstacle. No way they jump from NSIC to MVFC. Dropping the sport or going Pioneer is a tough pill to swallow. They're likely content having D1 hockey and then playing half their schedule against other MN schools in all other sports (6 of their 11 football games this year are against MN schools, and their three trips outside the state are to Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls, and Minot).

Lindenwood is much closer to the schools in the OVC. Looks like their furthest road trip in the OVC is 407 miles, which is about the same distance to Tulsa or Omaha. Then you've got the football issue. The MVFC isn't inviting anyone at this point unless they are going to be a full MVC member. I doubt the OVC would want to have football-only members. If we're going to make the Summit work for decades to come we need to get this football thing figured out. The MVFC dramatically limits who can join the Summit.

How exactly has the MVFC limited who joins the Summit League? You don’t think NDSU/SDSU have a powerful voice in the conference? Patty V. likes to claim the MVFC is the SEC of the FCS, but that isn’t due to anything the MVC schools are doing. The FB powers in the MVFC reside in the SL and more importantly in the Dakotas. I can’t see a SL request for a team being denied, especially with the dumpster fire Murray St. program we allowed to join.

MVC wanted them so it was allowed. The MVFC would never have allowed this if Murray were joining the Summit instead. Anyone interested in the Summit either can't have football or needs to be okay with the Pioneer.

The MVC component know who butters the bread. Their conference is relevant because of us. And you can’t tell me that the MVC schools don’t know how big of a bone they were thrown to allow Murray State in.

Sorry I can't send you a video of Patty V laughing at the notion of throwing the Summit a bone. This problem impacts all of us, not sure why you're going head in the sand about it. The MVC holds all the cards in the MVFC because the Dakota schools have zero leverage. No amount of success is going to change that because it isn't opening any doors. NDSU wins NINE national titles and still find themselves at the mercy of the MVC schools when they decided to invite Murray State. You can't tell me the same grace would be given if the Summit decided to add a member with a football program as bad (and likely worse if they're interested in the Summit) than Murray State.
