Well said. DH is a great guy. I wish him the best of success in his next venture.

Knew this was coming someday sooner or later once his kids graduated and left the house. Hoped it would be later. Good AD, better guy.

Herbster got the job in 2013. Think about all that happened under his watch. Truly remarkable chapter in USD athletics. I think it was a seed in many heads that he would be leaving sometime in the near future, and I always assumed it would be for an AD position way up the ladder when that day came (he absolutely earned it). Skirting the usual move and changing career paths entirely shows that Herbster is built different. I'm thankful for his time at USD and hope he keeps a presence as a fan. I'm not sure I can imagine going to a game at the SCSC without seeing Herbster towering around the place.

Herbster has played an instrumental role in getting our programs up to speed after the transition to D1. I wish he’d stick around longer but from his perspective this is probably a great time to pass the baton. Most sports will now have D1 level facilities and fan interest is trending in the right direction.
The new person whoever it may be is entering at a unique time. Conference realignments may be at the top now but they’ll make it down to us eventually and they’ll have to be a part of those discussions.

Why are we waiting til Jan to start search for new AD? My guess would be timing. With the college sports seasons ready to kickoff in the next couple of weeks, good candidates are probably less likely to make a move right now. There may be other reasons to wait, but that's my guess.

David Herbster is a good man. He will be missed.

Why are we waiting til Jan to start search for new AD? I have no inside knowledge of the situation, but I speculate that Bob will be a canidate, thus we are waiting until after the football season.

I had a similar thought, and I hate how the timing then makes sense.

The extremely volatile landscape requires someone actively working in that environment right now, and they must able to spend several years in the role to navigate the changes. It would be pretty disappointing if we install someone who is coaching football this fall (and near retirement age).

There’s no frickin way. None. Bob can’t even run a functional football program.

Herbster has been a transformational piece of the University. What i appreciate about him is that he has been an excellent AD, but an even better person. Got to know and work with him as a student and always noticed how he treats everyone the same. Best wishes to him in his future endeavors.
Bob, too, is an excellent person. I have generally supported him as a coach. There is a history of him moving up from HC to AD at Duluth, which I’m sure the previous users picked up on earlier. That said, I would prefer a fresh face for the AD. Someone who can bring new ideas, connections, strategies, etc. I feel like we have really improved our athletics in some areas, all while becoming very stagnant in others.

DO NOT PUT THIS OUT INTO THE UNIVERSE. I do not care if he was the AD at UMD. This would be the dumbest thing the university could do and does not set any athletic program up for success. Bob needs to step away and retire.
