preview: (ARTICLE LINK)The Coyotes Madison Harms' 1.20 blocks per set and 55 total blocks sit at second in the league behind Kansas City's Carly Gillen (1.24 b/s, 72 TB). Harms recorded her 1000th career kill in South Dakota's match against Omaha on Sept. 23, becoming the 11th Coyote in program history to join the 1,000-kill club. The middle blocker had seven kills and three blocks on the match. Avery Van Hook has stepped into the setter role for the Coyotes and has recorded six double-doubles in 12 games, including a career-high 51 assists in USD's five-set win over Green Bay on Sept. 14. Defensive specialist Kamryn Farris has rotated into the libero position for the Coyotes. The sophomore put up double-digit digs in both matches as libero and tallied three service aces. Sixth-year middle blocker Brynn Paumen was named the Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week for the first time in her Coyote career on Sept. 19. Paumen averaged 1.08 blocks per set through South Dakota's three wins in Green Bay and is averaging 0.93 blocks per set on the season. The Roos
Outside hitter Odyssey Warren recorded her 1,000th career kill in a career-best 26 kill performance in the win over SDSU. Warren's 3.42 kills per set average leads the Roos and sits at third in the league. Senior Oral Roberts transfer Kaia Dunford is averaging 3.10 kills per set behind Warren and has put up double-digit kill numbers is every match but one this season. Defensive specialist Leah Green is the reigning Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week after totaling 54 digs through Kansas City's first two league wins. The junior's 289 total digs on the season led the league and rank eighth nationally, while her 4.98 digs per set average also leads the league and sits at 21st nationally. Sophomore setter Sydney Henry had 582 assists on the season so far, a total that ranks fifth in the NCAA and leads the Summit. Henry has put up 30+ assists in every match but one and tallied a career-high 54 assists in Kansas City's win over SDSU on Sept. 23. The Pioneers Cadi Boyer averages 2.06 kills per set and her 1.19 blocks per set average sits at third in the league behind Harms. Baylor transfer Cassie Davis averages a team-leading 3.22 kills per set for the Pioneers. The outside hitter had nine kills on 16 attempts with no errors against North Dakota to hit a season-best .563.

That last match vs Omaha really exposed several weaknesses on our team. I wonder how we will rise to the challenge against KC and Denver, two of the best serving teams in the conference. Sealock will likely be a target of serves, as she committed 3 serve-receive errors vs Omaha, and has had issues there frequently. With 7 total receive errors in that match, there are others that still struggle with passing on the team, too.
Everyone also had a bad day serving, led by Van Hook's and Wolff's 4 service errors each. I feel like that is less of a concern, though. I haven't seen a trend of it. Just a bad day where they put a lot of pressure on themselves, and were pressing? I'll be more interested in the passing.
The good news is that even in a bad game, Harms, Pauman and Loschen were blocking well. So that's a reliable group. I don't know if Deiderich's six attacking errors was an anomaly against a top blocking team, or a trend. She might be a player we don't bring out against good blocking teams. She has had some success this year at times. Maybe we start to see some more of 6-0 Freshman OH Samantha Laird, who has played well from what I've seen, but didn't play at all against Omaha. Or maybe play Johnson as a 6-rotation instead of just a DS sometimes? She is experienced, but maybe not as dynamic of a hitter?

Weekly interview with Coach Williamson: (with Assistant Michael Runde as a guest)
On losing to Omaha: "... In a lot of ways it was a game of errors... whether it was the service errors, hitting errors, ... missed cues, discipline issues... but we still gave ourselves a chance. In sets 1,2 & 3 we were either tied or ahead in the 20's. We just weren't as good in the 20's as we were in the past." "...It wasn't a skill thing or ability thing. It was just a lack of discipline in some areas.... We are working hard on being one of the most disciplined teams, we just didn't see that on Saturday... there's a lot of things we can correct, hopefully soon"
On growth of the team: "...This program is just used to winning... it's so early (in the season) that we have to make sure we're not hitting the panic button.... There are just some players in bigger roles... We're going to be very different in three more weeks... and looking back, we're very different than we were when we started the non-conference season... It's important that we see the growth... and continue to buy into that, so that in 3 weeks, or 6 weeks, we're exactly where we need to be."
On Kansas City: "I think they're playing some really good volleyball, and will create some different challenges for us. But I also think there are some things that we can take advantage of, as well. I always expect a good match with KC, it's been a good rivalry in many ways."
On Denver: "Denver being put lower on the preseason list was surprising to us. I think that people just didn't know what to expect out of them. New coach, some main players transferred out, but they obviously brought some really good players in, and kept some key players... Denver is Denver. They're always going to be good... we've started (conference play) off with three of the best teams in the league. It's a challenge, but one that we're ready for."

preview out (2nd post). Mainly just players of note for each team. Looks like Farris has been our Libero rather than Wolff for the past couple of matches.

I hate to say it but we basically just got outplayed. KC was the better hitting and blocking team. Outblocked 12-9. They hit very efficiently.
I didn’t see any massive problems on our side, other than the usual passing issues. Harms played well. Laird had a career day, and Loschen hit well.
I guess Deiderich and Van Hook getting blocked a lot didn’t help much, but Deiderich wasn’t in the game a ton. Van Hook was probably too predictable on her dumps. They game planned for her.

Stunned at the outcome last night. The last 3 sets were not even that competitive. Spoiled I guess.

Stunned at the outcome last night. The last 3 sets were not even that competitive. Spoiled I guess. It was frustrating to watch, that's for sure. The makeup of this team is much different than those of the last few years. The loss of Elizabeth Juhnke is huge, and clearly shows. More importantly, they don't seem like they're communicating at the same level that previous Coyote teams are accustomed to. Hopefully they can get this figured out sooner than later and find ways to get into the win column.

Denver destroyed the Jacks on the stat sheet (and in the match). They are playing much better than earlier this season. Two things:
1. Denver is the best serving team in the conference. They had 9 Aces (2.25/set) to SDSU's 2 (0.50/set). That could be a big factor in the game. Sealock will be who they target on serves. We can't be a bad passing team tomorrow. Boyer and Bartalo are their best servers.
2. Denver is kind-of the opposite of KC in how they attack. KC is one of the best block-avoiding teams, and Denver might be one of the worst. We only had 1.5 blocks per set vs the Roos (we average 2.28). Expect Pauman, Harms and Loschen to have a lot more success tomorrow in that category (which is normally our biggest strength this year).
