I love the line "they have scholarship players too." It's absolutely true.
I will never understand how anybody can be overly confident about any MVFC game. The history of this league is riddled with upsets, close games and surprises. Make no bones about it, the MVFC is the SEC of the FCS.
We need to be focused on getting better and taking care of business. Nothing else should be on the minds of our coaches or players (or fans).

There is nothing like D Days for USD fans, students & alumni. However, way too many people from all 3 groups do not include attending the game as part of the D Days activities. I know a lot of people, especially students and alumni, who take part in all the pregame activities, but instead of heading in to the Dome to watch the game, continue to tailgate, head to a bar to watch the game, or head to a house party. I hear some complaints that tickets and/or beer are too expensive, but I have offered people free tickets and still can't get them to the game. I love tailgating as much as anyone and probably more than some, but the game, not tailgating, needs to be the focus of all gameday promotions. Many schools, including SDSU, shut down tailgating a few minutes before the game starts and they also don't allow fans to exit and reenter at halftime. Perhaps USD needs to adopt the same policy. We need to turn the game into an event that people want to attend. The gameday experience in the Dome continues to be one of the best kept secrets in the Siouxland region. Step one is to put a good product on the field, which we now have. Step 2 is all the game day production. There are always things that can be improved, but all in all, especially compared to other FCS programs, USD does a pretty damn good job. Step 3 is to to get more butts in the seats. The larger and more engaged the crowd is, the more fun it is for all. Every game needs to have a promotion that appeals to different segments of the fan base. Use discounted tickets, concession and beer specials, etc to get people there. Great points! I thought I would jump in here to provide some insights. Our goal is make gameday, from tailgate to the end of the game, an experience. Tailgate was struggling a couple of years back so we invested in that through Coyote Alley, which we are really happy with. We make it a priority to give each game a big time feel with the tunnel walk, Coyote Call, hype video, contests etc. Some games are more heavily programmed with recognitions and other variables. Regardless, there will always be contests sprinkled in throughout the game to keep our many media timeouts interesting. As for ticket promotions, all games besides D-Days and SDSU have something going on. Game one was a discounted ticket offer to alumni. Game two discounted USD Family Weekend tickets. Next week vs. Youngstown State has some significant promotions as well. Our goal is to target specific groups so individuals cannot simply scrape up discounted tickets each game and devalue season tickets. We are always open to feedback and constantly tweaking our strategy.

FWIW, my wife was speaking with a member of the band the other day. Very busy day for the band on D-Days, so let's be sure to give them some applause. He said the highlight of being in the band is the march through the tailgate and getting to play and perform up close with the fans. I have to say the USD band adds greatly to the gameday experience.

While true about Valley teams, I don't consider Murray State a Valley football program yet. It would be embarrassing to lose to this converting OVC team, especially at home.

Having been to many, many college football games in many different atmospheres (P5 through D3), the pre-game experience is tremendous at USD and is a huge upgrade from what it used to be. Pre-game is what you make of it and who you are hanging with in the parking lots. Is it Iowa or NDSU or Wisconsin?? Not even close, but the more people that are there and together, the better the overall vibe. The challenge is to get more people at the games, so there are more people in the tailgating sections. So bring friends and family. The town or surrounding area will come when the team is consistently successful year in and year out.

What ever happened to the student tailgate section? A few years ago it was absolutely packed and wild. Is there still a student tailgate section, or did they do away with it? It was a pretty great party every week, even if most of those kids didn't make it inside.

Murray State cannot be overlooked. We need to come out and dominate all phases of the game from the beginning. Best week of the year. Go Yotes!

Murray State has huge offensive line averaging 317 6'5" +. Primary RB is 237. Their QB is quick and a running threat. Recievers against Illinois State were not impressive. D line is undersized and not particularly quick. Our running game should be able to move the ball. I have a cold so home in bed and watched the first half of the Indiana State game.

tickets are way too expensive. $50 for a game is absurd in my opinion. I have season tickets for my wife and I. But if I wanted to take my family of 5 to Ddays it would be $250. That's before gas from Sioux Falls, any concession stand items, tailgating expense etc.
You want more than just the die hard fans to start coming it will take more than ticket promotions on $35, $40, and $50 tickets to get them there. especially in years when you are not winning or like the first 2 games this year coming off a bad season last year where interest was not there for the casual fan to pay a bunch of money to go to a game.

It's not a cheap weekend. I'm already into it for several hundred for extra tickets and a room for Saturday night. But it's my favorite holiday so we do it right every year. As for ticket prices, I don't think that's the deterrent keeping people from going. Put an exciting product on the field, like we saw last week, and people will show up.

For some reason the computers don't seem to like us very much. I believe kiyoat mentioned that the computers use data from last season until enough data on the current season exists. Last season, and especially the end of it, would contain some very harmful data.
