Week 4 updates: (Dec 4)
I've decided to post all the standings and rankings on the first post in tables so we can see how things change through the season... so I'll just post any comments I have each week here, not in a very structured way.
I'm surprised that SDSU has not played any games since last Tuesday, when they destroyed Washburn 95-58. They have a big game tomorrow against Washington State, which will probably be much more entertaining than the rest of the Yotes's schedule. So far they seem to have weathered the injuries pretty well, all things considered.
-Brooke Meyer and Paige Meyer have been the scoring leaders, by a long way. They are averaging 18 and 14 PPG respectively. Mesa Byom, previously a bench forward/center, is next with 8 PPG.
-Brooklyn is also leading in rebounds, averaging 10.2 per game, so she is averaging a double-double.
As for the rest of the Summit, I haven't paid a ton of attention yet...

Week 5 Update:
I updated the new NET rankings, and not much has changed in the top-4 teams: SDSU leading USD in the top tier, and ORU leading NDSU in the next tier.
SDSU/USD now have two common opponents this year, SC State and Northern Iowa: Jacks beat SC State 72-42 (-30) Yotes beat SC State 72-52 (-20)
Jacks beat UNI 78-59 (-19) Yotes beat UNI 84-65 (-19)
interesting. State appears to have a better scoring defense, and the Yotes might have a little more potent scoring offense. Personally I'd pick defense if I had to choose, generally speaking. But I'm glad we are still talking about Jacks/Yotes at the top of the league, where we should be.
Upcoming big games:
Tuesday 7PM Wisconsin @ St Thomas (SLN)
Sunday 4PM SDSU at AP#23 Gonzaga (no TV?)

preseason poll is out: The preseason #4 team, the Fighting hawks, lost at home to NAIA Mayville State. Final score was 75-68. UND led briefly at the beginning but never led at the end of each quarter. Mayvilles largest lead was 10. I don’t think the F’n hawks will be contending for a title this year like their fans boisterously predicted.

So that’s a thing. I think we are looking at Larkins vs Meyer for POY, and nobody else comes close. Period.

FWIW, the #1 team was down by 10 at half to NAIA Dordt (3 pt game halfway through 4th). And #5 was down at half to "Sciences & Arts Drovers". I have no idea if that is NAIA, high school, a team down at the Y, whatever.

Week 6 Update:
I updated the new NET rankings, and not much has changed in the top-4 teams: SDSU leading USD in the top tier, and ORU leading NDSU in the next tier. Really not much exciting is happening in non-conference play, as Summit teams are beating who they are supposed to and losing to better teams. There are some interesting margins of victory, but the game outcomes are largely what you would expect from the W/L perspective. Other than UND's bad loss to NAIA Mayville State 68-75.
I think things will get a bit more exciting some conference play. This is basically a one-bid league this year.
Upcoming big games:
Monday 6:30PM ORU @ AP#12 Kansas State (ESPN+)
Wednesday 6:30PM Omaha @ #27 TCU (ESPN+)
Thursday 12PM #99 Drake @ North Dakota (SLN) 6PM SDSU .........@ AP#20 Creighton (FloHoops) 7PM Kansas City @ #91 Missouri (SECN+) i think this is covered under ESPN+

SDSU played Creighton admirably, and were even winning after the first quarter 19-11. The Jacks imploded offensively in quarters 2 and 3, going a combined 4-22 from the floor (18%). They only attempted 6 shots from beyond the arc in the game, hitting 2 of them. They also only had 3 FT attempts, shockingly.
From a defensive standpoint, they did hold Creighton to 58 points, 18 below their average. How are they doing it? I haven't watched them play yet, so I can only go by stats. I think I remember State being the slowest-paced team in the Summit (more on that later). So they are shortening the game, either on offense or defense. They aren't getting many turnovers or steals, but they ARE affecting the opponent's shooting efficiency%
Creighton has been shooting 44.4% FG and 34.8% 3PT, but State held them to 37.7 and 26.7. Creighton also is averaging 12 FT attempts, but only shot 5 in this game. Part of that may be the shortening of the game, fewer possessions, but I think that both Creighton and State also just play clean defense. Although State appears to be taking fewer chances on forcing turnovers.
Creighton is one of the best ball-control teams in the NCAA. They are only turning the ball over 10.4 times a game, and they only did it 6 times vs SDSU. Creighton also forced 17 turnovers in this game, three more than their average. Creighton blocked the Jacks 9 times, five more than their average.
Final score was 46-58. I think the Jacks easily have the best defense in the Summit this year, but we might have the most potent offense (sometimes). Should be a fun series.

Just before conference play starts, I'd like to look at a few team stats. Especially some of the "Advanced Stats" from Warren Nolan.com
Pace of Play (NCAA rank - # possessions/40min)* * = division 1 opponents only
4 ORU ...................82.2 (very fast)
46 Omaha ..............76.3 (fast)
105 Kansas City ......73.1 (average) 114 North Dakota ...72.9 141 NDSU ............72.2 185 St Thomas .......71.0 261 South Dakota 68.9 283 Denver ............68.4
316 SDSU ............67.2 (slow)
So from a pace standpoint, Oral Roberts and SDSU will pose two different challenges.

|
|
Post by kiyoat on Dec 22, 2023 11:42:56 GMT -6
Free-throw Attempt Rate (FTA/FGA)* *Division-1 opponents 11 Omaha ............0.397 (very high) 25 South Dakota 0.368
60 Kansas City .....0.339 (high) 65 Denver ...........0.336
145 ORU ............0.292 (+ average) 148 St Thomas .....0.290
211 NDSU ..........0.267 (- average) 218 SDSU ..........0.264 236 North Dakota 0.256
Looks like as a conference, we are pretty good at drawing fouls. Omaha and USD are very good at it, though. But who is the best at converting those attempts?.... read on.
Free-throw percentage (vs D-1) 47 St Thomas .......76.4% (good) 73 South Dakota 74.7% 92 Omaha ............73.7%
129 ORU .............72.2% (+ average) 150 SDSU ............71.4% 162 NDSU ............71.0%
282 Kansas City .....65.6% (poor) 298 North Dakota ..64.8%
343 Denver ...........60.9% (very poor)
Woof for Denver's Free-throw shooting... Looks like the Yotes are taking good advantage of their good charity stripe shooting, by drawing fouls. Look out for Omaha and Oral Roberts, as they both play at a break-neck pace, and also are good at drawing fouls. I wouldn't be surprised if those two teams are seeing opponents fouling out a lot. Our depth could help us there. The Jacks might be in trouble from that standpoint, although they might be able to control the pace better.
Let's look at one more related stat....
Personal Fouls/Game 56 SDSU .............14.7 (low) 81 South Dakota 15.2
148 Denver ..........16.5 (ave) 157 ORU ............16.6
242 Omaha ..........18.1 (high) 256 North Dakota ..18.3
322 NDSU ...........20.2 (very high) 338 Kansas City .....21.8
Looks like the Bison might be the most undisciplined of the top-4 teams. Hopefully that's a matchup we can exploit. State will be a challenge in that regard.

3-point attempt rate vs D-1 (3PA/FGA)
1 Denver ...............0.536 (very high!) 26 St Thomas ........0.427
52 South Dakota 0.403 (high)
190 NDSU ..........0.326 (ave) 207 North Dakota .0.318 230 Omaha ..........0.304
316 SDSU ...........0.254 (low) 324 ORU .............0.247 324 Kansas City .....0.247
3-point shooting %
49 Omaha ............35.6% (good) 71 SDSU .............34.7% 85 South Dakota 34.1%
178 NDSU ..........30.5% (ave)
252 ORU ............27.9% (poor) 279 St Thomas .....26.8% 305 Denver ..........25.9% 314 Kansas City ....25.5%
350 North Dakota .22.6% (very poor)
I'm surprised the Jacks don't shoot more 3-pointers. Also Omaha. Heaven Hamling is one of the best arc-shooters in the league, so the rest of the team must bring the average down. Might be easier to key on her then? Same probably goes for UND's Borowicz. I'm actually quite shocked at how bad of arc-shooting the bottom half of the league is.
