Jacks and Griz with the cakewalks. Regional my ass… As the #1 seed why shouldn't you get a bit of an easier path to start? I think it's fair to say that SDSU didn't have an easy road this season. We had Montana St. in the non-conference and the 3 conference opponents we avoided were Indiana St., WIU, and Murray St. (the 3 pretty far and away worst teams in the conference). Seven top 25 victories on the season. Pretty hard to say we've had a "cakewalk." You guys control your own destiny and there is no guarantee Montana doesn't trip up along the way. And if not, defense and running games travel and you can go in there and take them down. Would be fun to follow-up a Marker rematch title game with a battle of SD for this one.

I am seeing a lot of people in the national fcs pages saying "UND revenge game" and "NDSU cake walk to the semis." For once I hope the team see this too and uses it as bulletin board material. Use that as fuel and defend the dome!!!

The idea is starting next year they will seed the top 16 with the top 8 still getting the 1st round bye. The premise is that they committee blindly votes for the seeds and then ranks them in order so there is no conference bias. The teams are ranked by points earned and the only regionality will be the first round matchups with the unseeded teams. Now whether you believe it will actually work this way... Now I would be all for that system with the ability to tweak teams up or down 1 seed to eliminate inter conference games or season rematches. But when this can effect who gets the home game and who has to travel you can also clearly stake a claim that you do blind voting and the seeds are made by the process of those votes and stick with it. I'd be in favor of this, especially the 16 seeds. That basically fixes the geography bias in the 2nd round, and still tries to make the first round save money on travel. I'd be interested to know what the 9-16 seeds would have been this year. My guess:NDSU, Delaware, Sac State, UND, Austin Peay, SIU, NC Central, Chattanooga in some order? non-seeded 17-24:Mercer, Richmond, YSU, Gardner-Webb, Lafayette, Nichols St, Drake, Duquene in some order? I don't remember the "last four" and "first four" at-large selections from the show, other than YSU was the very last in. The main problem I see in trying to do a "blind" resume, is that you would probably end up with something that deviates from the polls to a degree that would piss everyone off. I'd rather they look at a number of different polls, and rank the seeds that way. for the at-large bubble teams, go ahead and do the blind resume thing. That can be kind of a crap shoot anyway.

As I clarified in a subsequent post.... (but I'll elaborate again for your benefit) I agree that the higher your seed, the easier your path should be. That's playoff ranking/seeding 101. The problem I have is that with the current system, in doing that for the top-2 teams, and nobody else, they are not really following their own procedure. They are just doing it. Why not just the top seed? or top-4? etc. If throwing out geography for the top 2 teams to give them an easier path is the thing they are doing, go ahead and be transparent about it. Make it the stated policy. And if they are truly going to 16 seeds next year, that essentially makes this a moot point.

In connection with the various seeding questions/issues and the NCAA paying for travel for the FCS playoffs, I have read the NCAA takes 85% of ticket revenues so they have a keen interest in attendance, playoff-site bidding etc.

You should get the easier path. From a conference schedule perspective you had a tougher go than we did. No question about it. From a preseason perspective ours was clearly tougher. Your matchup with Montana State came down to the last play. We played (5) ranked FCS schools and played #10 Missouri even through the last 40 minutes of that game where Mizzou coach couldn’t pull his starters. You could clearly build a case where the Coyotes should’ve been a #2 seed. They, like SDSU, never played an FBS opponent. Their FCS loss was to a weak Northern Arizona team. Ours was to the #1 Jacks. Our strength of schedule was higher. But politically the committee would never have had the MVFC #2 team ahead of the Big Skys #2. Montana got the #2 simply because they had (1) loss compared to our (2) losses. We can debate all if this till we’re blue in the face but I’ll try to say it another way. In my opinion there are (10) teams that can win this. SDSU is clearly the favorite but we wouldn’t play them till the Championship game if we were fortunate enough to win the first (3). We have the opportunity to play “championship” quality games in the Dome at a minimum of (2) times. (3) if Montana stubs their toe. That’s exciting as hell. This team is geared for this challenge. That doesn’t mean they’ll win, but this is NOT a case where we go into the game “hoping” to win. This team knows they can win. Period. Add in the factor that ALL of our redshirt players are now eligible to play as they don’t count towards the maximum number of games they can play, and I will bet without being factually sure that no one team will add depth to the roster like the Coyotes. Our coaches did a fantastic job of staggering redshirts throughout the season. So it doesn’t really matter who the heck we play, after the first round there will be (16) teams left, of which (10) can win it. Winning (3) on the road would be almost impossible. Winning (2) at home and potentially (1) on the road is doable. We can do this. I know for a fact this team knows they can do it. Our job is to get butts in the Dome and provide a home game advantage.

I thought the NCAA had some rules that the host team could not sell playoff tickets for a cheaper price than they charged for regular season tickets. So as to clarify, I am not complaining about the $40 per ticket price and have already purchased a block of 15 tickets for the game.

I just dropped $30 per ticket for the first round USD game. Also, noticed that USD season ticket holders have until to tomorrow midnight to get their tickets before they are released to the public. SDSU season ticket holders have until sometime next week to claim their tickets. Why such a difference in treatment between the two playoff games? SDSU tickets are much cheaper and season ticket holders get over a week to claim them, we get two days.

Mine were $40 per. I didn't hesitate paying it but I wonder if some will.

My tickets in between the 30s were $20 each plus $5 handling. I did see that the east side appeared to be less by a few dollars. The weather outlook is currently looking good for getting a crowd into DJD.

I think a school can offer playoff tickets at the cheapest price they offered their regular season tickets. SDSU had an offer for the first home game against W. Oregon for some of the seats at $10. I am only guessing here, but I would bet they did that on purpose just so they can then offer the playoffs tickets at that price. The NCAA is going to take 85% of the gate anyway, sell 'em cheap and fill the stands or at least remove a barrier that may keep people away.
In the past, season ticket holders at SDSU could get their season tickets for much higher prices, around $40-$60. Lots of folks forgo their season tickets and buy cheap tickets in the corners knowing they can sit wherever once they get there. This year, SDSU made all tickets cheaper. I appreciate that.

So as to clarify, I am not complaining about the $40 per ticket price and have already purchased a block of 15 tickets for the game. Where did you find those prices for SDSU tickets? I'm an SDSU season-ticket holder and last evening I bought my usual four seats for $20 each (my seats are on the 47 to 50 yard line, West side). I'll post this message and then I'm going to the SDSU ticket site which I am assuming you must have done before posting your message. Ticket sales are left up to each school, subject to some NCAA rules about playoff prices compared to usual and typical ticket prices at each school. ...back from checking ticket info on the SDSU Athletics website. The second-round game tickets can be purchased. Season ticket holders can also "opt-in" to buy "their seats" for the quarter-final and semi-final games and I've done that. Credit cards will not be charged for the quarter-final and semi-final tickets until the Wednesday before the game for the quarter-final game and the Wednesday before the semi-final game. So to determine the ticket prices for SDSU's first playoff game, I checked "Purchase by price" and the stated range for the public is $7.00 to $17.00. I checked the "purchase by seat" option to see where those $7 and $17 seats were located. Looks like for now, the seats held for the regular season by season-ticket holders, are not available but the will become available if the persons having those seats during the regular season do not purchase them. The price for those seats will be $17.00 plus a ticket fee of $3.00 for a total of $20.00. The $7.00 tickets include a $3.00 ticket fee making the total cost $10.00. On the east side, approximately between the 30s, the tickets are $12.00 plus a $3.00 ticket fee, a total of $15.00. I think those prices are all consistent with the lowest prices that were charged at a game in the regular season (I think those prices were in effect for the home opener against D2 Western Oregon but tickets for the remaining home games were higher with one or two games charging a premium price. SDSU broke all attendance records and the stadium made a lot of money from tickets and concessions. I suppose one can say athletic departments can always find a use for greater revenues but selling out DJD Stadium most of the season made some maneuvering room.

The playoff draw is annoying (3rd best team should get 3rd best route, right?), but thank goodness we are slotted to play at least 2 out of 3 games at home. Home playoff games are enormous! Both from a competitive standpoint and for fan engagement. We have the opportunity to tell everyone to come to Vermillion and watch the #3 team in the nation fight for a national championship at least twice in December - in the comfort of the Dome! USD hasn't had that kind of proposition since...never?
We are going to be playing very tough teams each round. But imagine how much worse it is for the teams we host. Our first opponent will be playing for the 8th (Sac St) or 10th (UND) consecutive week, and if it's Sac St that would be 3 straight road games with consecutive trips across the country. UND has been bad on the road and we should beat them handily in any normal game. Last one could easily have been 35-3.
Second game is an excellent Montana State team, or NDSU that we already beat at their place. NDSU is a scary name, but their entire title run happened in Fargo. All ten of their trips to Frisco involved ZERO road games. I don't think they can win in Bozeman but I hope they give the Bobcats hell so that a weakened MSU team has to fly to Vermillion the following week. And if NDSU does win, I'll welcome a team playing for the 11th consecutive week that we already beat once and just had to make a long trip against an excellent team.
Then the semifinals are a likely trip to Missoula. We've had some bad USD teams give great Montana teams a run for their money. It could be worse. We can all complain, and of course I have complained, but these are very exciting times for the Coyotes. We have a real path to Frisco for the first time ever. I hope we have a packed Dome ready to give all visitors hell.
