Last night State beat Southern Utah literally on the last play of the game. SUU scored with 2 seconds left and went for two and was denied. In all candor, that is a really big win for them, because of all the Great West teams I have seen the past 2 years, which by the way is all of them both home and road, I thought Southern Utah's team last year was the best.
I think State beat a really good team. It will be alot of fun when we do join the MVC in football, but there isn't going to be an easy week....period. If SDSU is towards the bottom this year of the league, that speaks volumes for lies ahead for USD. I think we have the offense to compete right now, but our defense is a long ways from stopping quality opponents week in and week out.

Watched the Usd game on direct tv then went up to Brookings with some friends and took in the sdsu game.
Sdsu got good consistent pressure on the qb. Suu's offense really got one dimensional and sdsu controlled the game up to the end. Have to give suu credit for fighting until the end. Sdsu was the better team all around. My guess is that if they protect the fb better the rest of the season they will be a top 4 mvfc team this year.
If usd's defense, and that is a big if, is as improved as I suspect - I think it would be a toss up against the Jacks. I would think the home team would be favored. The game in 2012 will be quite the event.

Watched the Usd game on direct tv then went up to Brookings with some friends and took in the sdsu game. I know that I am setting myself up for a little smack here, but that is not my intent. How did you think the two universities (SDSU and USD) compare for the the game day experience for the fans, game and everything else included? I realize that USD was on the road and you either have to compare last year's USD gameday experience or wait a week to answer my question. I have not been at a USD game in about four years. On that particular day, I took in an afternoon USD game, leaving before the end of a USD blowout of St. Cloud State, and headed to Brookings for the evening game. At that time, USD had a long way to go to catch up, but I suspect that they have made up some of that difference.

I have attended two SDSU home games every year and all USD home games for the last 7 years. (I am a USD die hard, but I have a few clients and friends that bring me up to Brookings for a few games annually. I also just love football and watching quality play, in person.)
USD has really worked hard at improving the game-day experience and they have made huge strides in that area. Still a long way to go, but it is not for a lack of trying. SDSU has more buy-in and involvement from their student body and alumni and have for years. If a past USD student didn't have a good experience while at the school going to events, the chance of them wanting to come back years later is slim to none.
Tailgating is more robust at SDSU games for sure, and student involvement looks to be way more. USD's AD is doing the right things to create a good environment, it has been slow going getting the numbers involved you would want.
In terms of game atmosphere - again SDSU has more people at the games. 10 k reported last night seemed accurate to me. USD has been reporting accurate attendance the past two years (before that they admittedly inflated the numbers.) Bottom line -SDSU has more people there on average so that is an advantage to the Jacks.
Outdoor FB is great for the die hards year around- but not everyone is in that camp for sure. The fan growth for both schools to achieve the goal attendance numbers I have heard thrown around will have to include non-die-hards. Outdoor football sounds great now, but remember the UND SDSU game last year - yikes!
The Dome when you have a lively 5000 -8000 in attendance is louder than what I have heard at any SDSU games. The Dome bottles up noise obviously and CAS has an outlet. I was at the NDSU SDSU game during your last year of transition (record attendance still, not sure but has to be close?) as well as a few games against UNI and So Ill that looked packed - they were hard fought good games and the crowd was into it - my guess is that gave me a feeling of max crowd noise at CAS, but perhaps I am wrong.
The bleachers in the Dome are a visual downer to me, and always have been. The only thing worse than brown bleachers in a FB game are empty brown bleachers. The permanent bleachers that will be put in if the renovation ever does happen, will really help. New more colorful field turf will also help the environment. I know the DakotaDome takes a lot of knocks from SDSU fans and some of the criticisms are valid. If you have not checked out the Dome in the last two years though, they have improved the sound and color quite a bit. The Dome can really be an advantage when people show up. When it is empty and people are sitting on their hands it can suck the life out of you. Should have better games to draw people out with the new conference. Getting to host SDSU, UNI, NDSU, So Ill etc should create some buzz. I will learn a lot about our fan base this weekend. If we cannot draw a good crowd for the returning FCS National Champ, I will be a little worried. It is a possibility though, my guess is the avg student at USD if asked would not know EWU is the returning champ if asked.
On a beautiful Fall day, my guess is a neutral observer would prefer to see a game at CAS. Once the cold and rain comes - heading into the Dome sure is nice.
The renovations at both Universities are going to be first rate and I think both schools are just scratching the surface of where they will be in 10 years.
Also if you have not toured campus for a few years, I think you will be impressed with the improvements and all the new buildings constructed.

Thanks fbalum.
I haven't been on campus since my daughter graduated in '08. I live in Sturgis so I don't get there without a good reason. I am glad that things are looking up as far as game day. I hope that a lot of people share your attitude about other foes other than former NCC teams. Eastern Washington coming to town should be pretty exciting. In the future you will learn to appreciate other conference foes and the good football they will play. Southern Illinois University and Youngstown State University come immediately to mind. I hope the others that I didn't mention will forgive me. It is a lot more exciting to look forward to Saturday all season long instead of just looking forward to the Saturday when SDSU and USD play.
Good luck this season.
Don.

WOW!!! The roof is falling in at SDSU. Their starting quarterback has elected to leave the team. The pressure and blame that has been put on him on their fanboard is amazing. I'm not sure and normal twenty something young man could hold up to that. Losing brings out the worst in everyone, and there must be huge problems on that team that isn't getting out.....at least yet.

But this could be what they need to get back to winning. Or it could be a long rest of the year for them. I'll be curious to see what the fanboard is like if Sumner doesnt come through.

Having a person quitting the team because the fan base was just horrible to him and having him quit on his teammates is not usually a recipe for success. I agree Sumner should've been the starter from the start of the year, but the fan base for SDSU is just awful for what they say about this kid.

Ever been to bisonville or other boards when their team is having problems? Its happens on all boards. Not that i agree with it. But its not just SDSU fans that are that way.

I'm referring to the fan base, not the kids character. Good luck to the kid. Hope he graduates and has a successful career.

Surprised it didn't come out sooner. If a kid quit because of a message board or from fans, he needs to look himself in the mirror and figure things out. He'd get that everywhere he went. This is Div. I, not middle school.

He was probably not even aware SDSUFans or GoYotes even exist. I found it hard to believe any player quits in this day and age because of what anonymous internet posters think. I know that many students, coaches, etc at USD don't even know about this site. Probably a good thing.
