I am not sure if anyone is paying attention to the lawsuit that the NCAA is trying to settle concerning players claiming lost wages in the past due to not having the ability to make money. The NCAA realizes that they will not win this lawsuit so they are trying to settle this lawsuit at a price tag of 2.1 billion dollars. The power 5 schools have agreed to pay the settlement and share future revenue with players. In essence pay players approximately 22.5 million dollars per year. Obviously the judge and players would need to agree with this settlement. It also appears that the 22.5 million number could go higher in the future pending on how much revenue is generated. I am guessing that the 22.5 million dollar payment plan would have a title 9 component which would need to be shared equally among women and men’s sports. Once again I am guessing but if Women sports received roughly 11 million dollars to pay athletes it is reasonable to assume Women’s basketball and volleyball would get the major chunk of the money.
What does this mean? I am assuming you will see many women athletes who are millionaires in college. It is also realistic to think that players who do not play and sit the bench could still be making 100k or more. Crazy times. I do not think that there is any possible way the mid major programs can keep up with this model and one would think another division would need to be created like football.
Can you imagine our great players: Koupal, Seekamp, Duffy, Lamb, Sjerven, these are players that would have been making 700k or more in this model per year. A poster on this board said anyone who left SDSU would be nuts but by 2025 you could see those players making 500k or more and obviously finishing a degree at a much more prestigious University.
These next few weeks will surely tell us a lot. It also sounds like the collectives will continue to operate outside the Universities control increasing revenue for athletes with nil. I am truly nervous about the future as it looks today. Imagine the environment of youth sports as parents are pushing their kids at a ridiculous pace as they try to push their kids to obtain life altering money. Hold tight! It surely appears that mid majors are being set up to be farm clubs. The head Mens coach at Toledo even said he is recruiting kids saying come to Toledo and we will develop you so you can go to the Big Ten in two years. He ultimately said that he cannot fight it so embrace it
