Hello Everyone!
I have consistently watched from the stands and actively followed this message board. Please be nice to the new guy. It always delivers a couple of laughs and fills me with Yote pride. The season is around the corner and thought I would get everyone's opinion on the season.

Welcome friend. I'm just looking for consistency, really. We had success last season, now I want to see that year in and year out. Excellent result for me would be a conference championship and a deep playoff run. An acceptable result would be finishing in the top 2 or 3 in the MVFC and see what happens in the post season. A failure for me would be missing the playoffs. With how much experience we have returning, we should all expect to be in the hunt at the end of November.

My current prediction for the 2024 season
Northern State - WIN 50-0 This program is in bad shape and the Head Coach is on the Hotseat. Easy early WIN
Wisconsin - Loss 7-38 Physically we will get pushed around upfront. I hope we can play a close game until half-time and take the money.
Portland State - WIN 28-23 They should start the season 0-2 but we play them at night on the West Coast. PSU is a mid of the road Big-Sky team but will problably give us a good game at home.
Drake - WIN 60-3 Non-scholarship easy win at home. This game should be a blow out by half-time. 2023 season vs Missouri Valley UND 55-7 / SDSU 70-7 / NDSU 66-3
3-1 in the Non-Conference
Southern Ill. -Toss-up game This game at home should help but SIU is going to be good this season.
Murray State - WIN 42-6 New staff and team in 2024 but the only thing hard about this game is being in Kentucky.
UNI - Toss-up Dakota Days should be crazy loud game. UNI lost the OC late this summer but normally wins at the Dome.
YSU - Toss-up This road game has always went the Penguins way. This place is hard to play at and YSU has a good team coming back.
SDSU - Loss - Please be tight until the end of the game. The distance was close a couple of years ago between these two programs but in the past couple of years they started pulling away. We must recruit better if we plan on betting that no-class group up I-29.
Indiana State - Win 32-3 We always destroy Indiana State at home. This program is at the bottom of the league.
North Dakota - Toss-up We have a bad habit of playing poorly at North Dakota.
NDSU - Loss 14-28 They got after us in the playoff game. I don't see them looking past us again in 2024.
2024 Season We have a great schedule just like we did in 2023. 5 Guarantee WIN games 3 L's on paper 4 Toss-up games
9-3 Best case 5-7 Worst case 7-5 Vegas projection

It will be hard to exactly replicate our regular season results from last year simply based on the fact that we will likely be considered underdogs in 3 of our games, but, barring an unfavorable match up in the playoffs (like a pissed off NDSU team last year), we should play deeper in the post-season. As a fan, I want to predict 9-3, but I wouldn't think about placing a bet on a line higher than 7.5 if I bet on my teams. Mostly, I'm hoping to see no bad losses, more consistent offensive production, and continued improvement in our strength and toughness. Our losses to SDSU and NDSU were physical beat downs that showed we weren't quite "there" yet. I think we are "there" now.
This year's roster is the deepest and most talented USD has had since I started following the program. We have more juniors on the roster (26) than we had upperclassmen on last year's roster (24). We have 49 total upperclassmen this year. The roster is finally balanced and experienced! Furthermore, the transfer portal has been good to us. We only lost one big contributor in Nate Thomas, but the RB room is still loaded. Otherwise, the only noticeable back ups I no longer see on the roster are Earl Miller and Todd Drummond. As with the RB, we shouldn't miss them much either. As for incoming transfers, we gain much more than what we've lost to the portal with guys like Mike Reid (DB, Monmouth), Quaron Adam (WR, Iowa State), Carter Hooper (DE, UConn), Hayden Erickson (TE, Utah), Nevan Cremascoli (QB - Northern Illinois), AJ Coons (WR, SDSU), Marqui Lowery (DB - Michigan State), Connor Morgan (DL - Cornell), and Garrett Coon (RB, Montana State). That's an influx of talent and depth from a bunch of solid to great football programs. I think Mike Reid will start and be a potential all-conference player and the rest will make a significant impact in the two-deep. We're well positioned to maintain our top 10 program status this season and sustain long-term success.

I’d put those games in the category of matchups that we could lose if we simply fall well short of our standards, but we go into them as comfortable favorites. YSU is an example of a road game we used to struggle with due to youth and lack of leadership. I don’t think that’s going to be an issue with this team.

Definitely excited about the upcoming 2024 season. Congrats to all the players that were picked MVFC Preseason All Conference. We definitely have some talented kids on the offensive side of the ball with JJ Galbreath and Carter Bell absolutely being two of the best in the conference at their positions. Defensively, Nick Gaes and Dennis Shorter being recognized as two of the best is really nice to see because Nick Gaes is dominant when he wants to be and completely healthy. The topper is having Will Leyland as the best kicker in the league and Carter Bell as the top returner. Overall, having 12 total kids recognized says a lot about the talent that we are recruiting over the past 5 years.
My expectation is that our offense will make a nice jump in productivity because our OC and offensive staff now has a good grasp of the talent on the roster and who needs to get touches, we struggled with that last year at times. My philosophy has always been 75% of your production should come from 25% of your players especially in the most important games. Defensively, of course there are major roles to fill, but I trust that our DC and defensive staff will put our guys in the right positions to succeed at a high level, consistency will be the key defensively because we are very good up front (especially with a few transfers coming in) and not exceptionally deep but somewhat experienced on the backend and Reid transferring in helps a ton.
Not going to put a number on it because the MVFC is a gauntlet, but I do think we have a team that can make the playoffs again and compete favorably with NDSU and SDSU if we improve our QB play and consistency defensively series to series in those games. As we all know, this league is won up front on both sides and I do think we have improved immensely over the past 5 years in that department. Can't wait to get this season started.

I just hope we fill up the Dome last years attendance was not very good I've got my tickets again and re-upped the extra pair we bought last year. Although I stupidly scheduled meetings out of town on that Thursday of the Northern game. As for increasing general attendance, let's put together another season or two like we had last year and I think we'll start seeing those numbers come back. Getting boat raced by UNI at home two years ago had a bigger effect on attendance last year than people realize, IMO.

I think a lot of people took a wait and see approach last year after the massively disappointing 2022 season. It certainly feels like excitement is coming back. I, for one, am proud to announce that I’ve finally pulled the trigger on season tickets. #beastside

On the attendance front, I have picked up two more season tickets this year due to demand I was receiving from friends & family for game tickets.
As to predictions, I am holding back. I think we'll be good. I hesitate because it just seems we don't string successful seasons together and I don't want to get my hopes up just to be disappointed. The 2022 season was mentioned. Consensus on this board was that the team was good going into that season but that the record would not be indicative of how good the team was because the SOS to start the season was ridiculous. That bad start combined with some other challenges sunk that season before it got started.
Honestly, I just don't get "fired up" by any of the sports teams I follow anymore. I watch the games and am a fan, but about one minute after the game is over, I've moved on regardless of the result. I've come to the conclusion it's just entertainment and it does not affect my life. Maybe that is apathy. If it is, I have apathy for all sports and all teams I follow. I think though, it is just a product of age.

It's just a game and has no real bearing on my life as an adult, but I've invested too much in the program as both a player and fan to let it go now. I ride the highs and wallow in the lows. A blessing and a curse I guess.

I’ve always enjoyed reading your take on things bobo. Hard to disagree with your analysis. Clearly the big question is Defense, namely CB and LB. I watched a ton of Spring ball and we do have talent at those positions and I think Johannsen just becomes better and better each year as a coordinator. His side of the ball always competes. Offensively, on paper we should be good. RB is absolutely loaded. OLine is experienced but do lack some depth there. Bell and Galbreath are getting the recognition they deserve but the player under the radar is Jack Martens. Coaches rave about how complete of a slot receiver he is so he’s a legit 3rd option. QB is a question in my opinion. We have to be better at that position to compete and win. I like Bauman but I hope there is growth in his play. If so, we could be really good. Maybe the bigger question is who is our back up QB? Has that ever been established the past 2 years? I have no clue who it is. Specials should be solid all around. Would love to see Bell take more chances on the punt return, not an easy job but he’s so quick and shifty that I think he could break a few if the coaches give him the green light. I look forward to the season because the stars are starting to align in this program.

I'm not sure what to expect with some big names on defense gone. We absolutely have to make the playoffs and sustain success as a program though.
Looking down the schedule, I think we had better have 8 wins in hand when we head to UND. Otherwise we are going to be on pins and needles about a playoff berth.
