Pretty simple analysis, this should not be much of a contest. Yotes can't overlook them but this one should be in the bag by halftime. Play half as good as this past Saturday and it's a W.
The Rangers are 0-2 on the season and were just hammered by Colorado State-Pueblo (D2 RMAC) 41-0.

Poor Rangers, they come to Vermillion once again after USD got a huge win. Last year they played USD after the Minnesota win, now its after the Eastern Washington win.
I'll take USD in a snoozer, 47-14

I know the ones and twos will need to get some work in but I hope to see the backups get some playing time. See what Vander Maten can do... check out Noah Pearl...

The mantra for this season has to be "finish." While this is a game USD should win comfortably (we beat these guys last year 48-14), there's something to be said for a crisp effort.
One thing I've been thinking about since before this season even started is how many key seniors we'll be losing heading into our first season in the Valley. Hopefully Saturday's game provides us a glimpse at some of our younger, non-redshirt talent.
FYI - this 0-2 NWOKST team was the preseason favorite to win its NAIA conference.

See what Vander Maten can do... check out Noah Pearl... I am also interested in seeing Noah run. However, if he hasn't played yet, I hope they aren't going to pull his redshirt just to put him in a game against an NAIA team. It is one thing if he is getting reps so he is ready if someone ahead of him on the depth chart gets hurt, but I think he will be a good one and would like to see his carries count in a full season's worth of games.

He has already been playing special teams this year. Should be fun to see him - Ed says he really has burst and hits the hole.

So, if I'm the coach, do I spend a little practice time on Wisconsin this week? Or is looking ahead the wrong thing to do?
I'll answer my own question and say it is probably not necessary to do so, schemewise. Not like it's Air Force. Wisconsin runs a pretty plain offense, actually similar to some of the stuff USD does, they just do it very, very well with really good players. I'd spend this week on working on OUR game and being sharp on OUR assignments and running OUR offense and defense. I think we can pretty much dictate the game this Saturday and win it on athleticism and brute force alone.
I'll be honest, it would be hard not to look ahead. Going to Madison is a chance to shock the college football world on a level higher than App State beating Michigan given Wisconsin's current ranking and success.

While it's never good to overlook any opponent I think the next game worthy of thinking about would be D-Day vs. Southern Utah. This week should take care of itself, what we're gonna do to NW OK will be done to us the following week and following our Wisconsin beat down we've got another NAIA team. However, don't look ahead to that yet!

The Yotes can't overlook this team or coast during the 2nd half. That will set them up for a bigger loss in Madison. (Reference last year's downturn) Make no mistake, the Air Force game should have been a W. SD was better at each position accept for discipline. To stay a ranked team, you have to play like a ranked team. Break the opponents' will to play. Continue to shove your talent and game plan down their throats while getting the 2s and 3s plenty of reps. That's what Wisconsin is going to try to do to us.
There are still have weakness on the O Line. The QB has been running for his life the last two weeks and forcing the ball in to poorly disigned sideline patterns that were weak at division 2. The plays are catch and fall instead of catch and run. The best receiver can't get open because of double coverage, while the speed guy runs into coverage. The possession guy is not on the field enough and the TEs can't catch. The receivers as a whole don't fininsh their routes if their not recieving the ball and don't adjust to QB scrambles. The QB would rather throw an interception than throw it away.
Defense has got to keep attacking and move Starr all over the place. The CBs have got to get better. There are to many time eating marches. The Safties aren't going to always get picks.
Right now these negatives are are small compared to the talent. If there not fixed this week, they'll be huge against the Badgers. Once fixed, every other game will be a Win.

I remember a few years ago Wisconsin had a pretty good team and a good Cal Poly team came in and took them to OT. I remember a Nebraska team last year that was a few minutes from a Big 12 title that an average SDSU team took to the limit. I remember James Madison beating VaTech.
Wisconsin has Nebraska coming in a week after USD. It will be hard to NOT overlook USD. These are 18-21 year old kids, not pros. While I'm 90% sure we'll get our butts handed to us, there is always that 10% that remembers those games and reminds me that we always have a chance, no matter how remote it is.

This will be a bigger blowout than last year. Key difference is that SD has much better #2 and #3's. Expecting 300+ yards on the ground Saturday.
Hope there is a good turnout by the fans.

If you remember to last year's game with Northwestern Oklahoma State, they ran back a long kickoff for a touchdown and an early 7-6 lead.
Coyotes can't let that happen again.
Though, I still expect a huge win. Give the backups a majority of the snaps in the second half.

Wow, my prediction of 47-14 was pretty close.
Final score was 48-10.
Great start by the Coyote offense, and the defense continues to really impress me. Tyler Starr is a beast, two more sacks today.
