One of the best ways we can get butts in the seats is the AD has gotta start making game days an event, which basically means you gotta attract people in with something else and then get them to stay. And then it’s gotta be a university wide marketing/advertising push. Right now your casual fans need more reason to go vermillion for the non d day or rivalry games so you gotta plant that seed and keep watering it. For the interim until ticket sales increase for the general public let’s let the students fill as much as they can. As many have pointed out you gotta win the students and then over time you’ll get the rest. But that’s a long term plan we still gotta get a short term one going. What do you mean by something else? I’m not arguing with you I’m just curious by what else is out there in conjunction with the game that would draw fans?

We have a really good football team if we can stay healthy across the schedule. Not saying that we will beat everyone, but we have the roster, athletic talent, and speed to compete well if we stay within ourselves and stay one step ahead against the best teams in the league. Our defensive line is really good, physical, well coached technically, and deep which causes issues for opponents in the run and pass game plus Nick Gaes is a tough tough matchup 1 on 1.
Offensively, the plan of attack vs Drake was a little more in line with what's needed attack the MVFC. I do, however, feel we need to diversify our passing attack to win in league. As we know, some teams in our league will not allow us to run the ball as we have and force us to win 1st and 2nd down through the air. I love the play-action and RPO game we use, but we need to continue to develop it as well as our quick passing game and perimeter screens as well to use them as runs basically. Our drop back game is basically non-existent so we must be really efficient on 1st and 2nd down.

It’s a fair question, I was more getting at give them that Gameday experience that draws them to Lincoln or Iowa City. We’re obviously not those schools and lack certain things but if you can generate the hype and then back it up with something to hype up, which includes a great game, people will get curious.

Tough crowd. That Drake team is much better than many of you are giving them credit for. Passing game is working out some issues and working on getting into a rhythm - still some work to do, but not surprising since it was just the 3rd game, and there wasn't much desire to throw it in the first two games. Penalties were a legit concern for both teams. But in fairness to the players that is a LOT of practice over the past couple months with only playing 1 or 2 games. There’s a couple of posters that complain or criticize no matter what. Two years ago they wanted Nielsen gone. He couldn’t coach. Admittedly he mishandled staff changes but that’s an error in loyalty. This staff is solid. I fully expect to be in Frisco in January. These kids had only played 2 games, that’s it. To be razor sharp is not gonna happen. We are going to compete for a MVFC title. This roster is rock solid and deep. I expect a 14-17 point win Saturday, against a SIU team that is really good but starting QB is out. It was a 4 quarter fist fight last year in Carbondale. You know, I was thinking on Saturday evening that the Yotes are in a perfect position. All of the conversation (and pressure) nationally is on Idaho, Montana's, and the XDSU's. Yotes are an under-the-radar team who is ranked 6th, but I think I might take the Yotes to win on a neutral field against all 5 of those teams right now.

We've certainly come a long way when most of us feel sort of dissatisfied with a 42-3 win, me included. We'll see what we really have next week. This to me is a sign of a good football program. Didn't play all that well and still came away with a 42-3 victory. I know many have mentioned this already, but this isn't a normal Drake team. They have an impressive win at Eastern Washington. Looking forward to the Southern IL game!

What do you mean by something else? I’m not arguing with you I’m just curious by what else is out there in conjunction with the game that would draw fans? It’s a fair question, I was more getting at give them that Gameday experience that draws them to Lincoln or Iowa City. We’re obviously not those schools and lack certain things but if you can generate the hype and then back it up with something to hype up, which includes a great game, people will get curious. Again not to argue or post something negative, but I will use Iowa State when I reference things only because I’m most knowledgeable about GAMEDAY in Ames than Nebraska or Iowa. When Joel Nielsen was AD, he had zero interest in providing something ( anything ) to go along with the football game. Honestly, I think he was lazy and didn’t want to put forth the effort. But I told him then there were 3 things that were needed. 1. SMOKE 2. MUSIC 3. BALLS IN THE AIR What did I mean by that? Smoke from grills at tailgates. And lots of it. Cooking and chillin with friends, family, and USD fans in general. Combine that with your favorite beverage and now you have 3 hours prior to a game taken care. Music….people at tailgates playing music on their outdoor speakers, the USD band, or the voices of announcers blaring through TV’s setup at the tailgate ( announcers in lieu of music also works ). Lastly, little kids playing catch with their dads or buddies. Tossing the football or punting. When those 3 things are happening in conjunction with one another, now you have fan involvement. Joel argued and said USD fans didn’t want that. I looked him in the eye and said I’m a USD fan and I do. And I’ll prove it others do. So my wife and I ( literally just us two) parked on Dakota street just west of the Dome and fired up a grill. We brought something like 20 burgers and 20 brats for ANYONE that wanted to eat. We also had an outdoor speaker bluetoothed to my wife’s phone or iPod and blasted as loud as was feasible UPBEAT music. And lastly I inflated a couple of old footballs I had in my garage and just laid them on the ground. In a short time kids went by and asked if they could use them. Now you have BALLS IN THE AIR. In seeing this Nielsen then opened up the south of the Dome parking lot and sold spots. Sold out 1st year. Then motorhomes appeared. Huge grills. Speakers on stands. I had a guy go to the top of the Dome and film it. Even though it wasn’t like a Big 10 or Bug 12 venue, it was us. People were having fun. Music blasting, kids tossing balls, adults throwing down a couple of cold ones. The rest is history. What would be nice is if we could fill the east side / north end of the Dome with more and more fans. People socializing, getting ready for the game. Not sell those spots to ******* politicians who could give 2 craps about the game. But real fans. I would invite anyone / everyone to the northeast corner of the Dome parking lot to come tailgate with the RED BUS group. There’s a ton of food, a bar, and an outside TV or 2 watching games already in progress. Mingle….get to know each other and let the momentum build. Why do I bring this up? Because what I think yote18 wants or is asking for, is already there. Sometimes you just have to push to make shit happen. I watched this board over the years say this, that and whatever. Usually in a negative tone regarding football. Now we have the 5th ranked team in the country, 70 degree days, and every opportunity to capitalize on this moment. I’m telling you the Coyotes have the making to get it done. And as Dorothy said in the Wizard of Iz….theres no place like home. Drive to Vermillion. Partake in the pregame festivities, and if you don’t have a tailgate spot then most certainly come to the RED BUS. If you need a parking pass, let me know,I’ll try and get you one. This team has earned our support. For years they had to read CRAP. We’re past that. GO YOTES And the Iowa State reference? Tailgaters down in Ames start early, stay after, and have seamlessly meshed several tailgating spots into one. That builds comraderie.

Just sell out (1) stinking game that isn’t D-days, tailgate prior, and raise hell inside and tell me that isn’t infectious
