Regarding Ruthie, I had heard the same things. Sounds like a big work in progress. Totally agree on rankings of players. Doesn’t mean squat. We are going to struggle with defense in the paint against any kind of opponent with a post. I also noticed the difference in playing off on the perimeter. That could be because St Louis couldn’t shoot. It’s going to take a couple games to see what we got. I know right now I wish we had a couple girls back from last year. But I’ve also heard some things about last year and I am surprised we have girls left. Here’s to getting better!!

If we had our shots hitting in the first quarter, I think the whole tenor of that game is different. I don't know if it was just shots not hitting, first game nerves, or how their defense was affecting our shooters, but it seemed to me that we were simply missing on good looks.
It happens. That's why defense/ ball control is so critical. Coach P knew that, Coach E knows that. Coach K didn't.
I saw a lot of good/great things already in the way of defense/ rebounding... maybe not so much on ball control. I have confidence in our coaches and players. There will be a learning curve.
The Jacks and Bison appear to be starting off running, so it will probably take all season to catch up.
Liked seeing Gabby in briefly, and Groman can hit from the arc. Hopefully the lack of post players was due to the matchup.

Unfortunately, I think the lack of post presence is a state of our personnel currently and not situational. The game winning shot was on a low block post up. Hopefully Ruthie can work her way in and be at least a rotational player come conference season or we are going to have a really hard time defending. We were only as successful as we were tonight because Saint Louis had multiple players we just refused to guard outside the arc.

Yeah, I’m gonna hold off on any grand pronouncements one way or another but like I said earlier, SLU couldn’t shoot AT ALL outside of the one kid they wanted on the block anyway. And they weren’t particularly big.
I liked that the staff recognized that and played it but they still gave up 85 in a loss … and that certainly won’t work at all against, well, any type of NCAA Tourney team.

Let’s not forget that the prior staff didn’t really leave us in a position to hit the ground running. The fact that we overcame an 11 point halftime deficit to begin with is something that we rarely saw before. It’s going to be bumpy and not pretty at times but this staff has to basically teach this team the fundamentals again and they gotta gel.

No, I agree. Like I also said, it was a hell of an effort. They never gave up at all. That’s deserving of kudos and respect.

Honestly, a season opener where you are able to have an OT situation is pretty ideal, from an experience standpoint. And confidence. We will figure things out much quicker the more opponents like that we are able to face in the non-conference season.

Made the comeback all the more impressive. If the 'Yotes hadn't started 1/15 from three game might have been a different story.

It is smart defense. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s going to be feasible against most opponents. And that unavoidable stretching of an already undersized defense is probably going to be fatal against any teams that have a decent big and a couple shooters.

Maybe, but I doubt they use the same strategy for all opponents, either. I'm not so sure size is as much of an absolute requirement to play elite defense in WBB as is is in the men's game. Remember the 2017-18 Yotes that led the league in defense without a true post? They did OK. Don't get me wrong, good bigs are worth their weight in gold in both games, especially in the tournament, or when playing SDSU. But an athletic/small women's team can be effective.

A team that has a solid big and some shooters is going to be a really tough team to beat any way you slice it.

And it’s one game so easy to overreact

After watching just one game with the new coach I am very optimistic. Felt like there was an actual plan unlike the last couple years. Excited to see what they will become as the year goes on.
