First quarter shooting was lights out. Hard to sustain that hot start. Especially with the lack of defense intensity. We stood around so bad in that zone. Especially in the second half. I’m assuming the altitude played a factor in fatigue. Turnovers were also the big story. After watching our game I tuned in to the SDSU/Creighton game. 😬 Different level right now.

A couple of other problematic stats in addition to the turnovers. Offensive rebounds: Air Force 18 and USD 4. Field goal attempts: Air Force 74 and USD 52.

It is hard to rebound in a zone, but the offensive rebound stat is crazy. Coach E has to keep experimenting with things to get ready for conference play. (But I'm not sure a zone is the answer...)

First off, I did not watch the game, but having leads of 26-11 and 39-21 and then getting boat-raced the rest of the way by a middling team is discouraging.
They lost the possession game by 25.
Twenty-five.
With the caveat of it "being early", I am of the opinion that their disadvantage on the interior (both in guarding the rim and rebounding) is so vast that it's almost impossible for them to have a real competitive team this year. They have some talent. There will be games where they look good. Grace will probably win a couple by herself. But that one area will be too tough to overcome.
I was a bit surprised at the optimism after the first game. I think we need to be prepared for it to be somewhat rough.
Now maybe Wilke will get more run and start to develop. She had nice numbers in seven minutes last night. I'm sure she will be foul-prone but I'd like to see her get more minutes.
I would guess Carrie will need to bring in two posts via the portal. And probably a point guard. I think Groman was supposed to help at point but it's still just Grace from what I saw in the first game.
Problem is, unless there are a couple walk-ons on the roster now, I don't know if there is room. Of those late 2024 signees, my guess there is a walk-on or two.
Hopefully we will see some progress and as Carrie implements her principles they will figure out how to win more games than I think their talent shows.

Being the regular voice of optimism, I have to agree with 90yote and Men's League WB regarding the reality of the team as it stands. It's going to be a challenge this year, no doubt, especially reaching the standard of competing for SL crowns.
I would also love to see a PG to free up Larkin more, but perhaps Grace with the ball in her hands is the best strategy right now.
Wilke looked good, and though she's obviously getting accustomed to D1 basketball, didn't seem overmatched or lacking in confidence. It will be good to watch her development. I also believe Carson will bring more to the team this year, and I think we missed her in last night's game.
What a complete change, shooting 70% early, and then in the 3rd and early 4th, just looked completely unable to score. You expect to cool off, that's a given, but the complete opposite was troubling. It gave me some "deja vu" from last year.
Hoped for more defensive improvement this year, but it seems that we are scheming to our strengths, which results in the zone/sagging defense more than I would hope to see.
I have confidence in our Coaching staff, and I have patience for a new staff to build THEIR team, so my comments are just from a wishful fan.

Only 2 games in to a new season with a new coaching staff with a lot of new players so still a lot of unanswered questions.
- Was the inconsistent play between halves at Air Force a continuation of what we say at home vs the Billikens or was it the result of playing a high altitude? - How good of job will the new staff do at developing players, both returning and new? There were players under Coach P that I initially thought were not D1 talent, but were key parts of some great teams as they spent more time in the system.

Gotta say I thought the zone was an odd choice against a team that wasn’t big or all that athletic. And it only looked worse as the game went on and you couldn’t locate a 5-10 kid and keep her off the glass AT ALL. But at the same time, I get trying it out because they see what we all see. You’re not going to guard any decent big man up this season.

You’re not going to guard any decent big man up this season. Zone could have been a strategy due to attitude fatigue. Pure speculation, but certainly a possibility especially since it didn't make sense personnel wise. More likely she's basically using it as a live scrimmage to prep for conference play where it might need to be used.

Another observation, except for Grace, we are limited in the speed department. And watching some of the rebounding we have some girls that appeared to be in the right position, but just unable to get up and haul it in. I was hoping some of the freshman could bring another gear of speed to the game. But if they’re not ready to play the speed probably wouldn’t help. I’m not a huge transfer portal person, as I think it kills your culture. But I think we are going to need to go after some things for next year.

You can coach everything except for speed and that we are lacking

With all the height Carrie brought in, we should not have to be looking in the portal for that. Ruthie, Karley, Hannah, and Gabby are all supposed to be really good recruits. Unless one or more is going to redshirt, I think (like with Gabby) they need to get some game experience. Is Ruthie injured? say this especially because of the lack of height that has been playing with so far, which resulted in giving up 18 offensive rebounds. Even with the 21 turnovers, it was the second or third shots per possession for (and the second chance points) Air Force that lost the game. Turnovers (21) and free throw shooting certainly contributed, but we need some height on the floor.to plug the middle and rebound. Is Ruthie injured?

Yeah they are definitely thinking they’re going to have to be able to play a fair amount of zone this season. I just thought they probably didn’t have to play as much as they did last night against that particular opponent. But they know a lot more than I do about why they did what they did and what they’re doing. I get that. It’s a build.

Karly appears to be redshirting, along with three other freshmen, including Coons, who tore her ACL in August 2023. Coons is not a post from what I've seen. You can review other threads, but based on some sourced information and the actions of the coaching staff in the first two games, Ruthie is not playing because, at least at this point, the coaching staff does not think she's good enough to play. Again, at least right now.
