Have fun at the game. Holding down the fort in Verm. Somebody has to be here to burn couches after the big win.

Here are the lines on some games of area intrerest:
NDSU Minnesota -6 USD Wisconsin -49 1/2
If I'm Coach Ed I'm giving the boys the "they put their pants on one leg at a time" speech.
Cannot even imagine the press if USD pulls the miracle win. It would be the biggest win in college football this season and replace App St v Michigan.

I'm not sure where people keep getting this 'Wisconsin runs the score up BS' but it's really not true. Those scores were the result of our system. Most teams these days pass to score and run to grind clock and give the D a rest. Not UW. Running the ball is what we do so when a team is overmatched the score can get out of hand. If they can't stop us what are we supposed to do? Should we kneel the ball for the whole 4th Qtr? I would be way more insulted by that than a team scoring a couple garbage tds with their back-ups in.
The Austin Peay game was a bad D-1aa team vs the big ten champs. Enough said.
The Indiana score is the result of a team completely giving up. They weren't even trying in the forth. The second half TD pass (one of three passes we threw in the second half, the other two were to the fullback) that gets some much play for running it up was a broken play on third and long from our third string QB to a freshman walk on WR. He just threw it up for grabs and the wideout made a nice play when the defender mistimed his jump and walked into the endzone. The last td was a 16 yard naked bootleg where the scout team QB (Mike Tice's son, so obviously not the fleetest of foot) juked two defenders who just stood there and watched him walk in.
Going for two against Minny was legit running it up but there was a history between the two coaches that played into that. If anyone but Tim Brewster was their coach, we kick it in and it's a non story. That was personal between the coaches.
Bottom line is that we have a really good line with solid depth, so theres not a huge drop off when we go to our second team. When your third string RB runs for over 1,000 yards and 14 tds, you have some serious depth and teams that can't hang get buried. But this isn't steve spurrier throwing the ball downfield when hes up by 40. We run the ball between the tackles and if they can't stop it, thats their problem.
Sorry about the opening rant! Heres to a good, injury free game. Good luck Yotes.

That score certainly was not the result of Wisconsin running up the score. They stomped us in the air. They stomped us on the ground. They stomped us with their starters and they stomped us with their reserves.
We all know we were over matched going into this game, but the glaring problem I come away with is the most unimaginative play calling I've ever seen anywhere.
How many times did we hand off the ball up the middle from the pistol formation? Granted, i don't think it would have mattered what we did, but jeez, that was painful.
Glad that's over with, time to move on.

When we take our qb out and you don't. When your team is calling timeouts before half to tack on another one for the ticker. Yes, you are running up the score. I watched the game with Iowa and Nebraska fans. They think Bielema is a db for what he does. I hate the Huskers but hope they beat the Badgers.

I thought the Coyotes gave a good account of themselves. With 6:00 left in the first half it was a 7 point game. That is a good showing. Of course after that Wisconsin had a few things go right before half and the Yotes predictably wore down but overall I am not concerned about the final score. The Badgers are damn good. They are like they have always been but this year they actually have a very good quarterback and some receivers that can put a scare into teams, perhaps unlike in the past.
Overall I am actually happy that the playcalling wasn't very imaginitive especially after the game was out of hand.
The bottom line and what I will judge the Coyote on this year is 6 games. I think everyone should do the same.
vs Eastern Washington vs Southern Utah at Southern Illinois at Cal Poly vs UC-Davis at North Dakota
Those are the games that USD should be judged on this year. The other 5 games are simply not an accurate judge of this team. Because of that I am actually quite satisfied so far on what the team has done. To me the Yotes are 1-0 and still have alot of proving to do. What I hear out of Ed's mouth this year is better than last year and in past years. He seems to have the Yotes focusing on the FCS games this year. He even stated that the Eastern Washington was a bigger win than Minnesota when it came down to it. I agree.
I also like the fact that the Yotes are concerned about finishing in the 4th quarter. What that means is that the conditioning will have to be supurb to match the lip service. The Yotes achilles for so long has been finishing. I hope they take that to heart and show us this year that they are serious about doing just that.
I am taking this season as a "show me" first and I will believe later season. The Yotes need to put together a season where they play their "A" game for the majority of it, unlike what we saw last year.

Great post as usual Mr. CF! I hope you are back here on the board. As far as I am concerned you are sorely missed.

I truly think that USD played about as good as they are able. They were playing the Badgers! They scored 10 points against the Badgers. Yes, they gave up a lot of points but again it was the Badgers, a team that has scored a lot more points against bigger and more experienced schools. I had Wisco fans sitting near me that really thought it was going to be an 80 to 0 score. They weren't being a**es about it but they have a team this year that is very good. I was impressed that we kept the penaltys down. I don't think you have to worry about the Yotes unless they play poorly against the rest of their schedule. Wisconsin is that good. They also know how to show you a good time!

Went out to the Wisconsin game with my family -
Awesome environment to see a college football game. Wisconsin is a very good team and our guys were as outmatched athletically as I have seen. That being said, you could tell our guys came in ready to play hard and without any fear. Really proud of their effort and still as excited as ever to watch them in GWC play. SUU is shaping up to be a battle.
Once Wisconsin figured out that SD was going to sell out to try and stop the run and pressure the QB, they shifted to the play action package and it was all over.
Sims is looking like a beast. He has improved every year in the program.
Often times SDSU fans and USD fans take shots at each other for their poor taste - the UW student section (about 13000 in attendance) had a surprising chant back and forth that I had not heard before from a student section. One student section would yell (Eat Sh**!) and the other section would yell back ( F - You!) over and over and over throughout the game.
Great to have my kids asking me during the game - "Dad, what are they saying....?"

usdfbalum,
Glad you had a good time at the game. A chant like that is just plain stupid. It doesn't really get anything accomplished, is not funny and just offends way too many people. I am not one to really get offended too easily but a little more originality probably wouldn't hurt from the Wisconsin students.
I wish I could have gone to Madison but there is no way my budget would allow it right now. So far so good for this football season. Alot of work remains to be done but I am getting a sneaking suspicion that this time around our team is going save a little bit more of something for the middle and end of the year.
I want to clarify on what I said yesterday in a post. I don't think USD should always be in a vanilla mode of scheming against an opponent but I also kind of wanted USD to go into stay healthy mode and play 2nd stringers mode once they knew it was a lost cause. Losing to Wisconsin really doesn't mean much from a long term outlook. I would much rather USD do everything possible to be ready to play their best football against the BIG 6 FCS games this year. Whatever that means is up to interpretation but lets hope that the team saves their best for the truley most important times of the season.
I would rather lose to Lindenwood and/or Missouri S&T and beat UND and Cal Poly if I had the choice. It might be an embarrassing way to get through the season but winning the Great West would be awsome on the way out. USD needs to take everything that has happened over the past few years and process it and learn from it. When a program gets a huge win, maybe a little less celebration is needed if that celebration takes away from the mental preperation of the next (just as important) opponent.
USD must beat Southern Utah as home if it's to have a legit chance to win the Great West. How USD does at Cal Poly and at UND may decided what kind of a year it's going to be.

Rather lose to Lindenwood or Missouri S&T than beat UND or Cal Poly? While that sounds great and all, ask UND what it's like to lose to a program that is in NAIA or even bouncing up to NCAA Division II. I don't think they have lived that down yet.

My point is I would rather lose to Lindenwood and Missouri S&T and beat UND and Cal Poly if I had to choose that over beating the non D1's and losing to UND and Cal Poly. Of course the preference is to win them all. I think you know what I meant but just in case this is for clarification.

I didn't get to see the 1st half of the game but did watch the second. Wisconsin is the 7th ranked team in the nation for a reason. They are a tough team. It was good to hear the announcers on the Big Ten network give praise to the USD fans for traveling so well.

It was also nice that they made it a point that the Yotes beat Minnesota and Eastern Washington. I was watching and listening for that during the broadcast. At least they did a little homework on the Coyotes. Hopefully Wisconsin was happy to be pushed for awhile eventhough the game ended up one sided.
