The off season is over for the most part. Our real season begins Saturday with a Dakota Days game against Southern Utah. I was out there last year and they made us look totally inept.
On Saturday, North Dakota beat them out there. If you look at total stats, SUU won and wasn't really close, but the Sioux found a way to win. SDSU beat them in Brookings earlier this year by 1, so now it is our turn to take care of business.
I hope the Dome is filled to the brim saturday. This game is huge for USD, and will defintely give everyone an indication of where we are as a program. We have one week to chime in and make predictions. I'll save mine till around Thursday or so.
Let's win the Great West.

The Yotes just have to win this game. It's game one and already an elimination game as far as I am concerned. I doubt the Yotes would run the Great West table if they didn't take care of business this saturday. My pick Yotes 38, Southern Utah 21

This is game two. Eastern Washington was the main first game, honestly. Even though they aren't in the Great West and have fallen on hard times this season, it's still a win over the defending champions.
The most interesting thing is if Dante is playing or not. If he is injured, I would expect Marcus Sims and Chris Ganious to get a lot of carries. Sims is really turning into a beast. If Dante does play, he might run less because he doesn't want to aggravate his injury I would be. Interesting to see how well he can pass because he can be spotty at times already. The receivers are always there though with Powell, Nowotny and Blount.
USD did a good job against a strong passing team in EWU, so they have to duplicate that against Brad Sorensen and a strong SUU passing attack again. It's definitely important for USD to get a good amount of pressure on the QB, which the Coyotes have been doing this year with Tyler Starr out there.
Those are the keys for me.

I agree on Star being key, but add Giese to the mix.
On offense, both Josh and Dante will need to get more time before getting flushed out. Will is locked down with double coverage on every play and the other receivers aren't able to get to the break in their routes to see they need to help the QB. I hope Wes can make an adjustment.
I think the the CBs need to keep bringing the heat on these highly rated QBs that throw for 3 and 5 yards that get their WRs(RBs) in space to run for 40. They make good decisions, but can be picked. We've proved that before. Our success on O will force their QB into turnovers.
Yotes win, but it's going to be 4 full quarters

SD 31 - SUU 17
My guess is SD will get really physical with SUU and run all over them. UND's smallish RB (Jake Miller) had some good success against the SUU run defense. 162 yds on 32 carries. Miller is a young underclassman RB and looks like a skinnier/smaller version of Noah Pearl.
I think Sims /Ganious/ Warren and/or Vander Maten will collectively put over 200 yds on the ground against them and control the clock. Really think SD can win the game with Vander Maten at QB and would be all for them getting Dante completely healthy versus having a potentially lingering injury the rest of the season.
From what I have seen this year, the SD front DL/DE/OLB are better than ND or SDSU - both teams pressured the SUU QB pretty well. I expect the same out of SD Saturday. We have seen what the athletic SD DBs can do when the defensive front gets consistent pressure.
Ed and staff felt embarrassed last year out in Cedar City - I cannot envision a scenario where our guys are not ready to beat these guys.

Good luck to the Yotes this weekend. Thought I would pass along my thoughts on SUU.
1) They hurt themselves numerous times this weekend. - Dropped snap by the punter in the end zone - safety - Three personal fouls - extending two scoring drives for UND. - Snap through the hands of the holder on a FG attempt. - 12 yard punt into the wind - giving UND the ball on the 20/30 yard line. This leads to FG for UND.
Offense: - The 20/25 mph wind impacted the offense for SUU. They struggled getting the running game going.
- The TV commentators did say that they lost two of the lines best blockers. Not sure if they are out for the season or just day to day.
- The QB for SUU is good. Let’s put it this way SUU has lost two games both games had 20/25 mph winds which limited the SUU offense to two quarters. In a dome, he is going to be trouble. He has a nice pocket presence.
Defense:
- They had problems against a power running game... other than that they looked OK. Secondary looked lost a couple of times.
- D-backs like to jump routes.. they have 4 or 5 pick 6s this season.
I think this game is going to be shootout.. and a fun game to watch. I wish I was in Vermillion to watch.
I go with USD 38 SUU 32

well SUU might not have to factor wind but hopefully the noise factor will be just as impactfull. It's good that the Coyotes seem to be better this year against the passing game. If true that will certainly come in handy on Saturday.

i hope for 10 k plus saturday... we have a good team that buys into our coaches. its such a huge game but i wont say its our super bowl, however i like us at home final 24-17... suu will be mad after a tough loss... this game is going to be a battle. heard something awesome on saturday from the players after i said nobody was there... a couple looked at me and said its our job to get them there and i hope that the dome is packed on our last game against a d2 team when they realize we are for real. we love our coaches and our teamates and we refuse to be failures

A big and rowdy crowd will be very helpful on Saturday! SUU likes to make a lot of play calls at the line of scrimmage so 10,000 'Yotes screaming would be great!

Will be interested to see how the team reacts if Dante cannot play Saturday. The Yote defense has improved enough to take control of a game and win without a the offense scoring a ton of points. Vander Maten has done well when he gets in there - with a week of preparation with the 1's, he should be even sharper.

I don't know if he is officially out but it doesn't sound good. His hand is still swollen.

Ed said Monday at coaches corner that even if Dante does not practice at all this week, but shows up Saturday and feels like he can play - he will start him. I got the sense from the staff that they are proceeding and planning like Dante will be a no-go. Charlie Goro would be the emergency QB if Vander Maten goes down.
