I don't think it's a question that needs to be asked because there is definately a crisis with basketball attendance. School is not in session but that doesn't quite explain the lack of fans and lack of cheering for the most part. I am actually a part of the problem to be honest so I will take my fair share of the blame. I used to never miss an important game and somehow over the past 5 years I have gotten to the point where I almost never come anymore. I have personal obligations that keep me from games but if the motivation was high enough I would figure out a way to make the trip to the dome more often than I currently do.
The things that kind of stand out for me is the stale atmopshere in the dome along with the mens team really not having a realistic shot at winning the Summit League title. Not being tourney eligible certainly doesn't help but it's only a small/medium factor. One thing that definately plays a factor is the lack of doubleheaders. That gives me 2 for the price of 1 and makes a trip south to Vermillion a little more worthwhile.
I hate to say it but I am not even that excited for the games against SDSU this year. The Women I believe will be interesting but on the Mens side I am shocked how much behind the Jacks that the Coyotes have fallen. Without season tickets sitting in the nose bleeds may be the deciding factor in going vs staying home. I will admit (eventhough this shouldn't be the case) I still hold a bit of a chip on my shoulder from football season for being able to buy a row 6 50 yard line seat 2 days before a game but get pushed out of my former spot only to get a worse overall view if I was to buy season tickets.
As well as Sayler has done with some things is how poorly it appears the administration has done in promoting Coyote basketball. There are no coaches shows, a very subpar radio presentation, no advertisements about the games. I just don't feel very sold on the idea of why I should come to watch a game. Don't say out of loyalty either because if that was the case every alum within 2 hours of Vermillion should be at every game as well. From the stands to the boards following hoops seems to be a dying breed around these parts.
I think watching bad basketball sucks, but watching basketball that bleeds disinterest is even worse.
What are the reasons that everyone else isn't going to home games this year.
