I think Luper gets it. Team has a better conference record and USD isn't even eligible for the conference tournament. I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying I think that's what is going to happen. USD will get slighted this year because they're new to the conference. I'm sure she'll get first team SL though. Good analogy and I agree for all the wrong or selfish reasons.

All other factors being equal, do you give it to the player from the team that is new to the conference or the player from the team that is leaving the conference?

I will have to disagree. Lisa Bue from NDSU was named regular season MVP in 2007-08. That was NDSU's first season in league and not eligible for post season tournament. NDSU finished tied for second in league behind SDSU. Luper is a great player and has won the last two but this year I think Hegge is having a better season.

I would like to think neither one of these should/would be deciding criteria. However, anytime the selection has a subjective element to it, anything can happen. Who votes and decides....coaches, media, league staff??? Looking at league game only stats, it feel it tilts towards Amber. But Luper is an extremely special player, no doubt about it.

We'll find out in a few weeks!

It's awfully difficult to make a comparison without having the actual numbers. Since ORU and USD play a very different non conference schedule I am going to take conference numbers only since those are the fairest comparison between the two. I have Hegge with 4 categories to 3. The rebounding advantage is huge and she also has more assists as well. Not included below is that Hegge also shoots more free throws as well.
Points per game - Advantage Luper but ORU plays a faster paced games than USD
Hegge 20.3 Luper 23.8
Rebounding per game - An obvious big advantage to Hegge
Hegge 9.4 Luper 3.8
Assists per game - Surprisingly this category goes to Hegge fairly easily
Hegge 3.5 Luper 2.6
Turnovers per game - Big advantage to Luper
Hegge 2.85 Luper 1.67
Steals per game - big advantage to Luper
Hegge 1.14 Luper 3.66
Blocks per game - obvious advantage to Hegge
Hegge 1.78 Luper .33
Field Goal % - predictably to Hegge
Hegge .483 Luper .456
Both players are obviously very good but Hegge plays a bigger part of USD's total offense than does Luper IMO. As far as defense Hegge is an intregal part of taking the inside away from opponents. Luper is likely a good perimeter defender but I doubt that she is the different maker on defense than Hegge is. Hegge is a better bet when she shoots to score than Luper does. As far as three pointers Luper has 21 to Hegge's 9 so neither has made a huge amount of 3 pointers.
I think Hegge deserves the player of the year based on the numbers and based on the difference maker she is on both sides of the floor especially defense. I am assuming that Luper has participated in many more possessions than Hegge to accumulate her numbers. USD slows it down and ORU uptempos.

Conference play starts in December. Hegge has been Summit Player of the Month in both December and January, probably on her way to winning the honor again in February.
How does she not win the Player of the Year then? It'd be a clean sweep.

I think Luper has 4 as well. Below is from the Summit site. This does not include the one Amber just received yesterday. Also, Amber was Player of the Month for both December and January. Previous 2011-12 honorees: Nov. 15 - Kevi Luper, ORU; Nov. 22 - Amber Hegge, USD; Nov. 29 - Kevi Luper, ORU; Dec. 6 - Stephanie Rosado, IPFW/Kevi Luper, ORU; Dec. 13 - Brittany Carnago, OU; Dec. 20 - Amber Hegge, USD; Dec. 27 - Ashley Eide, SDSU; Jan. 3 - Dayon Hall-Jones, UMKC; Jan. 10 - Bethany Watterworth, OU; Jan. 17 - Katie Comello, IUPUI/Carli Moreland, SUU; Jan. 24 - Amber Hegge, USD; Jan. 31 - Bethany Watterworth, OU; Feb. 7 - Kevi Luper, ORU. I guess I cant count. I only counted one or two, at first glance. Being a SDSU grad might have something to do with it, who knows, but you are right Luper does have four weeklies to her credit. This makes the choice more difficult. I am pulling for Hegge btw. Lastly if a school is invited to compete for the conference championship but not the big dance, this should not be a weighing factor. Bue should have gotten some recognition in 07-08, but did not and she was a quality player as is Hegge. This transition period is cruel enough as it now stand, but to deny the best player in the league recogntion is wrong.

If Amber Hegge doesn't get Summit player of the year it will be a travesty. I know that Luper girl from ORU is a great player but Amber is arguably having a better year. I would be curious if the State fans on here agree she should be player of the year? She has carried USD on her back again tonight. All around amazing year. More than just a scorer, at or near top of several categories. Luper is a scorer but not sure she has all around game of Hegge. Young had a tough game tonight, I'm not aware of any other player in the running? I'm not saying she is in the running and coaches always talk up their opponents but Western Illinois coach said that Jen Sunnenborg (SDSU) should get it. He said this after Jen went 9 of 10 from the floor and 3 of 3 from 3-point land against them(I think). That might have something to do with it. He said everybody talks about Luper but Jen can take over a game. When I heard this, I instantly thought of Hegge. Hegge does more for USD than Jen does for SDSU. I think SDSU just plays so many more players it's really tough to win something like this. USD's top 6 play most of the game(from what I can tell) but SDSU will go 10 deep 5 minutes into the game. I read the comment about USD being new to the league so Hegge might not get it. I look at Luper and think of ORU leaving the league so would you want to give it to her(if she isn't clearly the best)? I know some people will look at Luper just because she won it last year. I'm not really into that either. This isn't endorsing Jen, it's just what the coach said. It's tough to argue against being player of the week 4 times. I think Jen should get 3rd but it's a 2 horse race. 1- Hegge 2- Luper

How does she not win the Player of the Year then? It'd be a clean sweep. Actually, Luper's Dec 6th would count because there were conference games on Nov 30th and Dec 2nd but there weren't any other conference games until Dec 29th. That would mean that both Hegge and Luper won the award 4 times and both won it twice during conference play.
