Hello, Marquette fan here. First of all, I want to recognize that as a MU fan, I know the sting of a transfer out. I know it way more than I'd like. However, once in awhile guys transfer out for reasons that aren't mind-boggling. Jake left for the same reason many non-athletes do....to be closer to home. It's hard to "beat up" players that leave for that reason amid all of the other reasons guys use these days.
Anyhow, there has been debate among the diehard MU fans on what Jake is going to bring. It's hard to get any real sense of his abilities from box scores or youtube.
Is he simply a one-trick pony? Can he do anything else at a fairly high level?
Does he have the athleticism and potential to be a serviceable defender at the Big East level or is he destined to be a matador?
Is he a heady player? Are there any notable intangibles?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck to you guys next season.

This is the real situation with Jake. He was brought into USD to shoot the three pointer first and foremost. Everything else was gravy as far as what we expected to get out of him. He was probably my favorite new Coyote when he was a freshman. Everyone always said that "Jake can shoot it, Jack can shoot it". The fact of the matter was that he wasn't shooting it as effectively from outside that USD had hoped. From what I saw he doesn't have the skills to make it in the Big East if his outside shot is not falling. Alot of the time that he had on the court was against the very weakest competition of D1 in the Great West Conference. The Great West is/was a glorified D2 conference and Jake didn't dominate against that level. When he left USD he was not a Big East type talent.

Jake did have a decent freshman year shooting the three and showed decent rebounding and defensive skills. Something changed over the summer as he NEVER looked happy and I made the comment fairly early in the season that I thought he would transfer. There were a lot of stories but I usually believe the first one and that involved sharing playing time with the coaches son. That should never have happened and it had a bad effect on Jake. I don't think he will light it up there but I do believe he can contribute. Good luck to all, he deserves better than how it went here.

He was a pretty good three point shooter, but don't expect him to play much defense.

Agree with most of the comments. Jake has the shot to be an effective spot-up shooter in the Big East.....just don't expect big minutes or much of anything on defense. Unless he's put on some muscle, he doesnt have the strength. Curious to see how he does out there.

Thank you very much for the insights. It will be interesting to see if he can ever become more than a situational role player. I'm hoping that by the time he is a 5th year senior that he will have developed his athleticism/strength enough to warrant more time on the court....but I'm not holding my breath.
I'll be rooting for you guys. The newest DI team in WI (UWM) made a quick turnaround into a winning program, so it may not take as long for you as some think.

For what it's worth, I compare Jake to Steve Kerr of the Chicago Bulls. Get him coming in as a key reserve and set up a few trips down the court on offense where he is coming off a screen or, even better for his skill set, where a player makes an extra pass to a wide-open Jake and he'll knock most of them down. Good, likeable kid who is hard-working with a bigger up-side than most people realize. Look forward to seeing him in action for you guys!

Good, likeable kid who is hard-working with a bigger up-side than most people realize. Look forward to seeing him in action for you guys! I think he does have a lot of upside at MU as you say. The offense is about as uptempo as it gets and they transition at every opportunity, including after baskets from the opposition. He should be open for three in transition. More importantly, it will be hard for opposing defenses to focus on him, so Jake would definitely get a lot of wide open 3's if he's given the minutes. There was recently a quote from one of the assistant's that they gave him the nickname "Cash" because he's been nailing 3's all season in their practices. I'm thinking he could get a lot of playing time because he will be the only "pure" shooter on the team.....MU really has no one else that is even decent at shooting the 3 next season. The coach is also notorious for subbing guys in and out for offense/defense every chance he gets. So, I think there's a good chance he will do that with Jake. It will definitely be interesting to see how he is used.
