I heard an interview on the radio today and apparently Sayler didn't even know Williams was a candidate for a while into the process. I am not sure whether it was required or not but CSU didn't even ask permission to interview Williams. I wish Ryun the best but in my book this really stinks. We have 3 of our biggest coggs to our success over the past decade swept out from under us in one fell swoop. This is a huge slap in the face to all Coyote fans to have our recent history just robbed from us. I know we are supposed to say we are happy for Ryun and what not but thanks for not even leaving some crumbs for us to chew on after leaving the program pretty much high and dry. Williams, Koupal and Lavin. Holy crud that is like grand larceny at it's greatest. I hope we kick the crap out of Colorado State next time we play. I question whether permission is needed to throw your resume in the mail, which in this case Williams apparently did. I think that he got an interview is the key to his hiring. He came across very positively in the interview and bingo, he has a new job. I suspect that Sayler did find out via Williams when he went went there for an interview. If he chooses to take his assistants with him, thats the breaks of the game. Mandy may have felt more comfort in following the leader than up to stepping in as a HC at USD.

Lavin wasn't even on staff right now, and it sucks to lose him and Koupal, though, but not like a new coach would've kept everyone. He might have let Mandy go as well, albeit I think she has the potential to be a great coach. I don't think permission is needed because the coaches are just on one-year contracts. If it was multi-year contracts, I think they need permission to ask. But yeah, if Williams sent his resume, there is no need to ask permission.

Agree, Koupal probably feels honored to be part of Williams new team. A new coach who most likely will come from a national search will no doubt bring his/her staff with and yes Mandy would not have a job. We sure liked her at SDSU as a player and I was among the many disappointed people who watched her transfer to USD. Also as far as I know, you are correct about the multiyear contracts, permission is needed. The school that wants to hire has to buy out the remainder of the contract. That part might be the stumbling block for the BOR in changing from 1 year to multi year contracts.

Per the following link www.coloradoan.com/article/20120521/SPORTS/305210021 in addition to a base salary of $150,000 Williams will receive an annual bonus of $37,500 for meeting meeting the NCAA's expected graduation rates and not committing any major rules infractions and an additional $25,000 apiece for winning 20 games or a conference title, up to a maximum of $62,500 for advancing to the NCAA Tournament. There's an additional $50,000 bonus available, should his team reach the Sweet 16.

If Williams applied...permission to contact is out the window...the assumption is that the candidate bears the responsibility to tell his boss. If Ryun didnt apply...permission to contact is common courtesy.

Five year contract for Williams at CSU. After the Meierkort situation, whether fair or not, no good coach will likely stay at USD (or State) when offered a multiple year deal at a similar or bigger school.

After the Meierkort situation, whether fair or not, no good coach will likely stay at USD (or State) when offered a multiple year deal at a similar or bigger school. A multiyear contract has is ups and downs.Like I said in a prior post, the hiring institution has to buy out the remainder of contract. In USD case, Williams on a one year contract that ends in June, does not gain much maybe a months pay. If Williams had a 4 year contract paying 150k, and he was in his first year of the 4 year contract, CSU would have pay about 450k to USD. This really a stumbling block forr the SD schools. Do they have a half million bucks lying around to buy out some one else contract if this candidate had a good coaching record and was worth his salt? This might be some of the problems SD schools might encounter down the road.

Ryun'contract is really only a two year contract. If he was let go they only have to pay him one years salary.

Any idea what Ryun was making? I read in Terry V's blog that sdsus coach was making 157k, how far off are we from being able to pay that salary?

For some reason, the news media reported it as a five year contract. There is zero upside for a coach to stay with a school offering one year contracts if the coach can get a multiple year deal.
