I have found out that Colorado State will name Ryun Williams as their next women's basketball coach. I'm sorry to see him go, he is a class act. Best wishes coach on your new venture.

No doubt a great coach and tough to replace, given budget constraints that both USD and SDSU face. I believe he was a finalist for the SDSU job when we hired interim coach AJ Johnston. He was still at Wayne State at the time. The guy knows his game, and will do a good job at CSU.

This could be a big disaster for USD but is definately going to hurt alot. I thought Ryun was going to be the guy for a very long time. Guess I was wrong with that train of thought. If there was one coach I could put a tag on to keep him at USD Ryun Williams would be that coach.
I wonder which of his recruits will follow him out to Fort Collins.

According to the Argus, all the incoming freshmen are going to still come to USD. No word on the juco transfers yet.

Argus article mentioned six signed letters of intent. I can come up with five. Who am I missing?

Before this post SDSU had twice as many posts on this topic on their board than USD has on it's own board. Doesn't that come off as just a tad disturbing.
USD really has this thing heading in the right direction and I just hope that all the momentum that has been built up isn't going to have a dramatic hault to it. This is going to be a challenging hire for Sayler to come up with someone that has what it takes to keep this thing going. I don't know if any internal candidates have the credentials to take over or not.

Best of luck to him. You know you have a good hire when he gets recruited by a bigger school. And I think it likely they have multiple year contracts at Col St.

Chad Lavin going with as an assistant coach and will be a huge help to Ryun. We have to rally behind the new coach and hope he or she will do the job well enough to attract the same interest. I know it was tough on Ryun to make this decision, but he helped us a lot in his four years and hope his success continues. How about home and home?

Coach Williams was an amazing hire from the first time I heard about it at USD and recruited his butt off and really brought this program to the level it has never been to before after taking over for one of the greatest coaches in USD history. That definitely is not easy at all.
He is leaving the program in a great spot, and this is a great hire by Colorado State. He is a young coach with a bright future and this is not something he could really pass up you would think.
I wish Coach Williams the best of luck and hopefully the players realize that a ton of people would have done the same thing, even them in the future...
I know he recruited Caitlin Duffy and she chose CSU as well, so he got one of the players he wanted haha.
In terms of the future coach, while I respect the assistants, I don't know if they are ready to fill Coach Williams' shoes. This should be interesting but I am guessing there will be a lot of interest in this job, no doubt.
One person that I would take a shot at would be Tim Eatman, as assistant at Boston College and has coached under some of the best coaches in women's basketball and rebuilt the Illinois-Chicago program. Don't really know what his interest for this job would be, though. Just putting a name out there.

Lavin may not be the only coach going with Ryun.

I don't know if any internal candidates have the credentials to take over or not. I really hope that you don't think I'm putting him down as a coach because I think he is a good coach but was USD really heading in the right direction? USD had a really good group of juniors and seniors that included Hegge. I think she should have been the player of the year in the conference. You don't normally lose a player like that and still be as good. They have 3 of the 5/6 players that played back and not much experience after that. The next year or 2 would have been tough(probably) even if he had stayed. Does he have some juco's or redshirts that will make up for the 60% loss in production? I don't know much about USD's underclassmen so I could be way off because they didn't play much. This is more about USD's seniors and specifically Hegge than putting Williams down. He is a good coach and USD would probably be better with him leading the team. The new coach will have a tough act to follow because of him and them. I just enjoy watching players like Hegge and Koupel play. You knew that they would bring it every night and try to carry their team if it was needed. The SDSU fan in me hope USD doesn't get another player like them soon but the basketball fan in me just enjoys watching them play.

USD should take a look at Jaime Berry. Berry was a grad assistant coach at USD two seasons including the 2008 title run. She's been a winner every stop along the way except for the last couple of years when she has been an Assistant Coach at NDSU under Head Coach DeHoff -- and I think the blame for NDSU woes falls squarely on DeHoff's shoulders. Berry and another NDSU assistant had the good sense to resign from NDSU about three or four weeks ago. (DeHoff should have been canned mid-season and Berry installed as interim so that she could show what she could do with the injury-riddled Bison.)
Berry was a third-team all-American for the Bison and started on the 2000 D II national runnersup team. Berry's a Watertown native and the older sister of SDSU standout quarterback Ryan Berry. The Berrys are from a long-line of successful athletes and coaches with roots in North Dakota.

I wonder if there is some bias in putting Berry's name as a candidate. I don't think she has anything close to a resume to be head coach at USD. How someone does as a player has very little to do with how they will do as a head coach. Some players are good head coaches some are not but someones playing ability doesn't really correlate to coaching. USD's program is definately better than NDSU's and has been now for well over a decade. She just simply doesn't even come close to have enough coaching experience and especially successfull coaching experience to be considered for the job. I am not saying she would or would not be good but she needs way more experience. Has Berry ever even been the top assistant at a program?

I heard an interview on the radio today and apparently Sayler didn't even know Williams was a candidate for a while into the process. I am not sure whether it was required or not but CSU didn't even ask permission to interview Williams.
I wish Ryun the best but in my book this really stinks. We have 3 of our biggest coggs to our success over the past decade swept out from under us in one fell swoop.
This is a huge slap in the face to all Coyote fans to have our recent history just robbed from us. I know we are supposed to say we are happy for Ryun and what not but thanks for not even leaving some crumbs for us to chew on after leaving the program pretty much high and dry. Williams, Koupal and Lavin. Holy crud that is like grand larceny at it's greatest.
I hope we kick the crap out of Colorado State next time we play.
