I have been sitting in my easy chair tonight just pondering and reflecting on a lot of things. Tom Berg just sent another update regarding Coyotes at the Olympic tryouts. We have 3 ladies competing for a berth on the national team, and a former Coyote and now assistant coach trying to make the Olympics for his 3rd time. Anyway, all that being said, it made me think how lucky we are to be part of USD, not only the athletics, but the school as well.
Stop and think about it. We aren't Notre Dame, or Stanford, or anyone of that stature, yet we have 3 kids fighting their guts out in attempt to be on the USA Olympic team. That makes me proud. We came through transition, and did moderately well. Starting with fall sports, despite what everyone's feelings about Ed Meierkort were, he elevated the program and put us on the national map. Beating Minnesota was a big thing, and truthfully, I think we'll do it again. Stop and think about that day. Most USD fans will remember where we were that day when we heard the news. holy cow
Then the lady Coyotes volleyball team has done exceptionally well. They are extremely well coached by a guy who gets it. What he gets is that college sports is also meant to be fun for both the student athlete and the fans. Coach Houck is one hell of a coach, and he is putting together a team that will compete with the "big boys" of college volleyball. And he does it the right way.
Men's basketball needless to say slipped some, but if you examine the life and career of Dave Boots, we are extremely fortunate to have him on our sideline. I do believe he will right the ship. Women's basketball just hired a new coach that I met in SF for the first time, and she is impressive. I have to believe that we are going to stay the course that Coach Lavin and Coach Ryun Williams laid the groundwork for.
I know less about softball and soccer, but it appears on the surface that they have vastly improved. If that is correct, then we again are hedging in the right direction. Track and Ild speaks for itself. Our coaches are not only very good teachers of the sport, they are really decent people.
Then with the prospect of a new arena and a renovated Dome, how can you not be excited about our future. President Abbott is nothing short of amazing in what he has done for this school. He gets stuff done. That speaks a mouthful about having a businessman as your president. And Dave Sayler has done a good job in his first two years. Very likeable person that is a great family man.
You know what? Make fun of Vermillion all you want outsiders. But we do have something very few people do have, and that is a very large "family". If you graduate from USD, you are special. And the people you got to know along the way are special. And the times you had here, and have here, are special. It really is a great day to be a Coyote.
Let's support this school with more than you've ever done. Give freely of your time, talents, and cash. This is one chance that we never again will have to make a difference.
AREN'T WE LUCKY?
