Ok since Boot's took over at USD lets compare what the basketball program has gone compared to the football program. There is no comparison. How many conference titles and playoff births did Boot's have and how many did the football team have. It a night and day difference. Boot's was not able to have too many great years but he has been solid for the most part over the past quarter century. I never said I was firmly in the keep Dave Boots camp but I am more open to suggestions than the people that go around making excuses for a football program that has been pathetic over that same quarter century span. The football program has one third of a conference title in a small conference and one playoff birth over 25 years. Can't you see now why I lose such patience with this football program. It spans over a long time not just a knee jerk reaction. CF#2 I know that you haven't been a fan as long as I have so you don't know what it is like to sit through all those losing seasons. That is why I am so outspoken and why I tend to lose a gasket much quicker with Coyote Football. I would have slept alot better over the last few years if Coyote Football would have been contracted upon the move to D1. There have been way too many heartache moments vs truly satisfying moments. Way too many. I am an Iowa State fan, a USD, a Minnesota Twins fan, a Minnesota Vikings fan, a Minnesota Timberwolves fan and a Minnesota Wild fan, so don't you ever say I don't know how to sit through "all of those losing seasons." I have dealt with plenty of losing seasons, thank you. Boots' teams have done little to nothing since the move up to Division I, plus the last year in Division II was a big disappointment. Like I said, you do not hold all of the programs to the same standard. This has been a 5-6 year thing for the USD men's basketball program and nothing has ever changed with this program, especially the lack of perimeter defense.

What is your solution for the basketball team.

I have said before multiple times that I hope this is Boots last year and that he retires because this is Jordan's senior year. I have said before, I do not think at his age that he will adjust his system for the D-I level. So instead of firing him or letting him go, I would want to see him retire and such, but so far I do not think his system carries over to Division I.

Well, Boots is going to have to walk away because there is no way USD is going to fire him. He has too much history and has too many boosters on his side. He's been a great representative for the U and does things the right way. Something would have to go very, very, very wrong for him to be shown the door.
I too would like to see some change in philosophy (go deeper into the bench, let people out of the doghouse, less minutes for a certain player on the team) but what the heck do I know. It's basketball, I don't have a clue when it comes to this sport.

I really don’t see Boots retiring after this season, and I wouldn’t want him to. His talk a couple of weeks back at Lunch with the U. in Sioux Falls was more energetic and inspirational than any of his previous talks I’ve witnessed. I think he’s pretty excited for the opportunity to coach D-I basketball without one arm tied behind his back. Let’s just face it, it’s hard enough drawing D-I talent to Vermillion. It’s even harder when your program isn’t eligible for postseason play. We now have that to offer (as well as an arena project). Boots was very complimentary of our transition players, but he made very clear that all of us should expect to see elevated talent and results in the immediate future. I think we’re already seeing a glimpse with Kasperbauer and Flack, who are performing very well. I’ve mentioned before that I think we’re probably a year away from being really, really good, and I think Boots said as much in Sioux Falls. We’ll be dangerous this year, but very green. I think we could finish in the upper half of the league.
Next year is when I think we’ll be really dangerous. A more seasoned Flack (who Boots referred to as the “most athletic big” he’s ever recruited) and Gruis in the paint. North Texas transfer Trey Norris, who the coaches absolutely love, running the point. A host of players available for the two spot: sharp-shooting Kasperbauer, 6’5” Utah State transfer Adam Thoseby, and 6’3” Tyler Larson, who was the projected starter this year before suffering a knee injury. Karim Rowson, who is also playing pretty well, and Steve Tecker on the wing. Then there are Eric Robertson, Brandon Bos and Jared Bartling ready to step in. I think we’ll have a ton of depth next year. And let’s not forget any new guys we bring in that are immediately equipped to contribute. The future, on paper, appears bright.

From listening to Boots and talking to people in the AD - Boots is not going anywhere. He is excited about this year and really excited for next years roster. In his mind at least next year will be a chance to make a run at the Summit Tournament.

Yotemeal, while I am not high on Boots right now, especially with how bad the matchup zone has been in D-I, I have been extremely pleased with this fall's recruiting class and last year's recruiting class. Flack and Kasper seem great and I have only heard great things about Norris as well.
The Southern loss has me a bit down because I know how good they are and aren't because of the SWAC.
I do have to disagree with Boots' assessment of Flack, though. Tyler Cain....most athletic big who has the shot blocks record, gotta give it to him right now, but I may be bias.

As I see it, Boots will be around for a while. He has had a focus on retiring comfortably; summers on a lake and going some place warm to play golf in the winter. Unless the SD retirement system has changed, the Rule of 85 (age plus years of service = 85) still must be met. I think he is about 55 years old and even with a "buy-in" he is probably short a few years. Putting all that aside Dave is very competitive and I don't think his pride would allow him to go out on a downer. He wants to win. Plus, I think he is confident that Abbott and Sayler are going to get the new arena built and that will give his recruiting efforts a huge boost.
His limited bench play, and the favored match-up zone, have taken a toll on me over the years. But maybe he can recruit more than 7 people who can can play and maybe enough athleticism and discipline to be effective with the zone.
At any rate, Boots has earned enough credibility with me to give him a chance to turn the program around one more time.

A 6'8" Spark will be a nice addition in the front court as well. The increased height should dramatically improve rebounding, which has been our main plight so far this season.

I saw the Gonzaga game on TV. I was impressed with the Yotes. I don't know the league well enough to predict how the Coyotes will fare this year, but I do think this team will be much better than last year. First off, Gonzaga is a big, athletic team, so the rebounding and the play of our big men were no match. Statically you can see the results, however, Gruis did make some good moves, however he missed a few make able layups. Flack had a few blocked shots and battled well considering the mismatch. Rowson struggled in this game for the same reason, however, he seems very athletic and it looks like he did well in the other games in which the talent level wasn't so different. I think he will be solid against Summit League competition. Kasperbauer hit some threes, some long ones, and most impressively didn't seem fazed by the environment or by his age. I was impressed by how the Coyotes played tough in the early part of the game, especially since this was the fourth game in 5 days. I'm not sure if we have any prolific scores like Krogman and Westbrook, but I do know we have a handful that should be able to put up double digits on any given night (Gruis, Kasperbauer, Flack, Rowson, Tecker, Myles). Looking forward to 11/29/12 Summit League tip off!
