CBS Sports is reporting this afternoon that Denver will be joining the Summit League next year. It is early, but I think I like it---seems like a good school in an excellent market for us (easy air travel). Not too familiar with Denver's situation--what are the advantages related to joining the Summit?

I think this is a good get. Denver moved from the Sunbelt where they didn't fit in geographically and because they don't have football to the WAC this year. The WAC is now in its final stages of existence with only Seattle and New Mexico State on board for the future as well as Cal Bakersfield and Utah Valley who are supposed to join next year. so Denver was looking for a more stable setting. SDSU played them regularly the first few years we were DI. Most recent years they would have been a little above the middle in the Summit I think.

Denver would seem like a geographical fit for the Big Sky, too...I wonder what the differences for Denver were between the Big Sky and the Summit (I am assuming the Big Sky would be interested, too)?

Well we now have our Northern Colorado of the Summit to join UNO. It is amazing how the NCC seems to be recreating itself in similar ways. I am happy to have Denver join the league and get back to a even 10 again. I don't think the Summit should stop looking though. With these days and times I wouldn't mind going to 12 teams. This is another indication that the Summit wants to build around the Dakota's and if they have to go west they will. Lets bring UND back onboard as well.

Denver doesn't have football, which I think the Big Sky would want. So I think that gave the Summit an advantage.

With Denver apparently in I would like to see Northern Colorado and North Dakota follow. That would put a nice bow on the conference but give it more stability in case the eastern schools start to bolt which is probably getting to be more and more a possibility. If UNC is to come to the Summit which I think is possible, UND would probably be added at the same time. I would actually like a 12 team full round robin basketball conference. Scheduling good non conference home games even with a 10 team conference seems hard to do in basketball without traveling all over the country to try to get teams to return the favor. Of course if this was to happen the MVFC would almost be forced to go to 12 schools and split into divisions. UNC-UND-NDSU-SDSU-USD-UNI & WIU-ISUr-ILSt-SIU-MOSt-YSU
Travel partners could easily break down as such
UNC-Denver UND-NDSU USD-SDSU UNO-UMKC WIU-IUPUI IPFW-Oakland That just makes too much sense. If Oakland or any other eastern teams leave it would give some more flexibility going forward. I would say a conference such as this could at least give the eastern schools some reason to stay and some reason to feel more stable. It would make the Summit Tourney a little more than practically an automatic birth. The bottom 4 would be out.

You can build a solid argument that UND and UNC in many ways are in better position than USD is. The Big Sky is an all sports league, and appears to be safe. At the time we chose conference affiliation the only fly in the ointment was it looked like it was possible Montana was heading to another league. I believe it was the WAC. Had that happened, it might have destabilized the Big Sky. But it didn't happen, so I would say as of now UNC and UND are in a more secure all sports position than we are.
The football leagues are similar. My one hope is that in time USD along with the other Dakota schools may someday have an opportunity to make it an All Sports league. Then, and only then will we be stable.

What will make it stable is schools not jumping up a level causing all of this and having the bigger conferences make it about the athletes and not themselves.
One school the summit should look at is northern Kentucky, which mad the jump up. Don't know if they found a conference but could be a fit.
The problem with und is that the mvfc wants nothing to do with them right now and I don't blame them. Give it a year to have some stability there first. Plus with unc, I don't think you can convince the siu and wiu to make that trip. That was their concern with usd.

DU is great. Might mean Denver tries to host the tourney after SF options are over but I would rather see that than Detroit. I see Oakland leaving soon so adding Denver is good. I don't see UNC or UND leaving anytime soon, but I wish UND was back with the other three Dakota schools. Could care less about UNC.
