Truthfully, I would like someone from the younger generation to answer this reply because I am perplexed. I have an issue with attendance of all ages, not just students. And those that attend I feel are wayyyyyy to quiet and don't "get into the game". If someone makes a 3, or a big play, there is this sort of clap clap and that's it. No passion. No yelling, no screaming. Maybe it's just the Dome, I don't know, but I have heard it raucous before, so I know it can be done.
When I played at the U, it was the football teams JOB to make sure the new armory was a hell hole, and that without doubt we always had the home court advantage. Hell for big games, the head coach would buy the football players a pre game keg to get them ready to go, and man did we take over. You couldn't hear yourself think in that gym, and it was because the football team set the pace. We were warned so many times by refs it became a joke that of we hadn't been warned at a particular gme, we hadn't done up job. There were always between 30-50 football players at the game raising hell. It makes a huge difference to the basketball team playing, especially if they are underdogs and are still in the game.
So my question to the student athletes (non basketball players), WTF is wrong with you? Is it not cool to shout and scream and support your team? Look at Duke, or Ohio State, or SDSU for crying up loud. Truthfully you suck at firing up a crowd. Those old guys sitting on the sideline make more of an effort than you do. It makes me sick. Is the administration monitoring you for behavior? Is that it? Or do you just plain not give a crap?
I guaranty that we win the Western Illinois game if there was any sort of home court advantage. Every game is big. Every single one of them. If they can defend home court, then steal 2-3 wins on the road, it sets them up for a good seed for the post season. AD given the fact the tourney is held in SF, and you get a good seed, and you happen to get hot for a few days, maybe just maybe you might make the BIG DANCE, and go play Duke, or North Carolina and say what a blast it was.
I would give all I had to be entering USD as a freshman student athlete again, and have the privilege of playing ball for the Coyotes. And I would ask the other athletes to support the football games, stay to the end, and in return, I will do the same for you, it's called CAMPUS LIFE. You are pissing away the best opportunities of having a great time.
To be frank, I am nervous as hell about spending money to build an arena when our fan support is as bad as it is, and the student support is pathetic. It would be nice for me, but that's a lot of money if we have no intention of filling it or even coming close to filling it.
I'm at loss of words for what it is going to take people to understand what a great deal we have, and attend games. I just can't get over it.
