ya this year is a little odd. It all comes down to what is best for this program moving forward and i feel that boots has recruited the players necessary to be competitive but he has not adjusted himself or his game plan accordingly. Its frustrating watching a team that is a few minor adjustments away from being a mid to upper summit team play under their potential.

Magic is also one of the worst commentators in the NBA, but I do agree, DA is a bad fit for the Lakers, but there was not a coach that could fit the Lakers because Magic doesn't want to throw Kobe and Dwight under the bus, so a big grain of salt there. I agree, Boots agrees to let the zone go, but it has been his bread and butter for 20 years and if the players didn't know that when they committed their, well, then they really didn't do their homework. Wow....I am shocked you look at it that way. I look at it that Boots recruited talent he thought could compete in the summit league. I thought Boots was paid (a little to handsomely I might add) to win games and build a successfully program for USD. He recruited this class and I am not positive, but do not think he told the players that he was going to stubbornly play a zone defense at the div 1 level till he runs the program in the ground. Boots is abusing his players by being unwilling to try any thing different, and I am positive that is not what they signed up for. I would dare to bet he promised them all a chance at the ncaa tournament, and I encourage any one reading this to explain to me how that will happen playing ONLY a zone defense game in and game out. There is a place for a zone defense in div 1 but it is very limited. I find it very interesting that coach Boots is allowed to continue this experiment for this long at the players and programs expense. This is just my opinion and I am not a college level coach, but I read this blog everyday hoping someone will explain why he does this and all I read is that it worked at a previous level. I guess all I can say to that is maybe he should be coaching at that level then. This program is at the div 1 level and that is what the donors(and players for that matter) expect.

It seems a little premature at this point to judge the team too harshly. If we keep the status quo, I might agree at the end of the year. For me, everything nearly immaterial until after the Summit Tourney.

For me, everything nearly immaterial until after the Summit Tourney. I agree, a little too early to declare the outcome of this season. Although I have respect for what Dave Boots has done in the past I know he is expected to have an upper echelon Summit League program. The fans have the right to certain expectations but more importantly the University Administration/AD, know they have to put forth a respectable program or all the dollars committed to scholarships and facilities become a farce. The Dave Boots' era clock is ticking......

I think when you compare Boots' salary to many coaches at the same level, I don't think he is just making some crazy lump sum, especially when he is also an assistant AD still if I am correct and has been at the University as long as he has. Seriously, if the kids did not know he was going to run the zone, that is one them. That's like joining Syracuse and being like "wait, they run the zone here?" or going to Georgia Tech for football and wondering why they aren't a pass-first team. They had to know he was going to run the zone 80 percent of the time, honestly. I agree, I think this is a pretty good class that was recruited, though. I am not a big fan of the zone at this level, but if the kids are frustrated with it, well, that's a whole different thing because they knew Boots was going to run it until he retires.
