While I picked NDSU to win this game, I did not think it would be like this. The Bison are just dismantling USD for whatever reason. This USD team is just so inconsistent and NDSU shot 80 percent from the field in the first half? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The SDSU game in Brookings was a joke last year and this is at home and even a bigger kick in the pants. Unacceptable.

And 64% for the game. No way to beat a team that is that hot.

And 64% for the game. No way to beat a team that is that hot. Why do you think they shot such a high percentage? Do you thing it was just pure luck? They have the highest shooting percentage in the summit league if I am not mistaken. Marshall Bjorklund scored his career high against USD. Look up stats on opposing teams shooting percentage against USD, they all have record setting games against USD. NDSU had a good percentage coming in, so its only natural it is going to be better than their season average against us. Do you think Bjorklund was always that good? He has been coached to what he is today. Saul Phillips has developed him into what he is over time and now uses him to build a team around. Do you see other post players standing out on the three point line setting screens, USD does. Bjorklund is under the basket while his teammate all clear out so their can be no help defense, than makes a one one move at close range to score a high percentage shot. I had the opportunity to visit a few minutes with one of the NDSU coaches after the game. He made a remark something to the effect that they almost have a hard time not laughing when watching USD tape to prepare for the game. Asked me if i noticed three defenders standing along the lane every time one of our guards would try to drive to the rack? He said they knew Boots does not go inside the paint except on a drive. It was easy for them to take that part of the game away. Boots does not want to use his bigs underneath, so that leaves the three pointer left for offense. So in order for coach Boots to beat us, his team would have to shoot a unreal three point shooting percentage. The odds were overwhelming for NDSU. If USD fans cant see we are being so out coached, you are blind. The last two games in particular, it is very obvious. Did any one notice Saul Phillips coaching his bench players all night. He had all of there attention and they were looking to him for guidance the whole while he was talking to them. You could see the respect they gave him. Weber for Kansas was the same way. You could see the respect from his players. Weber had a plan at the beginning of the game designed just for USD, not a generic style that he used fifteen years in a row at the d-2 level. It was remarked in a earlier post that if these players did not Know Boots was going to play zone the whole time, it was there own fault. I think the players that committed to him thought he would be willing to do what it takes to be competitive, and that my friends is definitely not the case. After last nights performance am done donating to USD. I will not give another dime until the heat is put on Boots to change this thing around. Until I can see that he is willing to try to do what ever it takes to make this program move forward I'm done. If I do not see any change soon, I am also to the point were I may start suggesting to my fellow donors to close there checkbooks also.

I think if you see the way that Illinois is playing that Bruce Weber is not that great of a coach. USD cut that game within 5 points. Maybe Illinois needed a change, but he lost control of his team last year without a doubt.
In terms of what the NDSU coaches said, if true, that is an absolutely huge program and if NDSU coaches are laughing at the USD tape, you know they are not the only Summit League doing that.
Boots needs to kick it into gear with a consistent defense and a consistent team.
I do have to say, it is tough to stop 64 percent shooting and Bjorklund was just as hot as could be coming into this game. Jeez this team is good.

No offense but that sounds fishy on the surface--a NDSU coach spontaneously tells a random stranger who is also a USD booster that they are laughing at the USD tape. That is either a)unprofessional, b) misinterpreted, or c) fiction. Gotta be more to the story than that.

With the way that NDSU has rolled USD in two of the last three games, is it really that unbelievable though? 80 percent shooting in one half is pretty laughable for a defense. If USD did not get crushed the way they did, I wouldn't believe it. But considering Saul Phillips is rolling USD, I can see that happening.

Do you think all USD boosters only have connections with USD? Did anyone say they were laughing? He said they had a hard time not laughing. I have had the opportunity to have dinner with Saul before as well as visiting with him on several occasions. I did not get to talk to him last night but did talk to one of his assistant's. What would you want him to say, you guys played one heck of a game? He also stated that we had some pretty decent talent on our team, but he felt we were not using it correctly. He also said that it would be hard to build a team out of so many different transfers. But this is not the first time comments like this have been said about USD. It is time the boosters get there head out of the sand and face the facts. We are trying to run with the big dogs now. We can either make everybody in the basketball program accountable for there job, and perform, or get run over and left in the dust to blow away. Donating money to USD is a investment in the future of USD. I do not see the ship being run tight enough to be considered a good investment at this time!!!

Sorry Chuck, but I just have to add another thought about your comment. Your attitude is the whole problem. Nobody wants to see what is happening to the program. Rather than being upset with the way the program is being run, and demand better because we know it can be, sweep it under the rug till it goes away. If you are so naive to think that other programs are not talking about us that way, and cannot see what is happening to this program, I need you as an investor in some projects I have going. I love to play with someone else's money that does not care about the success or failure of it.

Last night was totally embarrassing and unacceptable. Littleyote's feelings about where the program is today, and investing in it into the future unfortunately is where a lot of fans are today. And fans have every right to express their concerns, be heard, and then if they feel that they aren't being heard, have every right to not support the program. That's a sad state of affairs, but nonetheless where we are at today.
I am trying to be objective throughout this whole year, and basketball isn't my true passion, but I do like it enough to buy tickets and come to games from a much further distance than the majority of those there. My take on this whole thing is the CHICKEN OR THE EGG syndrome.
What I mean by that is the DakotaDome is an awful venture to watch any sport ( other than football or track ). Just awful. The environment is sterile, crowds play no factor in the outcome of the game. At least the New Armory, as small and antiquated as it was, gave the home team a huge advantage. That is no longer the case. So I guess what I am saying is that I do personally believe a new arena will spark some interest in the program, give the fans something to be proud of, and bring back some resemblance of what a basketball arena should look like. Then I think to myself, why on Gods green earth would we build a new 6000 seat arena, when we barely get 1000 people to a game now? And I guess my answer is faith. I have faith that sports at USD can, and will be competitive, but it can't be like it was in the 70's, 80's, and so on. It has to have a business like approach, and if that part of your business is not doing well, then changes have to be made.
Lilyote reflects how many people feel right now, maybe even myself to some degree. But I love this place enough, that my feelings are it can compete, and can be resurrected to the point where not only people would come back for games, and get involved, but then they to would invest in the future. There are a number of us that have sports connections way past USD, so I totally believe that discussion very well could have taken place. Again, I am not a basketball guy, but last night was the pits.
One thing I am tired of is the pouting that goes on. To me, that is totally unacceptable behavior. We need to get back to the point where the name on the front of the jersey is far more important than the name on the back.
We need strong leadership right now.

I love to play with someone else's money that does not care about the success or failure of it. Thanks for your comments, littleyote. As I said, there had to be more the story than I originally (mis)read—you have strong prior connections to NDSU. Obviously I disagree that my attitude is the whole problem, as I regularly support the Yotes and recognize that transitioning to D1 is a process. Last night sucked, no doubt, and nobody should be happy with it. It is the right thing to do to question how things are going when things aren’t where we want to be. Do you think there was some questioning in Jackrabbit country of Scott Nagy’s staff and their approach during their transition? 2004-2005: 10-18 2005-2006: 9-20 2006-2007: 6-24! 2007-2008: 8-31 2008-2009:13-20 2009-2010: 14-16 We haven’t had a run of six years even close to that. Let's also keep in mind that Saul "The Great" Phillips hasn't been over .500 in the Summit for three years. No one is happy, but let’s be realistic about the transition. We should question and adjust, but we shouldn’t overcorrect either. We will have many strong returning players next year as a foundation (Bos, Flack, Kasperbauer, Gruis, Rowson, etc) and some good looking D1 transfers ready to join us next year. That is a pretty good foundation for the program, and a situation I am looking forward to seeing develop as we grow into a new arena. It is not a situation that I think I should undercut by withholding support. One night of hot shooting by NDSU and an unprofessional comment by an assistant coach isn’t really changing that for me. We could easily be 3-1 in the Summit rather than 2-2. During the transition we have beaten NCAA tournament teams, and we will continue to do so. That’s really all I have to say on the topic, and don’t plan to turn this into a pissing match thread discussion. I join you, littleyote, in being passionate about USD athletics and planning to see things improve. We have a different opinion but the same intended outcome.

Just because SDSU had a struggling start to d-1 is all the more reason to not let it happen to us. I have always been under the impression that we wanted to be better than SDSU, and I think we are. I also think that we are losing that edge by not being willing to adjust. You mention not overcorrecting, we first have to make a correction, and I have not seen that.
USD coaches have made the comment about next year being better every year since the transition started. I have heard the same comment from them a couple of times this year for next. I guess I just do not understand why not this year. I feel that the players that have committed to this program deserve a better effort from the coaching staff to make this year a success, than see how next year plays out. Success breeds success!
I do not want to offend any one that post on this board, as I enjoy seeing other peoples opinions. And like you, I do not want a trivial pissing match, but I feel this kind of discussion needs to take place to get all that are involved in making USD a success, think and move forward.

littleyote, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts after the win over SDSU today. Will you and your friends continue to keep your pocket-books open now? As you said, success breeds success, contemplating pulling your support after one bad night against NDSU now seems to be a little premature. Have there been other bad nights, yes, but that's part of this process. We're getting there. Also, keep in mind that your contributions to USD athletics benefit more folks than just Coach Boots and his student athletes.

It was good to see that kind of a effort by all involved to make it happen. I am wondering why in the last two years that we have seen this effort in only about 2% of the games? I am also wondering why you think the reason for closing (or opening) my checkbook would be based on one game? Division 1 athletics is a business (big business at that) and can play a huge roll in the success or failure of a college. It would be my sincere hope that prospective students would not base there college choice on a schools ability to be competitive in athletics, but if you think it is not a factor in there decision, you are wrong. The more success in athletics, the more press, the more press, the more bragging by alumni, more bragging, more people wanting to be involved with USD which is another way to draw more students. I hope you are catching my drift, ITS BIG BUSINESS!!!! I do not base business decisions on one game, but look at the "odds" or the trends. I think it is obvious what USD men's basketball trend has been looking like lately. Why only base it on Men's basketball? Because the industry trend has been to put money behind football and men's basketball. Do I think that that is fair? No I do not, but follow the money and see were it takes you. I chose to put my money in an investment that looks at the future, not the past. Boots has been successful in d-2, does that mean he will be successful at this level? The odds would indicate that he should be, but the trend lately has shown otherwise. Boots has 20 plus years of experience in this business, does that mean he should not have the benefit of the doubt when proving himself, absolutely not, but it also means he should know what it takes to win by now and we expect more from a seasoned leader.

Your question: "I am also wondering why you think the reason for closing (or opening) my checkbook would be based on one game?"
My answer (these are your words, not mine): "After last nights performance am done donating to USD."
Seems to me Coach Boots has a pretty good idea as to what it takes to win and build a successful basketball program. Winning 500 games for this program is certainly a testament to that fact. Take a deep breath, take a step back, keep your check book (and your mind) open and enjoy the rest of the season. It's going to be a fun one!
