So venturing around the web I am reading all sorts of stuff how the Summit is imploding. Rumors that NDSU and SDSU are going to the Valley. OK. OK. After I got done laughing at that rumor I would like to remind people that SDSU and USD are firmly attached at the hip as a package. Remember when we had that Big Sky invite and we were pulled back into the Summit by the BoR because that move would hurt State and destabilize the Summit? Yeah, well, you think State is going anywhere without the U after that? Didn't think so. This is an edited post…edited after reading the article in today's Kansas City Star announcing UMKC is going to the WAC and talking about the speculation on NDSU and SDSU going to the Missouri Valley Conference. www.kansascity.com/2013/02/07/4054339/umkc-to-join-western-athletic.htmlThe original version of the speculation going around had all three Dakota schools in the Summit going to the MVC. That rumor appears to have been started by a Kansas City radio guy. I take issue with is the assertion that USD and SDSU are "joined at the hip". The suggestion that USD was pulled into the Summit by the BoR is unadulterated cow manure. Same comments in response to the suggestion that SDSU cannot move without USD. And, Yote53, I'll match my sources against yours any day. But, the bottom line: the story in circulation about some Dakota schools, whether SDSU and NDSU without USD or SDSU, NDSU AND USD, leaving the Summit does not have any substance in fact that anyone can cite. That doesn't mean that such things won't happen but for now, it’s just speculation. Of course, one has to concede that the crazy factor in all of this is tomorrow everything could change. [If I was asked for my opinion on whether a school should leave the Summit if it received an invite to the MVC, I'd quickly respond "Yes". And if asked for my opinion on which Summit schools seems better positioned to get such an invite, my opinion would be: if one school, USD based on location and profile; if two schools, USD and SDSU based on location and profiles; if three schools, USD, SDSU and NDSU.]

I do not believe USD are tied at the hip, but neither are SDSU and NDSU as many seem to think.

It should go without saying, but everything I post is either opinion, speculation or facts that I have read from real experts. I have no inside information.
I am just an Alum, a Fan(atic), and a self-described athlete.
That being said, here's some more opinion: 1) FB should drive conference affiliation decisions. 2) We're in one of the best, if not the best FCS FB conferences. 3) The Dakota teams have established themselves to be a good anchor for the conference(s). (Yes, NDSU and SDSU, but USD is coming and coming FAST!) 4) Take the MVFC and build from there: a) Offer to merge with MVC (all sports) BB would be kind of big, maybe 2 divisions ?? b) OR re-name the conference and go add schools (especially BB only schools; particularly those already in Summit)
You would have one conference, and the liklihood that it would be a solid FB and BB conference, provided you can add the BB schools from old Summit or maybe pick off some MVC schools.
One last thing, we need to add UND Fighting Sioux, let the PC cry all they want.

Catholic 7 take 4 from A-10 and 1 from MVC A-10 take 4 from Horizon Horizon takes 4 from Summit (oak, iupui, ipfw and wiu) MVC takes 3 from Summit (usd, sdsu, ndsu) WAC takes omaha and denver. Pretty simple. 9 in MVFC; 12 in MVC. If a school moves up to FBS we just call UNC or UND to take their place. disclaimer: don't take the above seriously. I was just having fun.

Not too bad though, seems sensible. As far as conference realignment is sensible.

I’ve never been sold on the concept of "joined at the hip" and "package deal," both in the context of USD and SDSU and SDSU and NDSU. There is, I suppose, some sentimental allegiance between the XDSUs by virtue of their D-I transition timing. But both schools, I am confident, will weigh their options, whatever they may be, autonomously. And USD will do the same. It is, of course, an obvious preference of our fans to maintain a rivalry with SDSU. While only stubbornly delusional SDSU fans maintain that the Jackrabbit faithful don’t care anymore about USD, to their credit, the SDSU fan base has evolved to also appreciate the greater fruits of D-I basketball. Our fans, coming out of the transitional haze, will ultimately find similar clarity. Bank on that. At the end of the day, we have a new arena coming, a proud tradition and our geographic positioning is extremely favorable. I think we’ll be alright.
