I think the time to start talking about the Summit League Tourney is now. Everyone please share your thoughts about this tourney. This really is unchartered territory. The Men and Women will be 3 games from making the NCAA tourney in about a week and a half. I am going to say that again. 3 Hard Fought games from the NCAA tournament, WOW.
When looking towards this event there are two things that come to mind from a fans perspective. My hope of what doesn't happen is kind of where we have been lately with wallowing home attendance. Will that carry over, I don't know.
I am going to take the optimistic approach and hope the following will be what happens. When people slam Coyote attendance (and that is often deserved) I always like to point to one thing and that is as follows.
In 2008 when we were still in D2 and the NCC was in dying mode USD fans came out to show that they are in the woodwork and do come out from time to time. On a Thursday night in 2008 I was watching the USD Women play Delta State who I believe was the #1 ranked team in the country at the time. They were an athletic team every bit as good as a D1 team at that time. The Delta game was one that it appeared the Coyotes were outmatched in and would probably result in USD's season ending game. Well the Yotes pulled off the game and I turned to my wife and said, do you realise that we are going to be playing for the National Title. After a little bit of thought we gassed up on the car and headed to Kearney Nebraska for the title game. I was so impressed and had chills running up and down my spine in the ticket line with all the Coyote fans that were packing the lobby of the UNK arena.
It was a complete home court advantage like I have never seen 5 hours away from Vermillion. For those that were there know exactly what I am talking about. It was the most OUTSTANDING fan support I have ever seen from the Coyote fan base that didn't involved a game against SDSU. I was so proud that day.
Can we get lightning to strike twice in a two year span. I think we can and think we need to make it happen. I shamefully have not been to a game this season, so I have plenty to give as far as fan support.
Both the men and women thrive off of fan support. Both programs have said so themselves. The Coyote Bandwagon has been kind of trudging along lately but I think it's fair to say that the wagon will be making a huge increase in it's speed. I have been lucky enough to throw my rope onto it before it became very difficult to do so.
If you are waiting for single session passes I would double think that notion. Get your tourney pass now so you dont have to stand in line and risk missing what will be a great wave of excitement. The Coyotes can with the proper support make a run towards the NCAA tourney. I want to see it happen live when it does, whether this year or some year down the line.
As a reader how are you viewing this tourney from a USD standpoint?
