J. Hoeck's FB update: pressdakotan.wordpress.com/Looks like a number of underclassmen will get the call early this year with at least 5 probable starters out with injuries.

Per Mick Garry:
USD fr. RB Khorey Kilgore was thought to be out for season with a torn up knee. Not so. Could play within a month. Was having a good camp.

That is not saying much since his last AL blog update was Aug 12th....

Looking thru the 'Participation' reports for the first two games it appears the following true freshmen have played so far:
Tevin Foster DB Miles Bergner K/P Ryan Alger S John Wessel LB Jet Moreland LB Drew Potter FB Colin Mertlik LB Jon Maag DL
Could have missed someone but I think this is correct. Not sure of any conclusions that can be drawn, ie, lack of depth, etc. but these young guys are getting some valuable experience. Counted 16 seniors on the roster.

To me, what makes it even more intriguing is that all but 2 are on the defensive side of the ball, and that is the area that has been impressive this year. I don't blame the punter for our woes, to me it's the long snapper, and Potter is going to be good, but 6 freshman playing on the D and making an impact. A solid D will keep us in games against MVC opponents. Thanks for that post. Interesting

Our 2nd or 3rd Defensive series against KU we had 4 true freshmen on the field at one time. Wessel at ILB Maag at DT Mertlik at OLB and Foster at CB.

I believe the team is being built to have a defensive mentality first .

Thanks obc, the roster breakdown by classes is quite revealing, but also encouraging. You can jump start a rebuilding program with JC kids but you really need to fill the trenches with deep recruiting classes. And, that is not a knock on JC transfers, we need them (as virtually all FB programs do) and many have contributed greatly over the years.
