LOL.
The (not) April Fool's Day joke is that the MVC is going to visit UMKC. Yeah, that UMKC. The one that is so bad the Summit celebrated them leaving our conference to go to the WAC. Yeah, I don't understand it either.

All fooling aside, it appears the future of the MVFC means nothing to the MVC.

Why should it? Not like the shifting of the football conferences really took into consideration the basketball part of it. When the Big 12 was in trouble, no one wanted Kansas, which has a storied basketball program.

I was getting excited! AHH! Were fine where we are...for now. We need baseball though. NEED IT! Put it in the new facility plan. A new baseball facility and get it. COME ON!

USD doesn't "need" baseball. That would be so far down the road on a priority list; first let's get up a new arena, then an outdoor track with a soccer field, then focus on coaching salaries and working with regents on contracts. Prentis park has seen some pretty sweet upgrades over the years, but baseball becoming a Division One reality is pretty far off

So what women's sport gets created if baseball is brought back? Where is the money going to come from? Where are the fans going to come from, cause lord knows they don't show up for football and basketball.

I say Women's sports possible are rowing, lacrosse, maybe syncro swimming, or field hockey. Lot's of schools play that and they are very competitive. You could also add sand volleyball like Nebraska does. I definitely think it should be a last priority. But USD needs to have a bigger variety of sports.

All this talk of adding sports is so far off I hesitiate to discuss the subject. We need to concentrate on our current sports offerings and raising them to championship caliber levels. That said, considering on April 1 I woke up to Vermillion blanketed in snow I'm not so sure we should ever consider adding baseball again. I love the sport, it's just that northern schools have a very hard time competing on a national stage with the southern schools. I guess you could say I'm crazy but I would think an ultimate goal of the program would be to get to the College World Series. It's not that crazy as smaller schools have made that tournament. If I remember correctly Creighton made it one year. I can tell you from experience this past weekend, spring weather is very different between Omaha and Vermillion. Sunday I was down in Nebraska and stopped in Omaha, it was sunny and nice outside. By the time I arrived in Vermillion it was cold and snowing.
Personally, I think South Dakota would experience more success with either hockey or lacrosse. Both sports are experiencing nationwide growth at the youth levels. Lacrosse is absolutely exploding in the Twin Cities area and in other areas across the country. There is more young hockey talent looking for places to play than there are spots on college teams. Alot of "careers" are ending very early. It is also becoming more and more popular across South Dakota with every major city in the state fielding youth programs and high school teams, Vermillion being the largest town to not do so.
Isn't the ultimate goal of college atheltics to give our youth opportunities?

If the players are talented enough, there are plenty of hockey teams in the nation for a spot on that team and enough spots on USHL and junior hockey teams, honestly. I agreed completely on baseball, but hockey is an even bigger pipe dream, especially in Vermillion. People don't even show up for football and basketball, so until they do, why the heck would USD add more sports with such a hesitant fan base.

You do realize that junior hockey (USHL, NAHL, EJHL, etc) is the stepping stone to college hockey not a destination or even equivalent to college. Very, very few players go straight from high school to college, maybe a handful a year. Most of juniors is made up of 16-18 yr olds trying to land a college scholarship. There isn't near enough college hockey programs for the amount of talented players out there. Many very talented players are ending up on D3 rosters. In fact, if a player wants to even get a spot at a non-scholarship D3 school or even a high level club team they have to go the juniors route. It's not like USD were anybody can go out for the club team (USD can barely field a club team, which is sad). It's jacked up. There isn't near enough opportunity for the amount of players out there. I agree that USD is in no position to be adding anything. I was just speaking hypothetically about what sports are trending and what would work at a northern school like USD. I don't think baseball is a sport that should be sponsored given our climate.
