Jacks lost 4-3 in 13 innings today (Saturday) to the Dons of San Francisco to end their NCAA tourney hopes. Surprisingly good showing, especially against Oregon. Definitely gave all they had.

I know some want baseball back in the worst way but I am not in favor of any program being considered as a new sport at USD that has to rely on good spring weather to even get in home games. The Jacks could hardly play a home game all year. Not only is the weather a factor for baseball but the midwest/northern teams typically have a disadvantage to the south and west when it comes to putting together a competitive national program. Not only should baseball not be brought back it shouldn't be brought back. It's expensive but hockey would make more sense. There are no hockey programs north of Omaha and south of Grand Forks. USD could develop a little bit of a niche for hockey and do something that would seperate themselves from SDSU a bit instead of always trying to get nearer to them. Let the Jacks worry about the issues with an extreme nothern baseball program. Of course things would be contingent on the new arena's ability to host hockey. We have 2 tier 1 junior programs, one 35 miles to the southeast and another 60 miles to the north. There are alot of hockey fans in the area and some that might not mind following their alumni to some college games. College hockey is awsome and USD could be the only ticket in town if they wanted to be. I guess I slightly hi-jacked the baseball thread so sorry about that. Yeah hockey would be a really bad idea. Hockey in S.D. is really subpar and they can try and and steal from others, but will be very hard to steal from the UND and UNO base. Plus the expense far outweigh what USD would make with hockey. The cost to even get the stadium would be huge and would enough fans show up? Plus the amount of scholarships it would take would make it a Title IX problem, big time. Yes, the answer is to start women's hockey, but where are the players for that? Would be a lot easier to start women's lacrosse for the next sport, actually, instead of men's hockey. Plus trapshooting, men and women and also women's bowling.

1. There are more than enough hockey players available to fill out a D1 roster. Do you think those recruits are coming from SD? Heck, we don't even get our FOOTBALL recruits from SD anymore. The players would be coming from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc. all via the USHL.
2. Women's hockey has exploded at the youth and high school level. There won't be enough opportunities for these ladies to further their careers after high school. Same as the boys, there is a lack of opportunity in the sport. D3 roster spots are coveted and fought for with the same vigor as D1 spots. Nowadays you have no shot of even going D3 if you haven't played juniors.
3. Title IX would be an issue. The money is not there.
4. The new arena could be made as a sual purpose facility with ice making capabilities.
5. And this is the best one. I actually had somebody of note at the university agree with me on this point. USD men's hockey would outdraw USD mens' basketball. It's the truth. That's also a problem. You can't have hockey outdrawing basketball at this school. If you think I'm wrong look up the attendance numbers for USD basketball the last few years. It wouldn't be hard to top those figures.

I think UND outdraws men's bball there. After that, I don't know. Probably Maine as well. I just don't see the fan base or the ability of Vermillion to draw hockey players. I don't know, I think the fan base should be more supportive of basketball and football before second-tier sports are created. Until USD can get fans at the sports it has now, how would it be smart to create new sports that the fans still wouldn't go to?

Until USD can get fans at the sports it has now, how would it be smart to create new sports that the fans still wouldn't go to? USD is in no position to be adding any sports. I think the debate I am drawing here is if a sport was added should it be baseball. Coyote Fan said it should be hockey. I tend to agree with him that if USD wanted to add a sport that they could compete on a national stage with that hockey would be the ideal sport. What I think you don't understand is that hockey is different from the fan draw perspective. You'll draw the Coyote fans who support USD but you will also draw lots of people from the area who love the sport and would love to see a D1 program in their backyard. I know people from a ways away that have told me if USD had a D1 hockey program they would have season tickets, and these people have no affilition to USD whatsoever. Now, I know that is anecdotal but I look at what happened in Omaha, Bemidji, St Coud and Mankato (Mankato is not really hockey country even if it is in Minnesota, it's in southern MN, where according to anybody from the metro or the north, hockey doesn't exist). I watch a lot of college games and the stands are full. Most programs aren't like UND, Minnesota, or Denver. Those are like the BCS of college hockey. Most programs are like RPI, Merrimac, Mercyhurst, Quinnipiac, Union, or St Lawrence. Quinnipiac was in the National Title game and drew between 2,500 and 3,000 per game. UND draws about 10,000. I think 2,500 to 3,000 is more than attainable for Vermillion, SD. I could envision drawing 5,000 regularly once everything is established. I am saying that it would draw well at USD. Better than basketball IMO. Basketball is everywhere around here. There is SDSU at D1. Lots of NAIA and D2 schools. High school basketball. USD has to compete in a saturated market where basketball fans can get there fix elsewhere. What you draw for USD basketball are USD fans. There are USHL teams in Sioux Falls and Sioux City, that's it, and that actually helps USD because you have bases in those two towns that have been educated in the sport. D1 college hockey is a step above that and everybody knows it. It would be the only game in the area.

Congrats to Jacks, good to see South Dakota represented on ESPN, would look a lot better in RED! It looks like red will have to represent South Dakota this week/end. I don't know about the other events but USD's pole vaulting is tough. The Jacks had their chances. If the breaks would have went their way they could have won both games but it could have been worse if the breaks went for the other teams(just like most sporting events).
