For Coyotes who follow Summit baseball: the league tourney championship game starts at about 2:00 between SDSU and NDSU. Since it's double elimination, NDSU had/has to win one game while SDSU has to beat the Bison twice. SDSU just won the first game 2-0.
910 am radio is carrying the game with Tyler Merriam calling the play-by-play. He's a very good baseball announcer. The 910 signal is not real strong...about 60 miles outside of Brookings seems to be the max.
I know its been discussed on this board before but I wish USD could add baseball. USD, historically, was a good baseball school and those traditions can be resumed.

Which men's program would you cut to meet the Title IX requirements?

SDSU held on to win the second game 1-0. Very good baseball game.
#1Fan: I don't have a good answer to your question. I just remember back in the day when the 'Yotes were one of those schools that was always competitive in baseball...so, just wishful thinking on my part. Certainly Vermillion weather was a factor and was a significant advantage over Brookings, Fargo, Grand Forks and even Minneapolis. I have wondered -- no scientific evidence of this -- whether some of the degrees offered by USD were a little more attractive to guys who were baseball players. Does that make sense? Compare: SDSU attracts more people who are good at rodeo than USD (before anyone makes some wisecracks, USD does have students who participate in rodeo).
I can see where adding a men's sports would be very expensive because you'd have to balance it on the women's side of the sports ledger. Eons ago I watched some good teams at Prentis Park.

Except Prentis is not a D-I facilty. In fact, Riverside in Yankton is better than Prentis, honestly. There would have to be MAJOR upgrades to Prentis for this even to be considered.

There are some good facilities in Sioux City, too. But, as you noted, the problem is more making it fit financially than facilities. It's hard to imagine any schools adding sports these days.

UNI & Iowa State have both dropped baseball in recent years due primarily to $$$. Expensive sport, especially for schools in the northern tier of states. I don't know the actual number, but SDSU had very few home games this year.

Well, congratulations to SDSU for winning the tourney. Beating your rival twice in a row for the conference title is no small feat.
I did not realize just how sad of a state Summit League baseball was in. State was the only team with a winning record in the tournament, and they finished 5 games behind regular season champion Omaha (who is ineligible for the conference tournament). I'm sure we could add Women's Bowling, throw up some more bleachers at Prentis, and field a baseball team that would be competitive in conference play.

The northern schools traditionally have poor overall records due to the early southern trips they have to take. And, in a year like this one, many teams have to move the home games.
I recall some top-notch USD baseball teams that had poor records because of the southern road swings in the spring. The records said nothing about those teams overall and only showed what year-round practice opportunities can do for baseball. As the warmer weather moved north, the good northern teams improved and if they had a rematch with their southern competition, there would often be different results.
SDSU's first round in the tourney is at Oregon. Oregon is ranked #8 in the country.

According to the Board of Regents report for FY12, SDSU spent $458,000 on baseball and $365,000 on wrestling. To balance this for Title 9 they apparently have equestrian at a cost of $958,000. Not sure if the calculations represents the "all in" numbers for each of these sports but not worth it in my estimation.

Agreed, even though wrestling would be a sport that could thrive more at USD than baseball with the amount of wrestling talent there is in the area. Just gotta bring in the right coach, which is a LOT harder than it sounds. Just ask SDSU, which is now finding success with a great coach.

Not sure that it makes much difference now but I think SDSU was in pretty good Title IX compliance prior to the move to DI and when Equestrian was added, the primary reason was the increase in football scholarships although I suspect it helped balance some increases in other sports too.

Title IX has outlived its usefulness. Women's athletics are here and here to stay. There are more than adequate opportunites for women in athletics today. Today Title IX is not advancing women's opportunities it is limiting men's opportunities. I am waiting for the day a men's wrestler, gymnast, or baseball player sues because of what Title IX has done to these sports.
