Greetings from St. Bonaventure!
For anyone interested, just letting you know that the Bonnies home games are all streamed for free by the University. Just go to gobonnies.com and click the video link on the game story, or navigate to the schedule and find it there. You don't need to sign up or sign in, just follow the link and click the live events tab and the South Dakota game. Stream should be live hopefully 5 minutes before tip. It's usually a pretty solid stream.
Enjoy the game, and best of luck the rest of the year!

obc, The Bonnies were projected to finish near the bottom of the A10 in nearly all major outlets. After making the tourney during the 2011-2012 season, SBU did not qualify for the A-10 Conference last season finishing at 7-9 in conference and at 14-15 overall. Even though SBU did not have that good of a year in '11-12, St. Bonaventure did knock off Temple and Saint Joe's on the road, and also beat UMass at home. The Bonnies return eight players from last year's team, but only five of those players saw decent minutes. In their exhibition last Saturday against DII Mansfield (Pa.), Bona won 102-57. Mansfield was not very good, but Bona did force 35 TO's. You can expect to see the following players to see major minutes Saturday night: C.Kloof (PG- 6'3,195), M. Wright (SG-6'4, 200), A. Cumberbatch (SG/SF-6'4, 195), M. Simmons (PF- 6'8-235), Y.Ndoye (C-7'0,245), J.Gathers (G-6'3-200), D.Wright (G/F-6'7-215) and C. Dees (PF-6'7, 260). Cumberbatch is probably the Bonnies best offensive threat followed by Matt Wright, Charlon Kloof, Simmons and then Ndoye. Don't expect the Bonnies to put up 90+ points, but rather high 70s to low 80s. There are a lot of new pieces on this Bonaventure team this year, but for what it's worth, the team believes they are more of a unit this year rather than a few players worrying about getting their points. I expect this team to win games by having a strong defensive efforts instead of outscoring teams like what was the norm the past few years. With all that said, here's a little bit of information about St. Bonaventure University. SBU is located in the small town of Olean, New York about an hour directly south of Buffalo on the PA border. Undergrad enrollment is just south of 2,000. SBU is in the Atlantic 10 Conference, and the game will be played in the Reilly Center, which seats 5,400. Over the past few years attendance has hovered around 4K, but with this being the home opener and also on a Saturday night, expect a large turnout. A quote from Joe Lunardi sums up what you can expect inside the Reilly Center for a big game. "When we say the Reilly Center is rabid, we're not doing it justice. The Bona partisans are incredibly friendly, but they know you hate being there. And they responded by making the place about as inhospitable for the opposition as you can imagine. The students are close enough to the court to touch the officials and visiting players, the sidelines are as narrow as any in Division I and the court sits below ground level with seemingly no exit in sight. The fans - young and old - blend seamlessly in an unconditional love affair with their team. They pack the place virtually regardless of record-there are no 'wine and cheese' fans. And the team never dogs it." - Joe Lunardi, ESPN.com Here are some pics of the arena, campus and student section. image2.stadiumjourney.com/images/stadiums/745_Full_Court_View_Reilly_Center.jpgcdn87.psbin.com/img/mw=800/mh=600/cr=n/d=mhgd6/j3cbp4hkaujobsol.jpggobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2012-13/photos/0009/indexgobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2012-13/photos/0009/index#PhotoSwipe1383862404636gobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2012-13/photos/0013/index#PhotoSwipe1383862512018colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/img/college-photo_1569..jpgBest of luck this year!

7-9 in the conference didn't qualify for the conference tournament? I know there are a lot of teams in the Atlantic "Ten", but wow. Rough. Nonetheless, no matter how rough of a season you expect I doubt that our Coyotes are able to take this one.

We were a 2 pt last second loss to Xavier, a two pt last second double ot loss to LaSalle, and a mind blowing melt down loss to Fordham away from being 10-6 with a first round bye. Only 12 teams (of the 16 last year) make the A"10" tourney. It was a stacked conference last year and we didnt come through. Tough after winning the tourney and not even qualifying for the next.
Having said that, we lost our top 3 scorers who averaged 14.7, 13.3 and 13.2 a game. Cumberbatch will fill one of the holes, but the others will have to be filled by guys stepping up. Defense and rebounding will be our strength as we have two 7 footers and 8 guys 6'7" or taller. But as you can imagine after losing 40+ ppg, we are really a team filled with question marks.
Keys for a South Dakota victory: -Dont leave M Wright or Cumberbatch open for 3 -Get Ndoye in foul trouble and keep him a non factor because he can spark the team both offensively and defensively -Dont let the Bonnies get out in transition off of a defensive rebound -Dont turn the ball over -Keep us off the glass, guards especially
Cumberbatch, M Wright, Kloof, Gathers, Ndoye, and Simmons can light up the scoreboard and all have in the past. Who will be those guys Saturday is a mystery.
The Bonnies will try to run run run and lock down on defense. Thats our only shot of winning this year.
And a side note, the "ranking specialists" out there have never given the Bonnies respect so those rankings means next to nnothing.
How about a little on your squad?

We have a ton of question marks heading into this season. New coach and a mix of experienced players and highly anticipated newcomers. The guys in bold are the ones I expect to get meaningful pt this year. CENTER: Gruis is a lock to start at center. He grinds and gives decent offensive production. GUARDS: Norris, a North Texas transfer, will start at point. He's a pass-first, true point. Bos will play the two spot, though he can also run the point. Bos is probably my favorite player to watch and is a legit offensive threat pulling up or driving. Kasperbauer will see minutes with Bos and Norris. He's a young shooter with great range who's reportedly improved on his ability to create. Thoseby, a Utah State transfer, will start at the three, and he's known as a sharp shooter from beyond the arc. Tyler Larson was a projected starter last year, but he blew out his knee. He's touted as a lock-down defender. We're actually pretty stacked up at the guard spots. It's tough to predict what the "true starting lineup" will look like by season's end. FORWARDS: I'd say the four spot will depend on the situation. If we want to go big, expect to see Tyler Flack, who is raw but athletic. Rowson is another guy that is effective when he plays with confidence, though he's undersized for the true four spot. Eric Robertson is expected to be another big contributor, but despite his 6'8" size, he's not a back-to-the-basket type of player. He's effective from long range. He's reportedly poised to have a breakout year. 1 Trey Norris 6-0 G SO Grand Prairie, Texas/North Texas2 Bounama Keita 6-10 C FR Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Academy 4 Rico Thompson 6-2 G FR Lawton, Okla./Stillwater HS 10 Vlad Stoicoviciu 6-5 G FR Bucharest, Romania/Cairo American College 12 Brandon Bos 6-1 G JR Markham, Ontario, Canada/Markham District HS13 Adam Thoseby 6-5 G SO Henley-on-Thames, England/Utah State14 Casey Kasperbauer 6-1 G SO Carroll, Iowa/Carroll HS21 Jack Foley 6-0 G JR Centerville, S.D./Centerville HS 23 Tyler Flack 6-7 F SO Lakeville, Minn./North HS24 Karim Rowson 6-5 G SR New York, N.Y./Western Oklahoma State32 Tavian Pomlee 6-5 G/F JR Davenport, Iowa/Iowa Western41 Eric Robertson 6-8 F SO Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata HS/IMG Academy45 Austin Sparks 6-8 F FR Denver, Colo./Fairview HS 50 Trevor Gruis 6-10 C SR Ellsworth, Minn./Ellsworth HS55 Tyler Larson 6-3 G RS JR Las Vegas, Nev./Casper CollegeI think USD is probably a bit underrated in the Summit League preseason polls. I'd say we fall just below Denver, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. Our new head coach, Joey James, was a longtime assistant of Dave Boots, who just retired after 25 seasons and more than 500 wins. If Coach James is anything like Coach Boots, I would expect to see a ton of players rotating in and out during the early non-conference slate. We'll shoot a lot of threes. Boots ran a zone defense, which was frustrating at times to witness, as we'd get murdered by second opportunities and uncontested threes. Coach James has publicly stated a wish to move toward more man-to-man, with zone looks mixed in.

Thanks for the excellent post.
Teams like South Dakota are the teams that scare me in non-conference. We were close to last in the A10 last year in 3pt fg defense. We were the best in that category 2 years ago. I hope that returns this year with our lengthy defense, but it always seems that teams come in and light us up from deep. Could be a bad night for us if your guards are hitting shots.
We have some excellent shooters as well, but they are increbily inconsistent. M Wrights career 3pt % is below .340, but when hes hot he will not miss. This years team is going to be run and gun and if they get in the open floor they will do damage. If we get stuck in a half court set, I dont think anybody knows what to expect.
Here is our version of the impact roster: PG Charlon Kloof Sr 6'3" -solid defender and rebounder. Can shoot, but rarely does. Can get to the hoop and finish strong.
SG Matt Wright Sr 6'4" -struggles in man to man coverage, excellent shooter when he's on and hes been on all preseason, will drive and dish.
SF Andell Cumberbatch Jr 6'5" -JC transfer, one of the most recuited JC, only played one game so far but looks to be our biggest most versatile offensive threat, truly can do it all.
PF Marquise Simmons Sr 6'8" -solid 4, all of his pts come from great positioning down low and put backs off rebounds, is a load down load.
C Yousouu N'doye Jr 7'0" -crowd favorite, one of the most athletic (not best skill wise) centers in the country, defensive stud, up and down on offense he can score 20 one game and 4 the next but you can be garaunteed he will have a few highlight blocks and dunks.
6th PG/SG Jordan Gathers Jr 6'3" - solid 6th man that had promising performances as a freshman especially during our postseason, dissapointed last year but can still scored from the perimeter and at the hoop
7th SF/PF Dion Wright So 6'7" -excellent rebounder, tends to rush his put backs, not much of an outside game
8th PF Chris Dees Jr 6'8" -JC transfer who appears to be a solid defender and rebounder with excellent touch around the hoop, has a decent mid range jumper.
Other than that we are a mystery. Toupane 6'7" can shoot but doesnt bring enough to the floor to be out there for extended minutes. Runs at 7'0" is hardly worth a scholarship. Our freshmen Xavier Smith is a year away atleast from contributing, and Denzel Gregg didn't play due to injury in the exhibition, but he is sort of a mystery as well. Unfortunately our best recruit Jalen Adams is red shirted due to eligibility issues.
All in all, this is more of a building year for next year. We will have a solid squad with an impressive recruiting class coming in. While many people on our board seem to think a 20 win season is about to happen, the realistic posters are expecting another .500 year filled with the same ups and downs.
Sorry for the long post.. us Bonnies love to talk basketball!

And a couple fun facts. Bonnies are 44-2 all time in home openers in the RC. 33-0 in games that are both home and season openers. Didnt know that until today.

Looks like we'll be at a size disadvantage in most situations, especially at the guard spots, which is not unusual for our guys. I neglected to mention Tavian Pomlee, a JUCO transfer expected to contribute. We've had some luck with JUCOs from Iowa Western.
While I'm hopeful our defense improves, I'm inclined to believe we'll continue to push pace and try to outgun our opponents. Sounds like we could be in for a high scoring affair.

We are a fast team that always looks to run, so high scoring it may be. Our bigs run the floor very well and our guards will shoot the pull up 3. What worries me most is your outside shooters and the fact that your best scorer is your center that will be guarded by our foul prone 7 footer.
Is gruis a back to the basket guy or all around mid range scorer?
Another thing that worries me is the new defensive rules and how our certain to be terrible refs will call them. We are a very physical team and I have a feeling these new "points of emphasis" are going to be a challenge. FYI the refs you will see tomorrow will blow your mind I'm sure. Dont worry tho, even at home the bonnies are handed some head scratching calls.
