I’m not sure how it works at South Dakota, but here at the University of Minnesota they have to post the opening for a certain amount of time. Yes, a good Athletic Director always has a short list in his back pocket, and would immediately reach out to some of those people when an opening appears. In this case, I would guess that he has both Thiesse and Jewett on his list. But they do have to follow protocol for the vetting/screening and hiring process.

Speaking to Mankato’s struggles 6 years ago… I do know they had a couple very highly ranked recruits from our high school, both of whom could have played mid-level D1 basketball. However, one of them changed her mind after arriving on campus during the summer, and instead went to D3 Gustavus (academic reasons), and the other left after one year to go to a D2 in Wisconsin.

I agree. I really liked Kayla, because of how she had worked with and developed my daughter in the past. I know she has what it takes, but for whatever reason the fit was not right at this time, maybe with these players, who knows. I wish her great success at Green Bay. That being said, I really like what Mike Jewett brought to the program as well, and how he relates to and works with the players. I think he’s a strong but quiet leader, with good in-game strategy. However, I also think that Emily Theiss would be a home run hire. I hope they go forward with one of these two, or both, because that would be very exciting to watch.

If it’s a new player for a future year, as in a high school junior or lower, she cannot comment. NCAA regulations state that schools are not allowed to officially say anything until the player signs their NLI during their senior year.

Two things. One, they just tweeted out that Ava Cossette signed her NLI, so it could be that. Although that happened this morning, and the tweet was yesterday….. Two, when is Coach Kayla due?

A couple things... First, being recruited by one set of coaches, and having a relationship with them, especially as a 17- or 18-year-old going far from home, is a big thing. Arriving on campus to a completely different set of coaches, whom you have not talked to at all, can really affect you. Sometimes players can work through this, sometimes they cannot. It depends on both the coaches and the players, a combination of the two.
Second, it is a two-way street. In most cases, players will get out of a program some multiple of what they put in. There are exceptions, as in my daughter’s first year, at New Mexico. No amount of “putting in” was going to give her anything back from that coaching staff. In that case, it is better to cut your ties and move on. Hannah was fortunate to come to South Dakota, where coaches, especially Kayla, worked with her during her redshirt year to develop areas that she needed work on. She was also fortunate that she had a redshirt year to do this, where she wasn’t being criticized during games or on a message board.
Third, these are young ladies, many of whom have not been away from home. They do have people talking to them, advising them, and sometimes they have to stand up for themselves, and do what they think is best for themselves. Sometimes that means going home. Sometimes it doesn’t. But, the best thing that we can offer is to support these young ladies, who played their hearts out for our team, be it for one year or five years. Period.
Fourth, you may think you do, but you do not have any idea what these young ladies go through in the name of sport. The toll that it takes on their bodies, on their minds, on their personal relationships. They really do give it all, making many personal sacrifices, and many of them come out with lifelong aches and pains, all in the name of playing college basketball. We are not to question their decisions, their choices, for their lives. We just need to support them.

If she has four years of eligibility left, I would guess it’s also about the injuries, and getting a coach to trust her enough to play her after so much missed time.

The Gophers were not able to host this week because The Barn was booked for a high school robotics event. They knew that going in, so they got as many games as they could at home.

Looking at Madison‘s Twitter, it looks like you’re getting a very good player. She was on the All Iowa Attack AAU team that beat Cal Stars to win the Championship at Boo Williams two years ago. That alone says a lot. She’s also a top ranked shotputter in the state of Iowa, which takes strength and discipline. She has a lot of mentions from 5 State Hoops, PGHIowa, and others, but it looks like she did not post any offers, as some girls do not. I’m guessing the decision to go to Kearney was a personal one - I know of a couple players that turned down mid major offers to play D2 closer to home for various reasons. Time will tell, but I see good things in her future.

I know it’s been a while, but when Hannah was playing for New Mexico, the Mountain West Network was a free download.

Well, I tried to use my twitter sleuthing tools... and came up with a long list of potential recruits. No smoking gun. I think it's great that so many recruits, parents of recruits, and coaches of recruits are all liking Coach K and Gabby's tweets.... but it makes it really hard to narrow down. Look at the transfer portal list that is shown on next hoops. www.thenexthoops.com/features/2023-24-transfer-portal-tracker-ncaa-womens-basketball/They have it by Conference, which is helpful when you’re probably looking for a mid major or lower player trying to move up.

If you picked up a commitment last night after the game, that recruit was very likely at the game. Recruits generally sit a few rows behind the bench. Rewatch the game on Midco, and look for shots of the bench to see if you can spot anybody. In old gameson the Video Watch page, it’s very easy to pick out some of the incoming players who were recruits at that time.

Biggest under-performers is no surprise: Minnesota and Purdue. Big Ten fan-bases not excited to be in a 3rd-tier tournament. Wisconsin didn't even host, playing at Southern Indiana.

Minnesota would have had a much bigger crowd last night, especially to see the return of Mara Braun, but we got hit with a very nasty blizzard for the past two days. Roads were a combination of slush and black ice, very hazardous. If we hadn’t already been downtown for something else, we would not have gone to the game either. I think it kept a lot of fans at home

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Brooke Jensen committed to Augie?
