Dear Tom Douple, Please consider opening Summit League tournament play on a Friday night in 2015 and going forward in the future. You could then continue that excitement through Saturday and Sunday and conclude on Monday night to maximize viewership nationwide. I strongly question the wisdom in having a game many people would like to see set for noon tomorrow, a Monday. Sorry, I'd love to be there, but I have this little thing called a job. I'd like to keep that job. I'd also like to support the Lady Coyotes. Don't worry. You'll do just fine on attendance tomorrow without me on account of the game being a USD v. SDSU matchup, but let's use our heads and maximize the 12,000 seat Events Center going forward and sell tourney passes for times that work for fans who aren't carrying an AARP card in their wallets or are waiting for the ground to thaw out. There were around a dozen folks nearby in my section tonight who agreed with me on this account, most from SDSU and USD. I have to think it's a popular idea with many others fans, irrespective of institution. Please give it some thought. A lot of thought.

Really is backwards to have any games at all at noon on a Monday, then the championship at one on Tuesday. The only people I see this working well for are the students on spring break, and the unemployed.
The Summit isn't even catering to some schedule ESPN has demanded either, the championship game isn't going to be broadcast on any of the ESPN stations like has been done in the past several years. I can't understand at all why they selected the dates they did. Also makes it harder for any visiting fans to attend when you nonsensically put it in the beginning of the week.

It's about TV money and exposure. The Summit needs the game on ESPN.

Im using a couple days and watching all the games. I want it to stay in SF. If you start on Friday and finish on Monday, you still have 2 weekdays, so whats the difference. And of course, ESPN pretty much tells us when to have our tourney. Its been a success in SF and its not going to work for everyone. But i will always do what i can to make it work for me.

The difference, and my point, would be having the weekday games in the evening and today's games played on a Sunday to maximize attendance. The championship weekday games should always be in the evening. If it has to be men on Monday night and women on Tuesday night so be it. Sioux Falls, the conference, the sponsors, the fans, and the student athletes all benefit that much more from increased exposure and a longer tournament. If the Summit wants to put their best foot forward, they need the new events center rocking and full of fans. Next year, if we have 6-7,000 empty seats then the Summit continues to look like a low level mid-major and perception continues to be its reality despite improvements in rankings and RPI this year. Your question at the beginning of your post also illustrates my point, folks shouldn't have to burn vacation time to attend these games.

Yotefan: If your going to extend the tournament to more than 4 days, now youre really going to make it tough for people who dont live within a couple hours of Sf to come for the whole tourney. I took vacation, because i wanted to go watch all the games. I live within an hour of Sf so its easy for me. But what about fans from Omaha, Fargo or any of the other schools, or USD and SDSU fans that might live 3 or 4 hrs away. You now have a 5 or 6 day tourney. Thats a lot of gas or a lot of motel expense, food expense, if you want to see all the games. And for this tourney to be successful in SF, the USD and SDSU fans have to make it successful by going to all the games, not just the ones your team is playing in. I read somewhere that the lower bowl in the new arena would hold 7000, i think it was about that. If you can get that filled it wont look empty. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

75: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and championships on Monday is still 4 days. The 5th day, Tuesday scenario for the women I discussed as a less desirable option would acknowledge the importance of the ESPN component and could actually result in a higher viewership nationwide if the broadcast wasn't during the work day. Pretty sure fans will happily stick around and pay for an extra night at the hotel, meals, etc...if it means they have a chance to see their team make the dance. You got your 7,000 figure from the same Argus article as me and I'd rather have 12,000 seats filled than settling for a full lower bowl....alllll going back to my original point.

Also its we want the championship games on espn then we will have to play them when espn wants us to play them sdyotefan75 is right. As far as concerns about attendance: is there a reason USD's crowd size next year will not be about the same as SDSU's? If that happens, we're close to filling the new Sanford Premier Center. I think the Yote's women's success has to catch on with the fans and it'll show next year. Get a new men's coach who captures the attention of the 'Yote fans and more tickets will be sold.
