Craig would be an absolute home run hire. Craig has been VERY integral in recruiting to Nebraska. Both of their 2014 recruits were Smith. He was also responsible for getting Terran Pettaway, the team's top scorer. He recruited him at CSU out of HS and then again from TTech to Nebraska. He can do it all - total package.

I'll admit, I was pulling for miller since this thread started. All in for Smith at this point!

If anyone knows what new facilities can do for a program, it's Craig Smith. Our proposed arena has to be a huge plus in his mind. Oh man I'll be so stoked if we get him up here. Herbster needs to do anything he can within the realm of possibility to get Smith.
If Ryan Miller was turned down and we are looking for someone with head coaching experience, that would take TJ Otzelberger out of the talk to. If we are weeding candidates out like this, I do hope that means we have either more than Smith and Billeter as candidates, or we are ready to give a contract to someone (perhaps someone who needs to coach against Baylor tomorrow).

I realize this is another story about Tim Miles, but if even half of this has rubbed off on Smith, it would be huge: dataomaha.com/media/sports/huskers/basketball/tim-miles/ For what it is worth, Smith is very active in all of the promotional activities that Miles does. He is a considerably more visible participant than either of Nebraska's other assistant coaches, although Harriman is also very solid.

I rate Smith as an 8 or 9 out of 10 for the hire. I rate Billiter a 3 or 4 out of 10. Please let this be Smith or someone we haven't been honing in on our radar. There should be about 20 other candidates that would be more desirable than TB. I am worried that he would talk his way into the job more than his actual resume. Billiter seems to be very well spoken. How about a new name, Mike Leaf from Winona State. He proved to be the best in the country for awhile and still good after that. I haven't checked lately if he is still at Winona but if we are gonna go D2 lets go Leaf or Marganthaler.

Sorry but b illiter is not even close to craig smith. How do you know this? I agree that if it isn't Smith or the guy from ISU (or some equivalent) we have a problem. If it is TT or the guy from Drake we would have been just as well off with James staying on as coach.

Lots of openings. In a way, that's a more difficult climate for picking a coach. Cut the Herbster some slack.

Sorry but b illiter is not even close to craig smith. That's not Herbsters job to call all applicants that didn't get it. It's no different than a large companies HR department calling and giving good or bad news. You don't know how people interviewed or all the factors that are going into the decision. You are hearing one factor: HC experience but not other factors. By the way if you know me you would know I am a Miller fan. Maybe David just didn't have a good connection with Ryan or maybe they liked the way others answered interview questions more. With Ryan not in the running I just became a huge Craig Smith fan.

Has there ever been an official list compiled with all these candidates or is this just pure speculation.

I haven't checked lately if he is still at Winona but if we are gonna go D2 lets go Leaf or Marganthaler. Man, you guys went from not thinking Billeter is the right man for the job to "f'n puking" if he gets hired. To quote Ron Burgandy, that really escalated quickly. From what it sounds like on here and what I've been reading online, I wouldn't be shocked if Smith gets hired, and it's pretty clear he'll be successful if he is hired. Knowing that's the case, reading these last couple of posts (including the one I'm quoting) has made me wonder: out of curiosity, why do you think there haven't been 20 other more desirable candidates knocking down Herbster's door or flooding his inbox? The open position has been a front page link on ESPN's men's basketball page, is undoubtedly national news in the coaching ranks, has been tweeted about by ESPN analysts with 97,000 Twitter followers, etc. If this is such an incredibly desirable job opportunity (as many of the fans on here clearly think it is), shouldn't those coaches you "haven't been honing in on your radar" be desperate to get to Vermillion for an interview? I know most/all of you will take this post as me trying to pick a fight or something, but I'm really not. As I've said before, I'll be glad if Coach Billeter stays at Augie. It's just been interesting to read this recent flood of posts more or less implying that every college basketball coach in the country should want this job. If that's the case, how are the most recently rumored candidates still only Craig Smith, TJ Otzelberger, Tom Billeter and Jeff Rutter? It's not like Herbster forgot to post the job on Monster.com and nobody knows about it yet.

Sorry Augiefan, have never been on board for your guy. Not interested in anything from Augie. From a PR perspective, hiring the Augie coach would be a major PR blow. Did he win a D2 title last year? Last 2years? No. USD hiring an Augie retread would be very bad.
