The Coyote Men are taking part in the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the Coyotes will take on host Sacramento State at 5:30PM Central. The Hornets are 4-0 this year including a win at Arizona State. Last year they were 21-12 and 13-5 in the Big Sky. They made it to the second round of the CIT tourney last season. I don't think the Big Sky is as good as the Summit so on paper the Hornets are probably a slight favorite but on their home court on Thanksgiving weekend gives them even more of an advantage. The Coyotes will need to be at their very best or close to it to come out of this one with a win. No playing good for one half and taking off the other half or the Yotes will come away from this one with nothing but Hornet stings. A win is possible but it's gonna take the core players playing good for most of the game.
This is not like the women's tourney as the Coyotes are already scheduled to play Eastern Washington at 4:30 PM Sunday. Eastern Washington is 2-2 with no real impressive wins. The Eagles were 26-8 last year and 14-4 in the Big Sky. They went to the NCAA tourney last year. The Yotes are playing the best of the Big Sky. This is gonna be a tough weekend and if the Yotes can squeek out a 1-1 record I think they would have to take that. If things don't click and the Yotes don't pull off an upset it could be a pretty ugly record awaiting them at 2-5.
Overall this is a fairly difficult non conference schedule this year. After this weekend they have the following.
at Minnesota vs UMKC vs CSU Bakersfield at Milwaukee at Illinois at UNLV vs Florida Gulf Coast - Pentagon

Sacramento State fell just short of winning the Big Sky last year and are 4-0 with a win over Arizona State to start this season. Their Hornet Nest is one of the weirdest venues in D1 as it only holds about 1,000 people. I saw quite the writeup last year detailing how they planned to get the capacity to over 3,000 in a week's time if they had won the Big Sky last year, but lost their final two games and shelved the idea. They lost just one home game last year and this place is quite the homecourt advantage. JVG has said in the pregame that this is a rare non-sellout for Sacramento State, probably due to the holiday. This will be a tough game to win.
Go Yotes!

Wouldn't want to expand that capacity beyond 1,000 LOL.
Sac State hitting from outside and leads it 17-12. Burnett had a nice follow slam. Full screen looks really good with the big sky video.

29-27 Hornets. Good game so far. The Coyotes need to guard their 3 point shooters a little better. There is no reasons to believe that the Coyotes can't win this one by what has happened so far.

The Coyotes just hit 3 treys in about a minute. They went from down 8 to up 1 just like that. 30 seconds left in the half.

Sac State scored just before half and it is 49-48 H-Men at the half. The Coyotes did well offensively but were consistently beaten from the 3 point arc and from the paint. Gotta shore up that end of the court. Either team could pull out this one.

Coach Smith said he was hoping to have Sacramento State in the 60s for a final. Throw that out the window.

Full screen looks really good with the big sky video. You'd be surprised how clear the picture is IN PERSON at the Dome

Dan Jech and the Yotes are having a huge game. This team seems to be coming along in finding their identity much earlier than I anticipated.

The Yotes were great tonight. They would never let Sac State pull very far ahead of them and once they took the lead they never looked back. I was so impressed with all the players. Jech really stood out tonight to me. He has a very high basketball IQ. The defense does need to tighten up but to go out to California and take one of the better Big Sky teams down is nice. The Summit is definitely the better conference between the two.
96-90 was the final. Awsome job Yotes and what a good day for Coyote basketball.
