Wow. I was reading the SDSU thread in the MBB forum, and one poster mentioned that "we used to draw more than 5k for the rivalry game with State back in the DII days" and I was intrigued, so I looked it up. I couldn't find old box scores, but the NCAA publishes year-end attendance figures. Turns out, he was right. At least about our attendance having been higher in the DII days. I didn't realize that many of the NCC teams used to draw an average of 3,000-5,000 per game, ranking several teams, including USD, in the top-5 for attendance each year. For Men's basketball, at least. I guess I agree with Mick more now. Even though we are a low-population state, there's no reason why we don't have the potential to fill that place up. I guess the stretch of non-competitiveness when we went D-1 really set us back, fan-wise. This game tomorrow and the tournament could be a real catalyst. Speaking of the rabbits forum, how did the fascinating story of Coach Otz's twitter account finish up?

I can't bring myself to look at the Rabbits board...

I also wasn't around for those days and only learned of the higher attendance when out of curiosity I checked our record crowds in the media guide. I think there were crowds over 9k at the top. Being doubleheaders helps, but I can't even fathom that level of interest existing here.

One loss for each team. VB to Iowa State, both basketball teams to SL opponents who are currently tied for 1st (naturally with USD).

The SCSC record is super impressive!! Have a few state friends that were just "sure" that once the Yotes left the Dome they'd lose their home court advantage because the "cavernous Dome" was a huge disadvantage to visiting basketball teams. I said let's just wait and see. As normal the "state experts" were wrong!! LOL

There's just as much open space behind the baskets at the Premier Center. Only ever heard the complaint from those up north...

Now that the home games are done for this season, here are the home attendance averages for both men and women since we joined the Summit League (excluding any hosted postseason tournament games)
---------MEN---WOMEN 2012---1454---1293 2013---1701---1094 2014---1796---1398 2015---1745---1600 2016---1874---1720 2017--2192--1816
There may not be an attendance "spike" with the SCSC, but both programs have seen steady improvement in attendance, mirroring success on the court. I think the SCSC is the perfect facility for this period of re-growth and re-establishment of NCC rivalries.
*edit - FWIW, the SDSU men's team had a home average attendance of 2195 this year....and the women had 1786..... rain or shine, I guess....

I think that those are promising numbers for our first year in the SCSC. Does that 2016 figure include the NIT?
The key now is to continue the promising growth. Up those numbers 2-300 per year and we will have a fantastic atmosphere every night very soon.

Does that 2016 figure include the NIT? Nope. With the record-setting WNIT games added, the average was 2,333 in 2015-2016. And that is the "official" NCAA home attendance for USD women for that year. I just think adding postseason games gives a less consistent point of comparison.

So it seems the SCSC has provided both a spark for USD athletics AND increased attendance (I hope Mick is reading). If the men can replicate that increase next year we will be over 2500. That would be fantastic to see. Continue building on the great atmosphere we have found in the SCSC.
