Any news regarding which assistants are heading to Nebraska? I was just at the Lunch with U in Sioux Falls and Herbster said that Amy is taking the staff with her. He also said that Amy contacted all of the recruits to tell them of her decision, David Williams followed-up with each of the recruits to discuss the coaching search and then Herbster contacted each of the recruits parents to discuss the next steps. At this time, all current players are returning and all recruits remain committed but that could always change after the new coach is hired. Herbster thought they would be able to make an announcement on a new coach in the week and half or so.

So does anyone have any names of folks being interviewed/looked at yet? Yea,they could have thrown us a bone to chew on by now (no pun intended,I use this figure of speech a lot)....like how many people have shown interest so far ,maybe even a mention of some of the most notable ones....the fans are always thirsty for more information,it'd be wise to keep 'em happy and content ......besides,not hearing anything could be taken negatively, you know, that there's not a lot of interest,if the silence goes on for a prolonged time. They could lay these fears or concerns aside by simply providing a tad bit more information as to how well the process is proceeding. As a fan, I understand your wanting the information, but really, the tighter the lid on the process the better. Neither candidates nor the schools want everyone to know who is interested and who is spurned. Someone in the process will end up looking bad, or being offended. Hell, look at the Ryan Miller situation with the Jacks. Defiantly some hard feelings. JT was just doing his job as a nosy journalist, but Mike M reacted badly and publicly. Not a good look.

Herbster thought they would be able to make an announcement on a new coach in the week and half or so. This was spot on with what I heard there. In addition, Herbster said they are not using a search firm this time. They have been flooded with calls and both he and Williams are going to be working hard to narrow a huge pool of names into a small group of candidates that they will interview and/or conduct further due diligence on. Herbster said they will look for a person that follows the mold of Chad Lavin, Ryun Williams and Amy Williams. They will use the same criteria they have used in hiring Amy, Craig and Bob. These guys know what they are doing. They are trying to act in a timely fashion and, by all accounts, they are doing it the right way.

No kidding. The SDSU board even had a fool on there claiming that the research the he and other message board members were doing on the candidates was considered due diligence and this person believed that, because he/she was a tax payer, he/she was entitled to a say in the hire. The delusion there was off the charts.

It's a tough call with experience, AJ was a grad assistant with the Jacks men's program, became an assistant with the women's and when Coach Neiber had some health issues during the season he was named interim head coach and then later got the head gig. I know that they were DII at that time but it was still a risky hire, just as Coach Williams 2.0 was risky with her lack of experience, but with great risk comes great reward and the rest is/was history.

I don't think the fans and alumni should be totally discounted when it comes to making the decision either. They are ultimately the ones that pay the bills and go to the games so I thinking polling the fans or gaining their opinion in some way isn't such a bad idea. Most fans will jump on the fastest moving bandwagon but their opinion should carry a little weight.

We have to trust DH to make the right choice for USD. He hasn't failed us yet...

I am not saying that the fans should be making the final decision or anything but an AD is skating on mighty thin ice if he doesn't feel the pulse of the fan base. Sure he can stick out his neck for "his guy" but if that candidate ends up failing the AD may very well take the fall.

AD is going to take the fall for coaching hire failures anyway, might as well go out with "his guy" as opposed to somebody they were pressured into hiring. If the hire fails it is the AD that gets fired, not the fans, we just get to shrug our shoulders and move on our merry way.

So other than the name of Emilee Thiesse being thrown around, there are a few other area Division II coaches that have pretty good track records:
Dave Krauth - Augustana Travis Traphagen, Sioux Falls Chris Kielsmeier, Wayne State
All three have taken teams pretty deep into the D2 NCAA Tournament. Kielsmeier has a Division III national championship to his credit as well. Wouldn't be surprised if one (or all three) haven't thrown their names into the hat.

Thiesse's team is currently trending in the wrong direction. Krauth is way too run of the mill. He has been solid in D2 but really not much of anything else and if USD is to go the D2 route than we need excellence, not just pretty good. Traphagen I don't know as much about but USF doesn't have a great history to my recollection and their national tourney appearance this year is not a large enough sample size. Kielsmeier has not done enough with Wayne State either. I have no problem with going down to D2 or whatever just expect better than these candidates.

You try to get your fans involved in this process and you'll be lucky to have a coach by Christmas.
