Are we ever not going to see new faces year on year? Doesn't seem like there is a whole lot of chance for any player to grow.

During the Boot's era it was especially true as the bench got shortened quite a bit so experienced players were thinner than perhaps they should have been. So far under Smith the player defections are hurting quite a bit. Ideally the program will get to the point where the players are distributed evenly across all classes where the norm is to have 3 players gone every year with most of the team back in most years. If the bench goes 9 or 10 deep the losses won't seem as severe. Just look at the Women. they lost so much with the senior class but next season will seem like anything but a bare cupboard.

There's been about one notable departure and they were facing decreased playing time. The core of the team and entire coaching staff has remained, please leave that crap out of here and let this thread be about upcoming games.

Most schools have turnover each year. There is nothing abnormal going on in Vermillion except panic posts for no reason.

I don't think illiinfans or Coyote Fan have a clue what they are talking about. This is exactly the team we knew would be here two years ago, except that we got lucky in the timing of Flack's injury and he will be part of the team this year. 2016-17 was always going to be about Jech, Hagedorn, Dickerson, Mooney and Hurst. We are supremely lucky to be able to compliment them with Flack, Sparks, Simpson, Armstrong, and Peterson. Further, we did well to land two JUCO kids that will contribute immediately in Burch-Manning and Doss. I know for a fact that the coaches are VERY excited about Burch-Manning and what he can bring to the table. For those that actually paid attention, there was a suspician that DJ wouldn't even be on the team last year, then he got his act together. He left after this season...for a D-2 school. Shy was a cancer to the team and had family concerns. I don't think it should be a shock to anybody that he left. Where did he end up? D-2. If these were "USD Problems" or "Coach Smith Problems" then why aren't these supremely talented kids getting offers from all over to transfer to mid-majors or P5 schools? Because they have baggage or aren't talented enough. Finally, we have some really intriguing walk-ons - Power has been here for a while now, plus we add sharp shooters in Stensgard and Delimont. We have one open scholarship and that is being left open to compliment the ONE graduating senior we have next year in Flack. So, we should only have two "new faces" next season, but my guess is there will be another transfer. That is the name of the game in college basketball. There were something like 700 D-1 basketball transfers last year. 700! The previous year there were 850!!! This isn't D-2 basketball anymore boys and girls. Act like it. Coyote Fan do you recall what the bench went last season regularly? Shy, Norris, Burnette, Casey, Flack, Hagedorn, Jech, Davis, Robertson, Sparks, Power and even Mayot. On the low end, that is 9 deep - really it was regularly 10 or 11. This year it will be as follows: G: Dickerson, Simpson, G: Mooney, Doss, Peterson G: Hurst, Armstrong, Power F: Flack, Hagedorn, Manning F: Jech, Sparks RS: Delimont and Stensgard That is a talent pool of likely 13. They could also choose to RS any of Simpson (not likely), Peterson and/or Armstrong. That still leaves 10-11 playing - not just on the bench, but in the rotation. In my personal opinion, and I loved the guys like Casey, Robertson and Burnette, but this will be the first time the team that walks out onto the court actually looks like a D-1 team.

Just saying, I know every program misses on players but maybe we need to get better at who we bring in.

Fair, but in the case of DJ, he was a player brought in when Smith was hired. The guy illiinfans is upset about still, Thoseby, was a Boots guy, Borchers was a walk on, Zach Dickerson was a walk on. Shy isn't as easy, but he was a late signee that had the talent, just a bad attitude.

Gotta be the season opener. Would consider the trip to Des Moines but think I'll pass and go to our football game in Brookings the following day.

Does anyone know when the New Mexico game is? Are you referring to the football game? That's at 8 (CST) on 9/1. We are not playing New Mexico in basketball this year.
