The Falcons lost their opener 78-70 at Oakland. That doesn't seem like a horrible loss as Oakland would appear to be a good team. In the Mid American Conference last year they were 5-13 and were 16-18 overall. They were actually kind of similar to the Coyotes last year. They started 12-5 but didn't have an impressive resume of wins. They did beat Florida Gulf Coast on the road. After that they finished going 4-13 to finish out their year. Obviously similar to the Coyotes they finished the year poorly.
This seems like a winnable game for the Yotes. They might be about as good as Drake but since this one is in the SCSC I fully expect the Coyotes to come out on top. The Coyotes are a team that are energy driven and they should have that on Sunday. I will go with 85-71 Coyotes.

They also played without their starting PG and SG due to suspension. Those guys will be back tomorrow.

Congratulations on opening the new gym with a pair of wins. Was it a sellout?

Where the hell was everyone? I had to sit behind so many rows of empty seats that were already spoken for when I went to go pick out my own. There were definitely more people in attendance for the first volleyball game than this one.
Really liked what I saw in Hurst, Mooney, and Burch-Manning. Our true freshmen Peterson and Simpson looked good, Simpson made the winning FTs down the stretch. Flack will be a monster whenever he is on the court - foul trouble still hampering him. I'm guessing Hagendoorn is hurt? Has not played in either game so far.
2-0 for the first time at the D1 level.

Attendance in the box score said 3017. Certainly didn't feel half full to me.

The crowd didn't seem that big but I can tell you that the new arena is way better for crowd noise than in the dome. It got loud in there down the stretch.

Guessing the low student attendance can be attributed to the holiday weekend (no classes friday). Not sure what the excuse for others was, though. Didn't really feel like an opening game to me but I guess they've been playing volleyball in there for 3 months so the wow-factor might've worn off a bit.

I am purposely not looking at any posts in this thread before I post so I don't get swayed one way or another. I will bet that I am not as impressed with the performance today as most. The Coyotes showed very little energy for the first 15:00 in the first half and it honestly had me shaking my head because after 15:00 I was like "this is exactly like last year". I also didn't really see a night and day difference in talent. If there is more talent it is not by the significant difference that many think. I guess the thing I noticed in that talent department was the nice driving two handed jam by Hurst. That was a sweet play.
The first half involved way too much playground style offensive basketball. I don't really understand often what the team is trying to accomplish on that end of the floor. Way too much isolation and not enough ball movement. When the Coyotes did take over the game at the end of the first half and beginning of the second they let Bowling Green right back in the game. The SCSC kind of willed the Coyotes to win in the end but Bowling Green is probably a lower tier Summit team at best and if the Coyotes want to be a serious contender they need to change the way they play basketball. They need to bring their effort way more often then they do and need to get better running their offense and staying away from iso ball. They need to take a page out of the Women's book because they can produce a how to video of how to play intense basketball and play it for almost the whole game. Maybe I just got too spoiled by the women and in comparison it made the men's effort pale in comparison. Regardless the Coyotes need to become more consistent with their energy level if they are to be a serious contender. Last year they never got that riddle solved and this year more of the same.
Burch-Manning ended up with a double double and I didn't really even notice that he had that kind of a game. It looks like Mooney is going to end up being an end of game shot taker. What is also interesting is that down the stretch Smith trusted Triston Simpson to be on the court in crunch time. If I remember the others out there in crunch time were Flack, Hurst, Mooney and Burch-Manning.
The Coyotes need to work on two big things. They need a more consistent energy and need to be a more cohesive unit and play more team ball. A good team chemistry can make up for a slight disadvantage in talent. Not that the Coyote's aren't talented but they need to gel. I wouldn't give too big of a pass on the team being new together because the Women are new to each other and work awesome out there together. A win is a win is a win and it seemed like Smith and Van Gohr were both pretty giddy after the game but I didn't quite share their giddiness. I give the performance tonight a C-.

Attendance in the box score said 3017. Certainly didn't feel half full to me. I knew that USD would over report the attendance. There were 1500 max. Possible as low as 1,000. That was a very disappointing turnout for Coyote Fans. They always say, "build it and they will come". I guess that doesn't apply to Coyote fans. Where is the pride and what is it going to take to motivate the fan base. I also wonder where everyone was and some of those seats were sold that didn't have butts in them. Even the Corr Trust Club area was maybe a third full. I think they built that area too big. It is going to end up half full at best every game except for the Jackrabbit game and other more deserving fans that actually show up are sitting in less desirable areas. I was thinking during the game. If you would have built this same arena in Brooking replaced the red seats with blue and had a jack rabbit logo in the middle of it I guarantee you that the Jacks fans would have at least had an attendance number of 4K minimum. That is with their teams playing the same opponents on same date and time.

Well we did not watch the same game then, CF.
You need to let go of last year, man. This is a good basketball team. Keep in mind that the four games in Spain and the exhibition won't all of a sudden make this team gel the way you need it to gel. As Coach Smith said in his postgame interview, there will be some growing pains, and you'll have to live with that.
I saw nothing majorly wrong in this game. I felt the team was certainly energized, even despite the "3,000" fans in attendance. The rebounding was better than last year as well.
Consistency will come. Don't use the small sample size as a means of judging this team. Let's look at all of the first month's games, collectively, before we start to decide just how good this team is.
If you did not see an improvement in talent from last year, then I have no idea what you are looking for. Four guys in double figures and Mooney with nine points shows a balanced attack overall which is what you want in your offense. We're not Duke/Kansas/Wisconsin/Kentucky...we're a low mid-major team. Be happy with the pair of wins we got here.
I give the performance a B+.

I agree with you on one thing. We do need to give this team some time to gel. I will not judge this team completely until they get to the Summit League but I will still comment on the progress. I just didn't see very good cohesion and too much individual play. I guess we will have to disagree on the energy thing. They showed a nice effort for about a 10 minute span just in and out of halftime. They also did so for about the last 5 minutes of the game. I thought the other 25 minutes wasn't the best but like I said I am not going to look at this performance as good as others will.
If people expect a top 4 Summit finish it is going to involve an improvement in a lot of areas. The Yotes will be playing a tourney in Florida where they will have 3 games in 3 days starting November 21st. I believe they will be playing all mid majors so that will continue the measuring process.
