Would be awesome if the Summit's need for a baseball team is the impetus that brings baseball back to USD.

Out of some of the expansion targets mentioned before:
UMKC, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Idaho State, E Wash, Green Bay do not have varsity baseball.
Grand Canyon, NMSU, Northern Colorado all play baseball in the WAC Milwaukee plays in the Horizon. St Cloud, Mankato, Duluth, Augie all play baseball in the Northern Sun.
We could get by without baseball if the Summit decided to sponsor another men's sport, though. Like football.

There are quite a few MVC fans that would have rather had Murray State. The Valley continues to go in a direction opposite the views of the Dakota 4. Another private school added and one that will not try to push a football agenda. Last I knew they had non scholarship football but don't know if that is still true. The more the Valley all sports conference leans towards getting in basketball schools the more the MVFC becomes a less disirable long term home because the Valley football members will get less and less clout.
As far as IPFW as a possibility for the Horizon if they go IUPUI will try to get out of the Summit as well. What will end up happening is that the Summit with their tail between their legs will invite UMKC and Chicago State further weakening the league. I hope if that is the case that NDSU will say enough is enough and make a big push to exit the Summit and lead the way for the Dakota 4 to take an alternative route.

I don't think our administration considers baseball even if there weren't Title IX implications.

Baseball could be run on a bare bones budget and be there just to keep that Summit autobid intact. As far as Title 9 goes, could baseball be run as a non-scholarship sport? If not would need to bump up the scholarships to some women's sports to offset, or add something inexpensive. I would vote for women's lacrosse.
No matter what happens that Summit autobid has to be secure. If the choice is starting up baseball or be left in a D1 conference without access to the Big Dance, we start baseball.

I wonder how Omaha will be treated at the next Summit League meeting...

UND only recently dropped baseball. their reasoning was budget cuts at the state level. I'm sure the fact that the Big Sky doesn't sponsor baseball might have been a factor as well.

One of two things needs to happen in the future. Big North Conference - all sports USD SDSU NDSU UND Montana Montana State Idaho Idaho State Eastern Washington Denver (non-football) Great Midwest Conference - all sports USD SDSU NDSU UND UNI WIU SIU ISUr ISUb MSU Play a 9 game football schedule with 1 FBS (away) and 1 FCS OOC (home and home, alternating with 5/4 conference home game schedule). Either one of these conferences would be great. All teams in the conference would benefit as they are all regional public universities (except Denver) so they all have similar goals and share similar profiles. Either one of these conferences would be dominate at the FCS level and well prepared to move to whatever the second level of football becomes. They would also end up being a top level, multi-bid mid-major basketball conference. It makes so much sense it will probably never happen.

I miss having a baseball team as well, but due to T-IX and an increased budget I don't see it happening.

I don't see it happening either unless something forces it to happen out of necessity. In a vacuum, no, USD is not restarting baseball. If it was necessary to save the Summit from losing its autobid status, I could see it happening under those conditions.

Summit should strike the Horizon first and offer 2 of the 3, UW-GB, UW-M, or UI-C and bring our number to 12 with UND coming in. Those schools can also bridge the gap to Indiana and provide more of an East/West balance to the conference.
Like the article stated, the Summit has surpassed the Horizon on the pecking order of mid-majors. Offers go for schools to move up, not down.
Could also ask MVFC mate YSU to join the Summit, although I have a feeling they would rather go east than west if they were to move at all.
