I hope the coaches are at central lyon and western Christian championship game tomorrow. Definitely some players on both teams.

Well, I just updated the matrix on the first post with graduations and players in the transfer portal. If any players end up coming back, I can update that (just greyed out on the spreadsheet). But for now it looks like we have 8 scholarship players returning, so 5 open scholarships. Hopefully we will see our coaches scoring some missing pieces from the portal and on the recruiting trail. Right now Paul Bruns is the senior player on the team, and it feels like he just got here....

Mere speculation, but I'm guessing both Burchill and Branch will be put on scholarship which would take us up to ten. That would allow for three portal possibilities to transfer in. I would also guess that we will add from the portal. Regardless, we'll be very young and inexperienced next year, but if I remember correctly Coach Smith's worst season was his second before he got everything put in place

Just curious, doesn't any athlete attend college for the academics anymore? I transferred from an NAIA school where I was actually all-conference hon. mention as a 17 yr. old freshman TO USD. I didn't consider playing football here, but came because of the academics. What a unique concept. You know, to maybe get a better job after graduation. One of the smartest things that I ever did. I truly feel like I'm a vanishing breed looking at today's athletes. This transfer portal thing is a true can of worms.

Unless you're going to school for something really specialized, you can find a degree just about anywhere to get you into the field you want to work in. The reality is, athletes want to play, they want to win, and they want the nicest stuff to do it in (gear, facilities, etc). That's the reason we consistently lose every highly recruited SD kid to state in MBB and FB. They don't all want to be farmers, but state has a bigger fan base and are perennially in the hunt for conference championships.

I think it is a whole different animal for football and basketball compared to other sports. Also depends on the kid a bit. My son is a Division I track & field athlete (not at USD). Track and field scholarships are usually not full rides and are pretty limited. When he was looking at schools the opportunity to run track and how well he liked the coaches, etc was certainly part of it. But he was more focused on what he wanted in terms of academic programs. In the end he chose a school that offered what he wanted in terms of field of study. Fortunately it was also one of the schools that showed the most interest in him as an athlete. And he felt comfortable there. But for some athletes, academics are not a big part of the equation.

Updated with Safieddine, and cleaned up the 2023 class. That puts us at 13 scholarships going into the summer before the 2023-24 season (and a bunch of walk-ons!). I think we are done with the transfer portal - time to get the 2023 class on campus, and looking forward to the 2024 class. Lots of size upgrading from the portal this cycle!

So including walk-ons we will have five players 6-9 to 6-10, four players 6-6 to 6-8, and six players from 6-3 to 6-5. Not bad for size and length. We will have to wait and see about skill level, but I feel pretty good about where we are in year 2!

Just updated the matrix (first post) with the Porter Ihnen commit and the freshmen on campus (from green to black text). Looks like we only have one more scholarship spot for 2024, and the Jacks get one freed up with the Ihnen commitment .

Petey made the comment on YoteCast that we only had one senior that would be graduating this year. I assume that is Lahat, and that Holt still has a COVID year. With 3 players signing, we are going to have to do some scholarship gymnastics next year. It's going to be very interesting to see how this year plays out. We are SO much deeper than in years past. Coleman and Branch are redshirting. Sounds like Eberwein is as well at this point.

Looks like Kandolin is no longer with the team (walk on). So we have 16 on the roster, and are using 12 of 13 scholarships available. Then if Lahat graduates we will have 2 available for 3 incoming recruits. I mean, it wouldn't be that strange if we lost a player to the portal in the offseason, for playing time or whatever reason. Turnover is almost a given these days, so may as well plan for it?

Maybe Burchill will be retroactively awarded with that extra scholarship by the end of the season? Like on a one-year basis, since we had the extra one this year? Not sure how that works, but Burchill has been starting.
