...It is very evident that this current staff is not interested in the needs of USD, we have players from local area that wish to return closer to home and we don't pursue them? ... What players from the "local area" wish to return closer to home and are not being pursued by USD? Is this just a common internet rant with no evidence supporting it? Keep in mind Coach Boots has had one losing season at USD...one. And you suggest he's there to just collect a paycheck?

3.2 per cent of high school seniors play basketball at some level of the NCAA. Fewer play at Div One level. Any coach focusing on SD or even the entire Great Plains for D1 basketball recruitment would not last long.

Whoever made the comment about D-I prospects in South Dakota is right on the money. Coaches like Boots and Nagy have proven to be smart enough to know when to truly pursue talent that's out there. Look at what SDSU did this season with the Carlsons, Fiegens, etc of the world, and what USD got out of Louie Krogman, etc.
SDSU nabbed Nate Wolters from across the Minn border and Dykstra from just across the Iowa border. USD had to go the transfer route, but as that program moves further along, you cant tell me Boots & his assistants wont be able to lure some of those high-quality kids. (Not a knock on anyone already in Vermillion, by any means).

Littleyote, I am sorry, but after covering the local talent the last few years, very few of them are able to play at a D-II level, let alone the D-I level. Look at the players from Mitchell, going D-II at the highest. Zach Kraning may by a D-I player, but tore his ACL. Cory Jacobsen walked on at SDSU. Zach Horstman was hooked into SDSU and that's really the best D-I player the state has had since Louie Krogman. Cody Larson may be good, but he was just pumped up by the Argus so much that it's hard to tell. Horstman had a decent freshman year. Some of the best talent in SD is usually a pretty good get for the NAIA schools in the state. I doubt Billy Donovan reads the argus leader. Or court reports

I doubt Billy Donovan reads the argus leader. Or court reports I think Billy knows what went on with Cody.

I threw a "B.S." flag on the claim the coaches are 1) not interested in the NEEDS of USD; and 2) there are players in the 'local area' that wish to return closer to home who are not being pursued by USD". Based on littleyote's remarks, he thinks 1) it is very evident Filipek would fill a USD need and 2) the USD coaches are ignoring Filipek. Still sounds to me like just another internet rant. I don't think there's any evidence the USD coaches are just "collecting a paycheck", are ignoring the needs of the team, and are not pursuing filipek. If they are not pursuing Filipek, is that because Filipek, in the view of the coaches, isn't what they're looking for or perhaps Filipek has been contacted and made it clear he wasn't interested? My point: pretty harsh comment ('just collecting a paycheck') for coaches who have established they know what they're doing.

Filipek is doing nothing for Eastern Kentucky right now. I am actually surprised they are Division I. He shot a whopping 20 percent in 13 minutes a game this year.
Yes, Willmar is four hours away so it is in the area and such, but honestly, he is only one case and if you look at the history of USD men's basketball, it has a LOT of tradition of bringing in South Dakota players to play a major role.

South Dakota's only ranked recruit for men's basketball, Zach Kraning, signed with Northern State. A knee injury really hurt his chances of playing Division I basketball. When the best prospect of the state goes Division II, shows that you have to go outside of the recruiting zone....

Mick G. said yesterday in his live chat that he though USD would continue to look for up to 2 more recruits for this year, if they can find the right guys.

Mick G. said yesterday in his live chat that he though USD would continue to look for up to 2 more recruits for this year, if they can find the right guys. That is interesting because it has seemed in the past that the right guys included players 10, 11 and 12 at the end of the bench with premium NAIA talent to boot. Lets hope every player on the roster can contribute instead only about 8 or 9 of them. Hopefully Boots stops wasting roster spots on guys that have no business being on the team.

was talking to someone who knows some of the USD players, said Tecker played AAU ball with Eric Robertson, and wasnt overly impressed then. Hopefully the kid improved his game down in Florida. We dont need any more ju-co kids who have to develop on day one; we need kids who can ball on day one.
